The golden radiance didn't just illuminate the Great Hall; it devoured it. The lanterns, the silk tapestries, even the shocked face of Lin Xueyan—everything vanished behind a wall of shimmering, molten light.

"Longwei! Don't let go!" Lanqiao’s voice was a frantic anchor in the sea of gold.

"I couldn't let go if I wanted to!" Longwei yelled back, his voice straining against the roar of his own blood. "I think my skin is actually turning into light! Lanqiao, am I a ghost? Tell me I'm not a ghost!"

"You’re not a ghost, you’re a fool who’s about to blow a hole in the mountain!"

She yanked him closer, her icy Qi slamming into his chest like a frozen tidal wave. Usually, the collision of their powers felt like a car crash, but this time, the rhythm of the drums acted like a conductor’s baton. The heat didn't fight the cold. It wrapped around it.

"Whoa," Longwei breathed, his eyes wide. "The floor is... moving. Or am I moving? Lanqiao, why does the air feel like honey?"

"It’s the resonance," she whispered, her face inches from his, her eyes glowing with a terrifying, violet intensity. "Our spirits are... they’re synchronized. Stop talking and just breathe with me."

"Breathe? I can barely remember how to blink!"

The audience was a blurred mess of panicked shouting and retreating footsteps. Lin Xueyan was somewhere in the distance, shouting something about a foul, but his voice was drowned out by the sudden, crystalline chime of a bell.

"Enough!"

Sect Leader Qiao’s voice cut through the chaos, and the golden dome shattered. The light retreated into Longwei’s chest with the force of a vacuum, leaving him gasping and stumbling.

"Get them out of here," Qiao commanded, his silhouette appearing through the thinning mist. He looked less like a leader and more like a man trying to prevent a volcanic eruption. "Elder Han, take them to the Silent Lotus Chamber. Now. Before they level the palace."

"Wait, what about the buffet?" Longwei wheezed as Elder Han appeared at his side, grabbing his shoulder. "I didn't get a single dumpling!"

"You can eat your weight in dumplings if you survive the next hour," Han snapped, his face grim. "Move!"

The Silent Lotus Chamber lived up to its name. It was a circular room deep within the mountain, carved from solid, spirit-dampening basalt. The only light came from a pool of bioluminescent moss in the center.

"Okay, we're here," Longwei said, leaning against the cold stone wall the moment the heavy jade doors thudded shut. "Can I stop glowing now? It’s really distracting. I feel like a very oversized firefly."

"Sit down, Longwei," Lanqiao said. She wasn't looking at him. She was pacing, her hands shaking so violently she had to tuck them into her sleeves. "The pill... it’s not just digesting anymore. It’s bonded. And because of that stupid dance, my core is reacting to it. I can feel your heart beating in my own chest."

"Is that why I suddenly have a craving for ice water and a desire to glare at everyone?" Longwei tried to joke, but his voice cracked. He slid down the wall, his chest heaving. "It hurts, Lanqiao. It’s not just heat anymore. It’s like... like there’s a giant bird trying to hatch under my ribs."

Lanqiao stopped pacing and looked at him. The "Ice Beauty" mask was gone, replaced by a raw, naked fear that made Longwei’s stomach flip. "It’s the Ice Phoenix. She’s... she’s waking up because of the Lotus energy. If we don't balance this right now, she’ll burn from the inside out. And she’ll take you with her."

"Great. Fantastic. I always wanted to be part of a mythological barbecue," Longwei groaned. He patted the floor next to him. "So, what do we do? Do we hold hands and think happy thoughts?"

"We have to cultivate. Deeply," she said, stepping toward him. She sat down cross-legged, facing him so closely their knees touched. "Not like the casual sessions in the pavilion. We have to open our soul-gates. Total transparency."

Longwei winced. "Total transparency? You mean you’re going to see all my secrets? Like the time I accidentally broke the Sect Leader’s favorite teapot and blamed it on a stray cat?"

"Longwei, shut up!" Lanqiao hissed, though a tiny, hysterical laugh escaped her lips. "I’m serious. If you hold anything back—any fear, any doubt—the tether will snap. And then we die. Do you understand?"

Longwei looked at her. Really looked at her. He saw the sweat beading on her forehead, the way her violet eyes were searching his for any sign of strength.

