"Longwei? Longwei, if you don't move your hand in the next three seconds, I will make sure you never use it to eat ginger, or anything else, ever again."

Lanqiao’s voice was a jagged shard of ice cutting through the thick, strawberry-scented haze. The "Hundred-Fold Passion Bloom" mist was starting to thin, but the damage to her composure was already done. She was still gripping Longwei’s forearm, her knuckles white, her face a shade of crimson that put the pink fog to shame.

"I’m trying! I’m literally trying to let go!" Longwei squeaked, his voice two octaves higher than usual. "My fingers aren't listening! It’s like they’ve decided you’re a very cold, very pretty magnet!"

"Get. Off. Me."

"Mei! Senior Sister Mei!" Longwei yelled into the swirling pink clouds. "The 'Sunshine' comment was the mist talking! I don't think she actually likes me! Please tell me there’s an off-switch for this!"

Mei Lianhua’s voice drifted back, muffled and frantic. "There is no off-switch! The Passion Bloom has accelerated the Drunken Lotus’s digestion! If you don't neutralize the aphrodisiac effect with Moon-Shade Herb, the heat is going to fuse your meridians permanently! You’ll be... well, you’ll be 'Special Meditation Partners' in a way the Sect Leader definitely didn't intend!"

"Where do we get it?" Lanqiao demanded, finally shoving Longwei away, though the invisible tether immediately snapped them back within five feet of each other. "Where is the herb?"

"The Shadow-Grip Woods! It grows near the base of the weeping willows!" Mei shouted. "Go! Now! Before the second wave hits! And for the love of the Ancestors, don't stop to 'rest'!"

"Shadow-Grip Woods? At night?" Longwei groaned, even as Lanqiao grabbed his collar and began dragging him toward the pavilion’s gate. "That place is full of spirit-wasps and things that bite! Can't we just... I don't know, take a very cold bath?"

"The lake is already boiling because of you," Lanqiao hissed, her stride long and furious. "We are going to the woods. We are finding that herb. And then I am going to scrub my brain of the last ten minutes."

"Hey, I was the one called 'sunshine'!" Longwei protested, stumbling to keep up. "I’m the victim here! My reputation as the Sect’s premier slacker is in tatters!"

The transition from the manicured gardens of the Inner Circle to the oppressive canopy of the Shadow-Grip Woods was immediate. The air grew heavy and damp, the moonlight struggling to pierce the dense, interlocking branches above. Longwei felt the Drunken Lotus Pill thrumming in his chest, a rhythmic heat that seemed to pulse in time with Lanqiao’s footsteps.

"Do you feel that?" Longwei whispered, glancing at the dark thickets. "The humming? It’s getting louder."

"It’s just your overactive imagination and your oversized ego," Lanqiao snapped, though she kept her hand on the hilt of her sword. "Stay close. If we get separated by more than ten feet, the backlash will probably level this entire grove."

"Trust me, I’m not going anywhere. You’re the only thing keeping my blood from turning into actual lava right now," Longwei said. He paused, sniffing the air. "Wait. Do you smell that? It doesn't smell like trees."

"It smells like... cheap incense and desperation," Lanqiao muttered.

A soft, golden glow appeared ahead, illuminating a small clearing. Sitting on a stump was a man in robes that were far too bright for the forest, surrounded by several floating crates and a shimmering array of paper talismans.

"Halt! Travelers! Seekers of the arcane and the absurd!" the man cried, leaping to his feet with a flourish. "I am Luo Shunyi, the Merchant of Miracles! Are you lost? Hunted? Perhaps just looking for a way to spice up a very awkward midnight stroll?"

"We don't have time for this," Lanqiao said, her voice dropping to a warning growl. "Move aside, merchant."

"Oh, such frost! Such icy resolve!" Luo Shunyi grinned, his eyes darting between the two of them and the glowing sigils on their foreheads. "Wait... is that a Soul Tether? And the scent of... oh, my. That’s a Grade-9 heat signature if I’ve ever smelled one. You two are in a bit of a pickle, aren't you?"

"How do you know about the tether?" Longwei asked, squinting. "Are you a spy?"

"I’m a businessman, young master! And business is booming in the 'Accidental Cultivation Disaster' department," Luo said, plucking a talisman from the air. "You're looking for Moon-Shade Herb, right? I could tell by the way the lady is trying not to punch you and the way you’re vibrating like a struck gong."

"You have the herb?" Lanqiao asked, her eyes narrowing.

"Better! I have the 'Internal Equilibrium Talisman'!" Luo cheered. "One slap of this on your chest, and your energies will be as calm as a frozen pond. Only five hundred spirit stones. A bargain for your sanity, wouldn't you say?"

