Ren walked home with the silver coin still in his pocket. His cheek was swollen and the cut on his forehead stung every time he blinked. The streets were busy with people heading home after work. No one looked at the quiet boy in the cheap cloak.
When he opened the door of the small house, Lisa was already waiting. She saw his face and her eyes went wide.
“What happened this time?” she asked, pulling him inside.
“I’m fine,” Ren said. He tried to smile but it hurt. “Just a fight at the academy.”
Luna rolled her wheelchair closer. “Did you win?”
Ren nodded once. He took out the silver coin and a few bronze ones and put them on the table. “I also got paid.”
Lisa did not look happy about the money. She made him sit down and cleaned the cut with careful hands. “You can’t keep coming home hurt like this. One day it will be worse.”
“I know,” Ren said quietly. He did not tell them about the public trial or how many students had watched. He did not tell them about the grass that had grown from the ground and held a noble boy in place. Some things were safer to keep secret for now.
After a simple meal he went to his small room and closed the door. Only then did he open his hand.
A thin blade of grass grew from his palm. He made it longer, then shorter, then shaped it into a small knife. It felt light but strong. When he pushed the feeling harder, the knife turned into a short sword. The edges looked sharp enough to cut wood.
He practiced until his eyes felt heavy. The power still cost almost nothing. That was the part that surprised him most.
The next morning he returned to the academy. Students stared when he walked through the gates. Some whispered. Some stepped aside like he was bad luck. Victor and Leo were nowhere in sight.
A teacher stopped him near the main building. “The principal wants to see you. Now.”
Ren followed the teacher to a quiet office on the second floor. The principal sat behind a wide desk. The scar over his eye looked deeper in the morning light.
“Sit,” the principal said.
Ren sat.
“You used an unknown talent in a public fight against a baron’s son,” the principal said. “That has already caused problems. Victor’s father sent a message last night. He is not happy.”
Ren stayed quiet.
“The academy does not want trouble with the Kane family,” the principal continued. “From today you will no longer work as a cleaner here. You will also stay away from Victor and his friends. If another fight happens, you will be the one who leaves. Do you understand?”
Ren nodded. “Yes.”
The principal studied him for a long moment. “Your talent showed as unknown. That usually means it is too weak to measure. Do not make people think it is something special. Keep your head down.”
Ren left the office with those words in his ears. Keep your head down. He had done that for years. It had never stopped the kicks or the spit.
He walked toward the back of the academy where the practice fields were empty. He needed to test the grass away from eyes.
He found a quiet corner near the old storage sheds. No students came here. Ren stood still and pushed the warm feeling outward again.
Grass shot up around his feet in a wide circle. He made it grow taller than his head, then shaped the tops into hard points. He formed a round shield on his left arm and a long spear in his right hand. Both felt solid. When he swung the spear, it cut cleanly through a wooden post.
He was still testing the spear when footsteps sounded behind him.
Victor stood there with Leo and two older boys Ren had never seen before. The older boys looked stronger. Their clothes were even finer than Victor’s.
Victor’s face was dark with anger. “You thought winning yesterday was the end?”
Ren let the spear and shield turn back into normal grass and fade away. “The teacher said no more fights.”
One of the older boys laughed. “Teachers don’t decide everything. My name is Drake Kane. Victor is my cousin. I heard a cleaner boy made him look weak in front of half the academy.”
Drake stepped closer. He was taller than Victor and carried a short sword at his side. “I came to see this famous grass talent myself.”
Leo grinned. “Show him, Ren. Or are you only brave when the teachers are watching?”
Ren’s hands stayed at his sides. He could feel the grass under the dirt waiting for him. But three against one, and two of them looked trained, was not the same as the trial yesterday.
Drake drew his sword halfway. “I’m not asking. Use your power. Or I will cut that cheap cloak off your back and make you crawl back to the principal.”
Ren looked at the three of them. Running would only make them chase him. Calling for help would make him look weak again. The warm feeling in his chest pulsed once, stronger than before.
He raised one hand.
Grass exploded from the ground in a sudden wave. It did not just wrap around ankles this time. Long vines shot toward Drake’s sword arm and Victor’s legs at the same time. Harder leaves spun through the air like small blades.
Drake swung his sword and cut several vines, but more grew instantly. One thick vine wrapped around his wrist and squeezed. The sword dropped. Victor tried to burn the grass with fire, but Ren made new vines grow faster than the flames could spread.
Leo stumbled back when a wall of sharp grass rose in front of him.
In less than ten seconds all three were held in place. Drake’s face turned red as he fought the vine on his arm. Victor’s fire sputtered and died. Leo had stopped grinning.
Ren stood in the middle of the green circle, breathing evenly. The power still felt easy to control.
Footsteps ran toward them. Two teachers appeared, shouting for everyone to stop.
The grass faded the moment Ren let go. Drake picked up his sword, face dark with hate. Victor looked at Ren like he wanted to kill him on the spot.
One teacher grabbed Ren’s shoulder. “You again? The principal just warned you!”
Drake spoke first, voice cold and polite. “We only came to talk. This boy attacked us without reason. Look at the marks on the ground.”
The teachers looked at the torn dirt and burned patches. Their faces hardened when they turned back to Ren.
“Come with us,” one said. “The principal will decide what happens now.”
As they led Ren away, Drake leaned close and spoke so only he could hear.
“You made a mistake showing that power twice. My uncle already knows your name. The next time we meet, it will not be on school grounds.”
Ren did not answer. He walked between the teachers toward the main building again.
Behind him, Victor watched with a small, ugly smile.
The real trouble had only just begun.