"Okay," he said softly, his voice finally losing its sarcastic edge. "No jokes. Just... tell me what to do. I’m not very good at the 'soul' stuff. I usually just try to sleep through it."

"Give me your hands," she commanded.

He reached out, and the moment their palms met, the world didn't just disappear—it exploded into color.

"Whoa," Longwei gasped. "I’m... I’m seeing your veins. No, wait. Those are your meridians. They’re like rivers of ice."

"And yours are like flows of lava," Lanqiao whispered, her eyes closed. "It’s so loud in here. Your mind... it’s so noisy, Longwei."

"Sorry, I have a lot of internal monologues about snacks," he muttered. "But wait... Lanqiao, your core. It’s so cold. Are you always this lonely?"

He felt her flinch through the connection. A wave of profound, biting isolation washed over him—years of sitting in the dark, of being the 'perfect' disciple, of never being allowed to fail.

"Don't look at that," she pleaded, her voice trembling in his head.

"I can't help it," he said, his own emotions leaking into the void. He shared the warmth of his naps, the simple joy of a sunny afternoon, the absolute lack of ambition that he used as a shield against the world’s expectations. "Here. Take some of the 'lazy.' It’s good for you. It’ll help you relax."

"It’s... it’s so warm," she breathed.

For a long time, there was only the sound of their shared breathing. The pink and blue energies began to swirl around them in a slow, hypnotic orbit, turning the dark chamber into a nebula of violet light. Longwei felt a sense of peace he’d never known. It wasn't just the pill stabilizing; it was the feeling of not being alone in his own head.

"Is this what it’s supposed to feel like?" he asked, his voice a mere echo in the spiritual space. "It’s almost... nice. Aside from the whole 'potential explosion' thing."

"It’s more than nice," Lanqiao whispered. "It’s terrifying. I’ve never let anyone in this far. I didn't think I could."

"Well, you picked the right guy," Longwei teased gently. "I’m too lazy to judge you. I’m just happy to be here."

He felt her spirit lean into his, a metaphorical embrace that felt more intimate than any touch. The Drunken Lotus Pill finally began to settle, its chaotic heat refining into a steady, powerful thrum that harmonized perfectly with the Ice Phoenix’s song.

"We're doing it," Lanqiao said, a note of wonder in her voice. "The energies are... they’re merging. Longwei, look at the center. Look at the core."

Longwei 'looked,' turning his spiritual gaze toward the very center of their shared consciousness. He expected to see the golden lotus or the blue bird.

Instead, he saw a wall.

A massive, obsidian-black gate stood at the edge of Lanqiao’s deepest soul-well. It was covered in heavy, rusted chains, and at its center was a glowing, crimson seal that pulsed like a dying star.

"What is that?" Longwei asked, his mental voice sharp with sudden alarm. "Lanqiao, what’s behind that door?"

He felt her entire being go rigid. The warmth of the room vanished, replaced by a chill that was different from her usual ice. This was the cold of a grave.

"Don't look!" she screamed, but it was too late.

The crimson seal flared. Longwei felt a jolt of pure, unadulterated malice hit him—a sensation of ancient, hungry shadows and the scent of burning blood. For a split second, the image of a twisted, demonic face flickered across the obsidian gate, its eyes locking onto his with a gaze that promised to devour the world.

"Lanqiao, there’s a seal!" Longwei yelled in the physical world, his eyes snapping open. He tried to pull his hands away, but they were stuck fast by the remaining Qi. "There’s something inside you! It’s not the Phoenix! It’s—"

"Stop!"

Lanqiao collapsed forward, her forehead hitting his shoulder. She was sobbing, deep, racking heaves that shook her entire body. The violet light died instantly, leaving them in the dim, greenish glow of the moss.

"Don't ask me," she choked out, her fingers digging into his arms. "Please, Longwei. If you ever want to have a normal day again... never speak of what you saw."

Longwei sat there, frozen, the image of the demonic seal burned into his retinas. His heart was no longer dancing; it was hammering a warning against his ribs.

"Lanqiao," he whispered, looking down at the top of her head. "I think the 'Special Meditation Partner' thing just got a lot more complicated than a few burps and a dance-off."

