A single mistake on an ice bridge turns a battle into a grave.

"Hold your positions until the lead wagon hits the center arch," Soren whispered, his eyes locked on the narrow pass below.

"My outlaws are getting restless," Varek muttered, crouching beside him behind a snowy boulder. "They want to spill iron blood right now."

"Tell them to wait," Soren commanded, his voice cold and steady. "If we hit them too early, their spell-knights will form a defensive ring around the transport case. We need the front and rear wagons trapped on the ice before we move."

Down in the steep gorge, the Iron Clan convoy moved slowly through the howling wind. Six heavy supply wagons, pulled by armored war beasts, picked their way across a long, natural bridge made of thick blue ice. Below the bridge lay a dark, bottomless chasm shrouded in freezing mist. Sitting on the middle wagon was a massive iron cage reinforced with glowing blue magic runes.

"Kaelen," Soren said, turning to the princess lying flat in the snow beside him. "You take four archers and target the draft beasts pulling the last wagon. As soon as the rear cart breaks down, the whole convoy stops."

"Understood," Kaelen replied, pulling her ice bowstring tight. "What about the spell-knights guarding the cage?"

"Varek and I will drop onto the central wagon from the high overhang," Soren said. "We secure the transport case before their commander can react."

"That bridge looks paper thin, kid," Varek grumbled, checking the heavy iron broadsword in his hands. "One wrong blast and the whole thing falls into the abyss."

"Then do not miss your targets," Soren said. "Now move."

The lead wagon creaked onto the center of the ice bridge. The iron-plated wheels slipped slightly on the slick surface, send loose chunks of ice tumbling into the dark canyon below.

"Loose!" Kaelen called out from her high perch.

Four glowing ice arrows cut through the gray blizzard, striking the rear war beasts directly in their shoulder joints. The heavy creatures let out sharp roars, collapsing onto the slippery bridge. The rear wagon skidded sideways, slamming hard into the stone walls of the canyon entrance and blocking the exit completely.

"Ambush!" the Iron Clan convoy commander shouted from the center wagon. "Form a defensive circle! Protect the cargo!"

"Now! Charge!" Varek roared, leaping off the high stone ledge and crashing down onto the front wagon with ten of his wild outlaws.

Soren dropped light as a feather beside him, his stolen steel blade drawn and ready. The iron wagon shook violently under their combined weight.

"Protect the cage!" two spell-knights yelled, raising their glowing iron staves to cast a wall of blue ice magic.

"Kaelen, drop their shields!" Soren shouted toward the cliffs.

Two precise ice arrows shattered the magic crystal at the tip of the first knight's staff. Soren darted forward in the confusion, stepping inside the second knight's guard and thrusting his blade straight into the weak leather joint beneath the man's throat plate.

"Left side clear!" Soren called out, kicking the falling spell-knight off the edge of the bridge. "Varek, secure the wagon wheels! Do not let them cut the beasts loose!"

"I am on it!" Varek yelled, sweeping his giant sword in a wide circle that drove back three armored guards at once. "Kid, you fight like you have led ten thousand sieges!"

"Focus on the battle!" Soren yelled back, parrying a sharp spear strike from an Iron Clan soldier. He twisted his hips, using the guard's momentum to throw the man over the low ice railing of the bridge.

The battle raged across the narrow bridge. Outlaws and iron guards clashed in close quarters, their heavy boots tearing up the frozen surface. Deep, high-pitched cracks began ringing through the ice beneath their feet.

"The bridge is giving out!" an outlaw yelled in panic. "The foundation is cracking!"

"Hold the line!" Soren ordered, his voice echoing over the roar of the wind. "Do not fall back until we have the case!"

Soren pushed his way through the chaos, reaching the heavy iron cage at the middle of the wagon. Through the thick iron bars, he saw the containment unit, a spherical glass globe glowing with unstable white light. Inside the globe floated a smooth, pitch-black dragon egg covered in faint silver veins.

"The crest," Soren muttered, reaching into his pocket. "Where is Kaelen?"

Kaelen dropped from the upper rocks, landing right beside the wagon with her ice daggers drawn. "I am here! The rear guards are cleared!"

"Hand me the Frostfall Crest!" Soren shouted over the noise of clashing steel. "We need to unlock the containment unit before the wagon slides off the edge!"

Before Kaelen could hand him the blue metal medallion, a tall, heavily armored figure stepped out from behind the transport cage. It was the convoy commander, his face covered by a dark iron mask and his hands gripping a heavy spiked warhammer.

"Outlaw trash!" the commander spat, his voice booming through his iron helmet. "You think Lord Vane will let you steal a royal asset?"

"Step away from the cage," Soren said, raising his sword. "You are outnumbered."

The commander looked around the bridge. Half of his spell-knights were dead, the outlaws had secured both ends of the pass, and the ice beneath his boots was cracking rapidly. A cruel, desperate laugh echoed from behind his mask.

"I may be outnumbered, but you will get nothing!" the commander screamed. He spun around, raising his heavy spiked warhammer high into the air, aiming the full force of the weapon straight down at the fragile glass containment unit holding the black egg.

"He is going to smash it!" Kaelen yelled, her eyes wide with horror. "Stop him!"

"No!" Soren roared.

With the egg about to be destroyed, Soren threw his body forward in a desperate leap across the slick, crumbling surface of the ice bridge. He ignored the aching pain in his lungs and the freezing air slicing his face.

He tackled the commander mid-swing, slamming his shoulder straight into the man's armored waist. Both men crashed hard onto the floor of the wagon, rolling across the slippery wood as the heavy warhammer flew wild.

The heavy head of the warhammer grazed the side of the glass containment unit.

A sharp, deafening snap echoed across the gorge.

The glass globe did not just crack; it shattered into thousands of tiny, glowing shards.

"Soren!" Kaelen cried out.

"Get back!" Soren yelled, pushing the heavy commander off his body as he scrambled toward the falling egg.

The moment the glass containment unit broke, the magical seal keeping the ancient dragon egg stable was completely destroyed. The dark, pitch-black egg froze in mid-air for a fraction of a second.

Then, a blinding shockwave of raw, unstable ancient dragon magic exploded outward from the black egg.

The blast hit the canyon like a mountain falling. A wave of pure black and gold energy shot in all directions, vaporizing the iron cage instantly and blowing both outlaws and iron guards flat onto their backs.

"Hold on to something!" Varek screamed, digging his heavy sword deep into the wooden wagon frame.

The massive magic explosion slammed directly down into the floor of the narrow bridge. The ancient blue ice, already weakened by the heavy fighting, could not sustain the force.

A terrifying crack, loud as a thunderclap, ripped across the center arch of the bridge.

"The bridge is breaking!" Kaelen shouted, sliding backward toward the chasm edge as the frozen floor beneath her split wide open.

A massive fissure tore straight down the center of the ice bridge, splitting the structure completely in two. Giant slabs of blue ice, heavy supply wagons, and armored bodies began tumbling downward into the dark, bottomless abyss below.

Soren reached out with his right hand, his fingers barely catching the edge of the falling black egg as the wooden wagon beneath him collapsed into splinters.

"Soren!" Kaelen screamed through the blinding cloud of black magical smoke, reaching her hand out toward him as the ground beneath them both began to tilt into the empty sky.