"Five hundred?" Longwei barked. "I don't even have five spirit stones! I spent my allowance on those fried buns Su brought!"

"Longwei, move back," Lanqiao commanded. "He’s a scavenger. Those talismans are fakes. Look at the brushwork; the ink is still wet."

"Fakes? My lady, you wound me!" Luo cried, but his hand moved toward a small cord at his waist. "If you won't buy, perhaps you’d like to donate your cores to my retirement fund? A Drunken Lotus core is worth more than a small kingdom!"

Suddenly, the ground beneath them erupted. Dozens of thin, glowing wires shot out of the dirt, weaving a shimmering net around the duo.

"A trap?" Longwei yelled, tripping over a root as the wires tightened. "I knew it! This is why I never leave my bed! Outside is just full of people wanting to steal your organs!"

"Stay still!" Lanqiao shouted, drawing her sword. She swung, but the blade bounced off the wires with a shower of sparks. "Spirit-binding silk? How did a low-life merchant get his hands on this?"

"I have excellent connections!" Luo laughed, stepping back as his crates began to hum. "Now, don't struggle. It’ll only make the heat worse. And we wouldn't want the boy to pop before I can harvest the elixir, would we?"

"You're... you're actually trying to cook me?" Longwei’s eyes went wide. The panic surged, and with it, the Drunken Lotus Pill reacted. A wave of pink Qi rolled off his skin, hitting the wires and turning them white-hot. "Lanqiao! The wires! They’re melting!"

"They’re not melting, they’re absorbing your Qi!" Lanqiao gasped, her face pale. "Longwei, stop! You’re feeding the trap!"

"I can't stop it! It’s like a sneeze I can't hold back!"

The heat became unbearable. The air in the small clearing began to shimmer and distort. Luo Shunyi’s eyes widened as he realized the sheer scale of the energy he was trying to contain.

"Wait, that's too much! That’s way too much power!" the merchant screamed, turning to run.

BOOM.

The energy discharge wasn't a burp this time; it was a full-body pulse of violet light. The spirit-binding wires snapped like dry twigs, sending a shockwave that knocked Luo into a nearby bush and sent the floating crates smashing into the trees.

"Run!" Lanqiao grabbed Longwei’s hand, the contact sending a jolt of electricity through both of them. "The guards will have felt that! We have to hide!"

"My legs are officially over this!" Longwei panted, but he followed as she dragged him deeper into the dark, tangled heart of the woods.

They scrambled through a dense thicket of thorns until they reached an ancient, massive cedar tree. Its trunk was partially split, forming a deep, dark hollow barely wide enough for two people.

"In here! Get in!" Lanqiao hissed.

They squeezed into the narrow space, the smell of old wood and damp earth surrounding them. Outside, the sounds of searching voices and the rustle of leaves echoed through the forest.

"Is he gone?" Longwei whispered, his chest heaving.

"Quiet," Lanqiao breathed.

The space was impossibly tight. Longwei was pressed firmly against the back of the hollow, and Lanqiao was pressed directly against him. Her cold, silk robes were the only thing providing relief from the furnace-like heat radiating from his chest.

"Lanqiao... the ten-foot rule is currently... uh... a zero-inch rule," Longwei muttered, his heart hammering against his ribs.

"I am aware," she replied, her voice strained. Her head was tucked under his chin, her breath warm against his neck. "Just... don't move. If we move, the friction will set this tree on fire."

"I’m trying not to move, but the pill... it’s doing that humming thing again. Can you feel it?"

"I feel everything, you idiot," she whispered.

The silence of the forest pressed in on them. The earlier aphrodisiac mist seemed to have left a lingering trace in their tethered souls. The violet sigils on their foreheads began to glow softly, casting a dim, intimate light inside the tree. Longwei looked down, seeing the way the light played across Lanqiao’s features—the sharp line of her jaw, the way her eyelashes cast long shadows on her cheeks.

"You know," Longwei said, his voice dropping to a low, genuine tone he rarely used. "You’re a lot less scary when you aren't trying to turn me into a popsicle."

Lanqiao didn't snap back. She didn't move. Slowly, she leaned her forehead against his chest, a long, shuddering sigh escaping her lips.

"I’m exhausted, Longwei. My whole life has been about discipline. Silence. Cold. And then you... you literally exploded into my world with a handful of ginger candy and a pink glow."

"I didn't mean to," he said softly. "I just wanted a nap."

"I know."

She shifted slightly, her hand coming up to rest tentatively on his shoulder. The contrast was staggering—the absolute, biting cold of her Qi meeting the wild, unbridled heat of his. But for the first time, it didn't feel like a battle. It felt like... balance.