She didn't answer. She only clung to him tighter, as if the lazy, glowing boy was the only thing keeping the darkness behind that gate from breaking through and swallowing them both.

The violet sky didn’t just look like a bruise; it looked like the world was bleeding out. Longwei stared at the swirling clouds, his hand still anchored to Lanqiao’s as they scrambled up the jagged path leading toward the sect’s main peak. Every step felt like a betrayal by his own muscles, but the tether pulse was screaming at him—a high-pitched, spiritual alarm that made his teeth ache."Do you hear that?" Longwei panted, his voice barely audible over the screeching wind. "It sounds like a million nails on a chalkboard. My brain is literally vibrating."Lanqiao didn't look back, her grip on his hand tightening until his knuckles popped. "It’s the sound of the world’s foundations cracking, Longwei. Focus. If you trip now, I can't promise I won't just drag you by your ankles.""That’s the spirit! Tough love is really what I need during the apocalypse," Longwei wheezed. He looked up, squinting through the haze. "Wait. Is that the Sect Leader? Up there, near the Observation Deck?"High

She didn't wait for the disciples to return with help. She couldn't. The oily black veins from the Sun-Slayer needle were already mapping a dark, lethal geography across Longwei’s chest, racing toward his heart. With a desperate surge of Qi, she scooped his limp body into her arms. He was terrifyingly heavy, his skin radiating a sickly, flickering heat that fought against her natural cold. She sprinted. She didn't head back toward the pavilion where the guards were; she went deeper into the crags behind the grove, toward a narrow fissure in the rock she’d discovered years ago during her solitary training."Hold on," she hissed, her breath hitching as she ducked into the damp, shadowed interior of the cave. "Just hold on, you idiot. You survived a Grade-9 pill. You are not dying to a piece of scrap metal

The damp silence of the Silent Lotus Chamber felt like a physical weight, pressing against Longwei’s chest as he stared at the top of Lanqiao’s head. Her shoulders were still shaking, her fingers digging into his forearms with a strength that suggested she was trying to anchor herself to the physical world before the darkness behind that obsidian gate dragged her under."Uh, Lanqiao?" Longwei started, his voice cracking. "You’re, uh... you’re kind of turning my biceps into ice sculptures. Not that I mind the cooling sensation after the whole 'human furnace' thing, but I think I’m losing feeling in my thumbs."Lanqiao didn't look up. She took a ragged, shuddering breath, her forehead still pressed against his silk-clad shoulder. "I told you. Never speak of it.""Trust me, I have zero desire to talk about the giant, evil-looking demon door inside your soul," Longwei whispered, trying to sound more confident than he felt. "I’m a simple man. The silence in the hollow of the ancient cedar was so thick it felt like a third person was squeezed in there with them. Longwei could feel the frantic drumming of Lanqiao’s heart against his chest, a rhythm that was slowly syncing with the heavy, thrumming pulse of the Drunken Lotus Pill."Are you... still holding your breath?" Longwei whispered, his voice barely a vibration in the dark."I’m trying to decide if I should kill you now or wait until the guards find us," Lanqiao murmured against his neck. Her voice didn't have its usual icy edge; it was soft, frayed at the margins."Waiting sounds better. More options that way," Longwei said, trying to shift his weight. His knee bumped hers. "Also, my left leg is officially asleep. It’s gone to the Great Beyond, Lanqiao.""Don't move. I mean it.""The ten-foot rule is really being tested here," he teased, though his own face was burning. Longwei, if you don't move your hand in the next three seconds, I will make sure you never use it to eat ginger, or anything else, ever again."Lanqiao’s voice was a jagged shard of ice cutting through the thick, strawberry-scented haze. The "Hundred-Fold Passion Bloom" mist was starting to thin, but the damage to her composure was already done. She was still gripping Longwei’s forearm, her knuckles white, her face a shade of crimson that put the pink fog to shame."I’m trying! I’m literally trying to let go!" Longwei squeaked, his voice two octaves higher than usual. "My fingers aren't listening! It’s like they’ve decided you’re a very cold, very pretty magnet!""Get. Off. Me.""Mei! Senior Sister Mei!" Longwei yelled into the swirling pink clouds. "The 'Sunshine' comment was the mist talking! I don't think she actually likes me!
