The murmurs in the crowd grew louder as the man’s voice echoed through the grand entrance of the banquet hall. The security guard stiffened, exchanging a quick glance with his colleague before speaking into his earpiece.

“Copy that. Initiating system reboot.”

Sierra’s confident smirk faltered as a second guard approached her and Marcus. “Miss Sierra, Mr. Marcus—we’ll need you to step aside for a moment while we refresh the guest registry.”

“What?!” Sierra snapped, clearly affronted. “Are you serious? I already got in! My name was verified!”

“I understand, ma’am, but we’ve been instructed to re-check all entries due to a last-minute update from Nova’s director’s office. It’ll only take a minute.”

Alice folded her arms calmly, her expression slowly regaining composure as Sierra and Marcus were gently ushered aside like everyone else. Ethan took out his phone and tapped rapidly.

Seconds later, the man in the suit, now clearly identified as one of Nova’s executive assistants, stepped toward them briskly, holding a tablet. His eyes scanned the crowd before settling on Alice and Ethan.

“There you are,” he said with relief. “Miss Morgan, Mr. Storm—our sincerest apologies. Your names were just added directly by Director Logan herself. The update didn’t sync in time.”

Sierra’s jaw dropped.

“You’re—what?”

The assistant didn’t even glance her way. He addressed the security guard instead. “Register them immediately. VIP status. They even have a VIP badge. Escort them inside personally.”

“Yes, sir.”

Sierra looked like she’d swallowed a lemon. Her lips parted, but no words came out. Marcus just gawked.

Alice turned to Sierra, her voice honeyed with satisfaction. “Looks like my knees are safe tonight.”

The crowd, sensing the shift in power, began whispering excitedly. Some even chuckled.

Sierra tried to salvage her pride. “T-this doesn’t prove anything! You were just lucky—”

Alice held up a finger. “A bet’s a bet, Sierra. You challenged me. You mocked me. And now, well…”

She tilted her head toward the ground. “Time to pay up.”

Sierra flushed scarlet, her hands clenched into fists.

“Forget it,” Marcus hissed. “This is ridiculous.”

But the murmurs around them were growing. Several people were filming now.

Alice’s tone dropped, low and dangerous. “Walk away if you want, Sierra. But everyone here will know exactly what that means.”

Sierra trembled in rage, but she couldn’t move. She stood there, paralyzed—neither kneeling nor retreating.

The assistant turned politely to Alice again. “Shall I escort you in now, Miss Morgan?”

Alice offered a dazzling smile, slipping her hand into Ethan’s. “Please do.”

As they walked past Sierra and Marcus, Alice paused for a second and whispered just loud enough, “You were right about one thing, Sierra. Ethan and I are perfect for each other.”

Ethan leaned down, adding in a deadly murmur, “Next time you laugh at her, make sure you’re not the punchline.”

With that, they entered the grand Nova banquet hall, leaving Sierra humiliated, her bet lost, and her pride in pieces.

And the night had only just begun.

Ethan cut in, calm but firm. “It is.” Elsa blinked. “You’re very confident for someone who said he’s never done this before.” Ethan didn’t look up. “I don’t need experience to recognize pain.” That shut her up faster than anything else had. Norka squeezed his hand again, harder this time. “I can’t hold it,” she whispered. “Yes, you can,” Ethan replied immediately. Her breathing hitched. “I don’t think I can—” “You can.” Not louder. Just steadier. Another contraction hit, and she cried out sharply, body tensing. Karpeta turned away for a second, exhaling. “This is way too fast…” Linda responded instantly. “It doesn’t matter what speed it is. It’s happening.” Elsa grabbed another towel. “I have towels. I have… so many towels. Why do I have so many towels and no plan?” Karpeta glanced at her. “Because you hoard emotional support fabric.” “I DO NOT—” “Shhh,” Linda snapped again. Elsa immediately lowered her voice. “Sorry.” A pause.