"The heat is fading a bit," Longwei noted, his eyes closing as he rested his head against the wood. "Or maybe I’m just getting used to being a human stove."

"The tether is stabilizing," Lanqiao whispered. She looked up at him, her eyes no longer icy, but filled with a strange, shimmering vulnerability. The distance between them was non-existent, the air thick with the scent of winter lilies and sunshine.

"Lanqiao?"

She didn't answer with words. Instead, she leaned in, her lips inches from his ear. The mask of the 'Ice Beauty' didn't just crack; it dissolved entirely in the dark of the hollow tree.

"...Longwei," she whispered, her voice a soft, breathless caress that made his knees buckle more than the pill ever could. "Don't... don't you dare let go."

Longwei froze, his breath catching in his throat. In the deep shadows of the Shadow-Grip Woods, the lazy disciple and the frozen prodigy found themselves trapped in a different kind of web—one that no merchant could sell and no elixir could truly explain.

The violet sky didn’t just look like a bruise; it looked like the world was bleeding out. Longwei stared at the swirling clouds, his hand still anchored to Lanqiao’s as they scrambled up the jagged path leading toward the sect’s main peak. Every step felt like a betrayal by his own muscles, but the tether pulse was screaming at him—a high-pitched, spiritual alarm that made his teeth ache."Do you hear that?" Longwei panted, his voice barely audible over the screeching wind. "It sounds like a million nails on a chalkboard. My brain is literally vibrating."Lanqiao didn't look back, her grip on his hand tightening until his knuckles popped. "It’s the sound of the world’s foundations cracking, Longwei. Focus. If you trip now, I can't promise I won't just drag you by your ankles.""That’s the spirit! Tough love is really what I need during the apocalypse," Longwei wheezed. He looked up, squinting through the haze. "Wait. Is that the Sect Leader? Up there, near the Observation Deck?"High

She didn't wait for the disciples to return with help. She couldn't. The oily black veins from the Sun-Slayer needle were already mapping a dark, lethal geography across Longwei’s chest, racing toward his heart. With a desperate surge of Qi, she scooped his limp body into her arms. He was terrifyingly heavy, his skin radiating a sickly, flickering heat that fought against her natural cold. She sprinted. She didn't head back toward the pavilion where the guards were; she went deeper into the crags behind the grove, toward a narrow fissure in the rock she’d discovered years ago during her solitary training."Hold on," she hissed, her breath hitching as she ducked into the damp, shadowed interior of the cave. "Just hold on, you idiot. You survived a Grade-9 pill. You are not dying to a piece of scrap metal

The damp silence of the Silent Lotus Chamber felt like a physical weight, pressing against Longwei’s chest as he stared at the top of Lanqiao’s head. Her shoulders were still shaking, her fingers digging into his forearms with a strength that suggested she was trying to anchor herself to the physical world before the darkness behind that obsidian gate dragged her under."Uh, Lanqiao?" Longwei started, his voice cracking. "You’re, uh... you’re kind of turning my biceps into ice sculptures. Not that I mind the cooling sensation after the whole 'human furnace' thing, but I think I’m losing feeling in my thumbs."Lanqiao didn't look up. She took a ragged, shuddering breath, her forehead still pressed against his silk-clad shoulder. "I told you. Never speak of it.""Trust me, I have zero desire to talk about the giant, evil-looking demon door inside your soul," Longwei whispered, trying to sound more confident than he felt. "I’m a simple man. Lanqiao’s voice was a frantic anchor in the sea of gold."I couldn't let go if I wanted to!" Longwei yelled back, his voice straining against the roar of his own blood. "I think my skin is actually turning into light! Lanqiao, am I a ghost? Tell me I'm not a ghost!""You’re not a ghost, you’re a fool who’s about to blow a hole in the mountain!"She yanked him closer, her icy Qi slamming into his chest like a frozen tidal wave. Usually, the collision of their powers felt like a car crash, but this time, the rhythm of the drums acted like a conductor’s baton. The heat didn't fight the cold. It wrapped around it."Whoa," Longwei breathed, his eyes wide. "The floor is... moving. Or am I moving? Lanqiao, why does the air feel like honey?""It’s the resonance,"

Longwei whispered, his voice barely a vibration in the dark."I’m trying to decide if I should kill you now or wait until the guards find us," Lanqiao murmured against his neck. Her voice didn't have its usual icy edge; it was soft, frayed at the margins."Waiting sounds better. More options that way," Longwei said, trying to shift his weight. His knee bumped hers. "Also, my left leg is officially asleep. It’s gone to the Great Beyond, Lanqiao.""Don't move. I mean it.""The ten-foot rule is really being tested here," he teased, though his own face was burning.
