Everyone thinks the God of War died 743 years ago. They couldn't be more wrong. He wasn't killed; he was erased. Ronan Ash has nothing to his name. No family to claim him, no rank to protect him, and zero divine affinity a crushing, humiliating void in a world where every other student at the Imperial War Academy radiates power. To everyone else, he’s a punchline: an orphan clutching a rusted sword with nothing but an F-rank future ahead of him. Then, the System wakes up. Welcome back, Host. You have been dead for 743 years. Suddenly, Ronan is haunted by memories he doesn't recognize, hunted by enemies he’s never encountered, and guided by a System that knows infinitely more about him than it’s willing to reveal. It speaks in riddles, hiding his skills and sealing away his true potential. But buried deep within its data is a ledger containing six names: the six beings who wiped a god from history to claim the world's thrones for themselves. They are still alive. They are still worshipped. And they are still watching. To find them, Ronan must climb from the absolute bottom of a world that has already forgotten his existence. To defeat them, he will have to evolve into something even the gods feared. And to survive, he’ll have to demand an answer to the one question the System refuses to touch: Why was the God of War erased, and what was he truly becoming?

CHAPTER 1: THE ZERO-AFFINITY STUDENT

The crystal had already tested four hundred students before Ronan Ash stepped up. Not one of those tests had cracked it, not even close. And Ronan? He stood dead last in a line that stretched all the way across the Grand Examination Hall.

Over his head, the enormous ceiling vanished into shadow. Pillars streaked with veins of light climbed toward the dark, their glow pulsing with power. Banners hung between them, each one carrying the sigil of a division. Underneath those banners, the strongest seventeen-year-olds in all of Aetheria waited to see who would come out on top.

Ronan didn’t belong here. That wasn’t some pity party just the truth. Everyone else wore their family colors or gripped weapons with stories behind their names. The boy in front of Ronan carried a sword that actually seemed to sing with every step.

And Ronan? He had a beat-up academy blade and a tunic that swallowed him.

“Next.”

The examiner sounded bored out of his mind, wouldn’t you, after calling out four hundred names?

The boy ahead walked up to the Divine Crystal, this towering white pillar right in the center of everything. He pressed his hand to the stone… and it lit up.

DIVINE AFFINITY: 78%

Scattered applause, a decent showing. The examiner nodded. “Combat Division. Third tier.”

Then came the next student, a girl with streaks of silver in her hair. She barely hesitated.

The crystal blazed.

DIVINE AFFINITY: 91%

The room exploded with cheers and whistles; even the examiner looked up from his papers.

“Divine Division. First tier.”

She accepted it all with a straight face. Didn't even bother to smile. She just walked away, like she’d seen it coming.

Ronan’s hands felt frozen.

You could leave now, he told himself. Nobody’d stop you. Nobody’d even care.

But the only thing waiting for him elsewhere was nothing.

“Next.”

He stepped forward.

Nobody fell silent. No hush, no respect, just a shift in the air. Whispers, snickers, muffled laughs, especially from the front. They knew him. Ronan, the orphan with no clan, no sponsor, nothing special in his blood. F-rank applicant.

He put his palm on the crystal.

Nothing.

It was just stone, cool under his hand.

The examiner waited. So did Ronan.

Five seconds. Ten. The whispers got louder.

“Did he even touch it?”

“Maybe he’s broken.”

The examiner frowned and knocked on the crystal. Just like you’d tap a broken lamp. He looked at Ronan like he was a stain on clean clothes.

“Again.”

Ronan pressed harder, eyes squeezed shut. He didn’t try to pray; he wouldn’t even know who to pray to. He just willed something to happen, begged for a flicker, a spark, any number that wasn’t zero.

The crystal stayed dark.

The examiner sighed and pulled back.

DIVINE AFFINITY: 0%

This time, the laughter hit him like a wave. Real laughter, the kind that’s mean, sudden, almost relieved it’s not aimed at you.

Ronan left his hand there one second longer, then let go.

“F-rank," the examiner said, already moving along. "Unassigned. Next.”

He turned and walked out, eyes glued to the floor, counting his steps. Seventeen. Eighteen. Nineteen. Counting was better than thinking about how it felt.

Behind him, something finally happened.

A tiny crack traced its way up the crystal, right where his palm had been. A thin thread of light leaked out for a moment, then vanished.

Nobody noticed.

The exam went on.

That night, Ronan lay on a creaky cot in the basement east wing, cramped and cold, crammed with eight beds, one candle, and a bucket in the corner. The ceiling was stained with old water and if you stared long enough, the marks looked a little like faces.

He didn’t think about the laughter. He thought about the dreams.

They’d started three months ago, right when he turned seventeen. Every night, the same scene: a ruined battlefield, smoke, flames, warriors with armor he didn’t recognize. In the center there was always a black throne, waiting for someone.

He woke up just before reaching it. And no, he’d never breathed a word.

You could run away, the voice in his head whispered. Just disappear. Be a farmer, anything but this.

He stayed right where he was.

Somewhere beneath all the humiliation and exhaustion, something lingered a tension in the air, alive and electric, like right before a storm.

He closed his eyes and…

Darkness. Not just regular night, but real, smothering black, like the world itself flickered out.

He jerked awake.

A black screen hovered in front of him. He scrambled backwards, heart pounding against his chest. The candle was still burning. Everyone else still asleep. But the screen just hung there, perfectly still and definitely wrong.

Words appeared, pale letters crawling across the dark:

[SYSTEM INITIALIZATION COMPLETE.]

He couldn’t move.

[WELCOME BACK, HOST.]

His mouth went dry. His heart hammered. He whispered the only thing that came to him.

“…Back?”

The screen’s border pulsed, white and steady.

[YOU HAVE BEEN DEAD FOR 743 YEARS.]

It didn’t make sense. He’d never been dead, not for a second he’d lived every one of his seventeen years in an orphanage, in a basement, in a world that had laughed at him that very day.

But the screen wouldn’t budge. To it, this was just fact.

He reached out. His hand went straight through cold, heavier than ice, almost like sinking into deep water.

[QUEST AVAILABLE: SURVIVE THE FIRST NIGHT.]

[REWARD: 1 WAR ENERGY.]

[FAILURE: SYSTEM TERMINATION.]

Termination. The word settled like a stone in his gut.

[QUEST BEGINS IN 10 SECONDS.]

He grabbed his sword, the same battered thing as before. It was useless, but it was all he had.

He stood.

The candle snuffed out. The door at the top of the stairs swung open, something stepping into the black.

He couldn’t see it. The dark was complete. But he sensed it tall, thin, and wrong. It didn’t breathe. It moved like a shadow that refused to touch the ground.

The others slept on. Ronan raised his sword, hands shaking. The thing stopped right in front of him. It didn’t speak, not with words just pressure, thick and heavy and alive.

“You were not supposed to wake up.”

The screen flashed one last message:

[SURVIVE.]

The light vanished. And whatever-it-was lunged.