The shift was instant. One second they were standing in a tight circle of maps, theories, scribbled notes, and unanswered questions—voices overlapping, tension coiled but contained— and the next— a scream tore straight through the apartment. Sharp. Raw. Real. “AUNTY NORKA!” For a heartbeat, everything stalled like the world had forgotten how to move. Karpeta reacted first—already halfway to the hallway before her mind fully caught up. “What was that—?” Elsa’s head snapped toward the sound, eyes widening. “That’s her—! That’s Norka!” Ethan didn’t even wait for the sentence to finish. He was already gone. Footsteps slammed into the corridor like a breaking storm. “Ethan, wait—!” Elsa shouted, but he didn’t slow down. Doors blurred past them, the narrow hallway suddenly feeling longer, tighter, like it was resisting their urgency. Another sound came—more strained this time. A fractured cry that turned the air cold. Karpeta muttered under her breath, breaking into a run

“People don’t usually deliver existential warnings calmly unless they’ve normalized the threat.” Karpeta glanced at her. “That’s not comforting.” “I didn’t intend it to be,” Linda said. Ethan pushed off the wall slightly. “There’s more.” Karpeta groaned softly. “Of course there is.” Elsa leaned back, arms crossed. “Always is.” Linda reopened her laptop again instinctively, like information might stabilize the situation. “Tell me,” she said. Ethan exhaled. “There’s a higher authority in Cavern Bar.” That stopped Linda’s typing immediately. “…Repeat that,” she said. Ethan did. “A higher authority. Above Administrator Veyron.” Linda’s eyes sharpened. “That’s not documented anywhere in our registry.” “Yeah,” Elsa said. “We noticed.” Karpeta’s gaze flicked between them. “You’re telling me Veyron isn’t at the top?” Ethan shook his head. “No.” Linda leaned back slowly. “…That’s a structural contradiction,” she murmured. “Everything we’ve mapped assumes Veyron is the

“…We need to breathe for a second.” Ethan didn’t respond right away. His eyes stayed forward. Thinking. Elsa softened her tone. “Just for a few hours.” “We go back.” “We map everything we know.” “And we stop trying to solve it while we’re still inside the noise.” A quiet pause. Then she added: “You always say patterns matter.” “This is you missing the pattern because you’re standing inside it.” Ethan finally leaned back slightly in his seat. “…Go home,” he repeated. Elsa nodded. “Yes.” Silence stretched between them again. Then Ethan gave a small nod. “…Alright.” Elsa blinked. “That easy?” He started the car. “No.” A pause. “It just means I agree with you.” Elsa exhaled, relieved in spite of herself. “Good.” As the car pulled away from the hidden entrance and merged into the distant glow of the city roads, neither of them spoke for a while. But the silence this time wasn’t empty. It was thinking silence. Behind them, Cavern Bar disappeared into the dark

The tension inside Cavern Bar didn’t fade when they left.It followed them out.Like the air itself had decided Ethan and Elsa weren’t done yet.Outside, the night hit colder than expected. The city lights stretched across the distance in uneven clusters, flickering like something half-awake.Ethan stepped down the last stair from the hidden entrance without looking back.Behind him, Elsa paused for half a second longer than necessary, as if she expected the doorway to say something to her. Then she followed.“…I hate that place,” she muttered under her breath.Ethan gave a quiet, almost absent reply.“Yeah.”Elsa shot him a look. “That’s it? Just ‘yeah’?”“You said it first,” he replied, still walking.“That doesn’t mean you can outsource emotional depth to me.”A faint exhale—almost a laugh, but not quite—slipped from him. “Noted.”They reached the bottom of the stairway where the car waited in the dim spill of a broken streetlamp. The engine was off.Everything was quiet again. But

Even the injured enforcer looked down, suddenly fascinated by the floor.Ethan exhaled slowly.“…Harry didn’t just go missing.”His voice lowered slightly.“He went looking for something.”Elsa tilted her head.“And people just… let him?”A bitter voice from the side answered before Ethan could.“People don’t ‘let’ Storms do anything.”Another added,“They move like they already have permission from reality itself.”Ethan ignored the chatter and continued.“And he found at least part of it.”The injured enforcer flinched again, shoulders tightening.“I don’t know what he found,” he said quickly. “I swear, I don’t— I wasn’t in those rooms, I wasn’t part of that meeting—”Ethan raised a hand slightly. Not forceful.Just enough. The man went quiet immediately. Not from threat this time. From exhaustion.Ethan’s tone softened a fraction.“What else did he do while he was here?”The enforcer hesitated. Then shook his head.“…He wasn’t normal.”A bitter laugh escaped him.“None of them are.
