The sky didn't just turn red; it hemorrhaged. A violent, pulsating crimson bled across the horizon, turning Rian’s window into a frame for a dying world. Then came the hum—a low-frequency vibration that rattled his teeth and made the air taste like ozone and copper.
"Hey, Rian! You seeing this?"
Marcus, his neighbor, was screaming through the thin apartment wall. Rian stumbled back from the glass, his heart hammering against his ribs.
"I’m looking at it, Marcus! Is the sun actually bleeding? What the hell is going on?"
"It’s not just the sky, man! Check your phone! My screen is literally glowing. It’s like a hologram is stuck to my eyeballs."
"My phone is dead. It’s been dead for hours."
"Forget the phone! Look at the air, Rian! Look at the text!"
Rian blinked, and finally, he saw it. Floating in the middle of his living room, translucent blue letters burned with a sickening neon intensity.
‘INTEGRATION COMMENCING. 0.01%... 0.05%...’
"You seeing the blue letters, Rian? I just got a prompt. It says I’m an ‘A-Rank Firestarter.’ I can feel the heat, dude! My hands are literally smoking!"
Rian reached out, his fingers trembling as they touched the glowing text. Instead of a status screen, his vision fractured.
"Marcus, I don't have a rank. My screen... it’s all just gibberish. Everything is scrolling in lines of red code."
"What do you mean, gibberish? Everyone gets a class. Try hitting the help button."
"There is no help button! It’s all flashing ‘ERROR: CORRUPTED DATA’ and ‘SYSTEM OVERFLOW.’ My head feels like it’s being carved out with a spoon."
"Maybe you’re just glitching? Refresh it or something! Close your eyes and reopen them."
"I’m closing them, Marcus, I’m reopening them, I’m screaming at the wall—nothing! It’s just showing me a black hole of broken symbols. I think the system missed me."
"Missed you? That’s impossible. Wait, hold on. There’s a scream coming from the hallway."
Rian pressed his ear to the door. Outside, the muffled sound of tearing fabric and wet, rhythmic thuds echoed through the corridor.
"Marcus, someone’s dying out there."
"I can’t help them! I’m still trying to figure out how to stop my curtains from catching fire. My hands won’t stop sparking!"
"Control it, Marcus! Try to focus on the fire, not the fear!"
"I’m trying! But the blue screen won’t go away! It says I have to 'Initiate Combat' to stabilize my core. What does that even mean?"
"It means we’re screwed. My screen just turned solid black. It’s not even showing error codes anymore."
"Rian, listen to me. Get out of there. My wall is shaking. Something big is moving in the hallway."
"I’m locked in, Marcus! The door handle won’t turn. It’s like the apartment became a cage."
CRACK.
The solid oak of Rian’s front door splintered inward. A heavy, clawed limb, slick with gore, punched through the wood, inches from Rian’s face.
"Marcus! There’s a thing! It’s inside the apartment!"
"Run, Rian! Use your skills! Do something!"
"I told you, I don't have any! I’m just a guy in his underwear with a broken interface!"
"Throw something! Improvise! The system rewards tactical initiative!"
The creature shoved harder, the door groaning under the pressure of its bulk. It was a mass of grey, twisted muscle and elongated, needle-like teeth. Rian scrambled backward, his heel catching on the heavy marble bust of his grandfather that sat on the entryway table.
"I’m not a tactical genius, Marcus! I’m a liability!"
"Then die fighting! Don't just sit there!"
Rian tripped, his body sprawling backward. The marble statue tumbled with him, but as he hit the floor, his foot clipped the heavy base. The statue didn't fall to the carpet; it went airborne, spinning end-over-end.
The monster lunged, teeth bared, eyes glowing with a feral, system-induced malice. It didn't expect a projectile.
THUD.
The heavy stone base connected perfectly with the creature’s temple. A spray of black, viscous fluid coated the wall. The beast crumpled, sliding to the floor with a wheeze that sounded like a deflating tire.
Silence reclaimed the room, thick and suffocating.
"Rian? Rian! Did you hit it? Tell me you hit it!"
Rian sat on the floor, chest heaving, staring at the motionless lump of meat. Suddenly, his black screen flickered back to life, but the text wasn't blue. It was a jagged, pulsing purple.
‘CRITICAL ERROR: EXTERNAL ENTITY ELIMINATED BY NON-USER. CALCULATING REWARDS...’
"Marcus," Rian whispered, his voice trembling. "It’s doing something. The screen… it’s changing."
"What? What does it say?"
Rian stood up, his eyes locked on the purple text that began to rewrite his entire existence.
‘USER STATUS: NULL. CLASS: GLITCH. ABILITY UNLOCKED: THIEF OF VOIDS.’
"It says I’m a thief, Marcus. And the door… the door just unlocked."

