“Mr. Narcissist.”

The caller was the guy she had just banished out of her mind… forcing herself not to dwell on his arrogance, his maddening confidence, or the strange calm his mere thought had brought to her mind.

For a second, Irene’s thoughts short-circuited and her brain refused to function, her body forgetting how to process something so surreal.

Then finally, the storm came crashing in on her… questions colliding over one another inside of her, clashing so violently that she couldn’t focus on a single one.

‘Why is he calling me?’

‘What does he want?’

‘How does he even know when to…’

And then, like a spark in the middle of nothingness, a memory resurfaced.

‘Before he left this morning, he did say he would check on me later.’

******“This… this motherf*cker is still smiling at a time like this?!”“Does that mean he doesn’t feel even the slightest shred of remorse for what he has done?!”“Hah! What else would you expect from an ex-convict?”“Why was trash like him even released from prison in the first place? He should’ve been left to rot!”Every face twisted with disgust, eyes blazing with self-righteous fury as the crowd fed on itself... each insult louder, uglier, faster, more vicious, and more confident than the last, heavily soaked in hatred and moral outrage. As for Charlotte and Ben… they froze, staring at Glenn as though they were seeing him for the first time… and what they thought they saw shattered something inside them.Charlotte’s body trembled violently as she lifted a shaking finger to point at him.“You…” Her voice scraped out of her throat, hoarse and brittle, as though it might snap at any moment. “Did you just… smile?”Her eyes widened, turning glassy and disbelieving.“Does th

******Ben’s eyes flashed with icy ferocity, thick veins bulging at his temples as his fury reignited.“You dare act ignorant with me?” the man roared, his voice hoarse and shaking with rage. The killing intent rolling off him surged violently, thick enough to make the people closest to him flinch. It looked as though he might truly lose control this time. And just like that, the fragile silence in the air shattered like a piece of glass, the street erupting again.“This bastard! How dare he act oblivious!”“Does he really think we’re fools?”“He’s pretending he doesn’t know anything? At a time like this?”“If he had nothing to do with it, why would he show up now?!”“Hmph! He thinks we are so stupid to believe it’s a coincidence!”“What a joke!”“Shameless!”The bystanders’ insults came fast and vicious, each one sharper than the last.Spite dripped from every word, stabbing toward Glenn like a barrage of blades meant to flay him alive.Their faces were twisted with hat

******Still at the front of the bungalow. The entire street had fallen into a strange, oppressive silence at this moment… the kind that pressed against the ears and made every breath feel louder than it should.Dozens of eyes were locked onto Glenn, unblinking, suspicious, and their mouths slightly opened in a daze.In fact, the air itself felt constricted right now, stretched so tight that even the slightest movement seemed capable of snapping it.And why was that? The hostility in the air had been so dense since Glenn’s arrival, to the extent that some people had instinctively taken half a step back. And it wasn’t just the atmosphere.Charlotte had gripped Glenn’s shirt so tightly upon recognizing him, her fingers digging and knotting into the fabric. She had shaken him again and again, her curses spilling out in a cracked, frantic stream.Every accusation she could think of had been hurled at him without pause. And Ben, on the other hand, had never bothered hiding the m

Just look at him. How could someone like this drag a child into such trouble?”“He must have offended some dangerous people and gone into hiding so he wouldn’t be found. Otherwise, why would anyo

******At this moment, the front of the bungalow ahead of Glenn was drowning in utter chaos.Voices overlapped, emotions collided, and the usually quiet neighborhood appeared to have been ripped apart by both panic and fear.“Why did they take my son?! I want my son back! They should send my son back home and take me instead!”A woman’s sobbing scream tore through everything else, sounding shrill, frantic, and devastated. She was on the ground, striking at the dirt and tiles with desperate hands, her hair disheveled, and her clothes rumpled as if she had fallen more than once. Her cries were both raw and unrestrained, the kind that came from a place far deeper than simple fear.People surrounded her at this moment, doing everything they could to hold her back, murmuring words of comfort and urging her to calm down. But she wouldn’t listen. She only sobbed even more bitterly and violently as if the world had already ended for her… as if the one thing anchoring her to life had