Chapter 11
The bottle’s power faded faster than Ren hoped.By the time he reached the lower ridge, the strength in his arms was already gone. The cut on his shoulder burned with every step. Blood had soaked through his cloak. He kept one hand pressed against it and used the other to push branches aside.Floor 3 did not care that he was hurt. Distant howls echoed between the twisted trees. Something large moved in the dark to his left. Ren did not stop to look. He only had one goal now—reach the teleport point and give Kael the box.He checked his inventory for the tenth time. The black box was still there. Still closed. Still cold.A branch snapped behind him.Ren spun and grew a wall of grass without thinking. Two dark shapes stopped just short of it. Not Drake. Two of the wolf-like monsters from earlier. Level 7. Their yellow eyes fixed on the blood on his cloak. They split left and right.Ren’s mana was low. He could not build a full forest like before. He made sharp blades of grass and sent
Chapter 10
Five days passed quieter than Ren expected. He hunted every day on Floor 2. His level reached 5. The grass listened better now. He could make thicker shields and faster spears. The cut on his arm healed. Lisa stopped asking so many questions when he came home with coins and meat. Luna smiled more when he brought the sweet red fruits she liked. But the badge under his shirt never felt warm. And Drake never showed up.On the morning of the fifth day Ren went back to the rocky hill on Floor 1. Kael was already waiting.“You’re stronger,” Kael said when he saw him. “Good. You will need it.”He took out a new map. This one was marked with a red X deeper than anything Ren had seen.“Floor 3,” Kael said. “There is an old supply cache hidden in a broken stone tower. Inside is a small black box. Bring the box back. Do not open it. Do not let anyone else touch it. You have until tomorrow night.”Ren looked at the map. Floor 3. The monsters there were higher level. Parties of five or six usually
Chapter 9
Ren checked the map one more time before he left the safe zone. The cave Kael marked sat deeper on Floor 1 than he had ever gone. The path led past the normal rabbit fields and into rocky ground where goblins liked to hide.He kept his cloak hood up and walked fast. The new badge Kael gave him stayed hidden under his shirt. He did not know what the mark on it meant, and he did not want other adventurers asking questions. The first hour was quiet. He avoided groups and used the grass only when no one could see. A few low-level goblins tried to jump him near a dry stream. He wrapped their legs and finished them quickly. He did not bother harvesting. He needed to save time and mana.By the time the rocky hills came into view, the light in the dungeon had started to fade. Night came early this deep. Ren slowed down and watched the shadows. The cave mouth was exactly where the map showed. It was low and narrow, half hidden by thick bushes. Faint blue light glowed from inside.Ren stopped a

Ren’s fingers tightened around the black stone. The two men in dark coats kept walking toward him. Their steps were slow and sure, like they already knew how this would end.He could feel Lisa and Luna inside the house. One shout from him and they would know something was wrong. One fight outside the door and the Kane family would have a reason to drag them into it.Ren crushed the stone. It broke with a soft crack. Black dust slipped between his fingers and vanished. For a second nothing happened. Then a voice spoke right beside his ear, calm and clear.“Decision received. Stay still.”The two men were only ten steps away when the air behind them shimmered. Kael stepped out of nothing, like he had been waiting just out of sight. His sword was already in his hand. The men stopped short.“You again,” one of them said.Kael did not answer with words. He moved once. The plain sword flashed. Both men staggered back, deep cuts across their coats. Not enough to kill, but enough to make them
Chapter 7
Ren barely made it back to the safe zone before dark. Every step sent a sharp pain through his side. He sold the cores quickly, bought stronger medicine, and left without talking to anyone. The black stone Kael had given him sat heavy in his pouch the whole time. When he opened the door of the small house, Lisa took one look at him and pulled him inside.“You’re hurt worse than yesterday,” she said. She made him sit and checked the bruise. It had turned dark purple. “What happened this time?”Ren told her the short version. Three men from the Kane family found him again. A stranger named Kael stepped in just long enough to stop them from finishing the job. Then Kael gave him a choice and a black stone.Lisa’s face went pale. “You cannot trust people who hide their names. And the Kane family will not stop.”Luna wheeled closer. Her eyes were wide. “Will they come here?”Ren shook his head even though he was not sure. “I’ll keep hunting far from the city. They want me, not you.”He took

Drake pointed his sword at Ren. “Last chance. Kneel and apologize for making the Kane family look bad. Do that and maybe we only break your arms.”The two men behind him spread out left and right. Their coats hid more weapons. Kael stayed where he was, hand resting lightly on his own sword, watching like this was interesting instead of dangerous.Ren did not kneel. He pushed the warm feeling in his chest outward.Grass exploded from the dirt in every direction. Thick vines shot toward Drake’s legs and the two men’s arms at the same time. Sharp leaves spun through the air like knives.Drake burned the first vines with a burst of fire, the same way Victor had. But Ren made more grow faster. One vine wrapped around Drake’s sword arm and squeezed hard. The two men cut through their own vines with practiced swings, but the grass kept coming.Kael still did not move.Drake shouted and forced more fire down his arm. The vine blackened and broke. He charged straight at Ren, sword glowing red.