Chapter 14: Echoes in the Sump
"Watch your footing, Rian. The limestone down here doesn't have collision physics enabled anymore; miss a step and you'll phase right through into the lower sub-basements," Sera whispered sharply, her flashlight beam cutting through the thick, damp gloom of the subterranean drainage tunnels.Rian caught his heel on a slick, moss-covered stone, his stomach dropping as the ground beneath his boot momentarily lost its density, turning into a patch of shifting, semi-transparent code before hardening again with a jarring crunch. He caught himself against the slimy brick wall, his breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps."I'm watching it," Rian hissed back, pulling his arm close to his chest to hide the faint, rhythmic pulse of violet light leaking from beneath his jacket cuff. "You don't need to remind me that my entire nervous system is currently acting as an open-source disaster area.""Keep moving," Kael growled from the he
Chapter 13: Underground Logistics
"Stop looking at the dirt, Rian. Look at the horizon. Or better yet, look at the sky," Jax barked, slamming his palm against the battered casing of the military-surband radio box until a burst of static cut through the whine of feedback."What am I supposed to be looking at? More smoking craters?" Rian asked, his voice tight as he hastily pulled his jacket sleeves down over his wrists. The violet residue beneath his skin felt like liquid fire, hot enough to sear through fabric if he didn't keep his hands clenched into white-knuckled fists."You're looking at a brand-new weather pattern," Kael said, stepping up beside Jax with a heavy tactical rifle slung across his chest. The old soldier pointed a scarred thumb toward the jagged, unnatural skyline of the sector's outer industrial rings. "Look closer, kid. Those aren't clouds rolling in from the north. That's a synchronized drone sweep. They're setting up a perimeter grid."
Chapter 12: The Blacklist
"Keep your hands out of your pockets, Rian," Kael snapped, his boots crunching loudly over the pixelated, smoking gravel of the ruined camp perimeter. "You look like you're hiding a grenade. And considering what you did to the mess hall, you practically are.""I'm just checking my pulse," Rian muttered, withdrawing his hands. He kept his fingers clenched tight, burying the faint, sickening violet glow of the residue pulsing beneath his skin. "Or what's left of it. My heart feels like it's skipping every other clock cycle.""Save the medical complaints for a medic who isn't currently missing an arm," Jax groaned, limping into view from behind a skewed shipping container. He dragged a battered military-surband radio box with his good hand, dropping it heavily onto a charred crate. "And stop twitching. You're making the terrain stutter just by standing near it."Rian looked down. The ground beneath his right boot was flicke
Chapter 11: Smoke and Static
"That's not a bug, Jax. That's a structural collapse," Rian muttered, staring at the gaping chasm where the mess hall used to stand. The edges of the crater didn't look like they had been blown up by explosives; they were smooth, pixelated drop-offs, flickering with a faint, violet luminescence that refused to die out."Call it whatever helps you sleep at night, kid," Kael growled, kicking aside a chunk of smoldering concrete that hummed like a high-voltage power line. "Half the perimeter wall is gone, three storage tents evaporated into thin air, and the terrain looks like someone took a cheese grater to reality. You want to tell me how a simple reality patch turns a logistics camp into a moonscape?""I didn't mean to delete the kitchen," Rian said defensively, his hands instinctively sliding deep into his jacket pockets. He pressed his fingers against his forearms, feeling the erratic, heat-generating pulse beneath his skin. The violet res
Chapter 10: Unforeseen Consequences
The roar of the system reformatting didn't fade; it collapsed into a deafening, static-filled silence. Rian slammed onto hard, cracked earth, gasping as the golden light finally receded from his veins, leaving him feeling like a hollowed-out husk."Ugh. My head feels like someone tried to defrag my brain with a rusty saw." Rian pushed himself up, his limbs trembling. "Did… did it work? Am I done?""You’re alive," a familiar, gravelly voice snapped. "Though, for a god-slayer, you look like a pile of wet laundry."Rian squinted through the dust. Kael stood over him, his armor dented and smoking. Behind him, the camp was a wreck."General? You’re alive. Thank god." Rian stumbled to his feet. "Wait—what happened to the camp? Why is everything on fire?""Nice of you to join us, 'Architect,'" Jax sneered, limping toward them with a bandaged arm. "The world didn't just reset because of your little tantrum. You brought the bugs out of the woodwork.""Bugs? I thought I reset the local gravity!
Chapter 9: The Glitch Awakens
The white void hummed with a sound like a thousand dying hard drives. Rian stood alone, his fingers hovering over the glowing, golden console that hovered in the nothingness."Okay. Okay, calm down," Rian muttered to the empty air, his voice sounding thin. "I just deleted a building. No big deal. Happens to the best of us, right?""Talking to yourself is the first sign of a corrupted kernel, Rian," the voice of the shard purred, vibrating inside his skull. "Or the first sign of becoming a god. Hard to tell the difference these days.""I don't want to be a god," Rian snapped, slapping a button on the console to toggle the 'VOID_RENDER' setting. "I want to be in my living room, eating leftovers, and complaining about the neighbors. Can you turn this off?""The installation is at 42 percent," the voice replied. "You can’t pull the plug now without bricking your own consciousness."Rian stumbled as the floor—or the lack of it—lurched violently. His vision fractured, sending jagged, neon-g
