Gina moved to the other side of the bed and sat down. Dane was now in the middle—both of them beside him. The energy in the room shifted. It was quiet, but charged.

Ella gently placed her hand on top of Dane’s.

“I don’t know the kind of life you or Butcher have lived,” she said, “but I can tell he means something to you. You wouldn’t be asking about him otherwise.”

Then Gina placed her hand on his other hand.

“She’s right,” Gina said softly. “We can feel it. You’re not just some outsider. You care.”

Without another word, the two of them stood up. Ella lowered herself onto his lap, facing him. Gina followed, sitting on his left leg. Dane looked between them, his heart thudding in his chest.

“What… what’s going on?” he asked. “Why does it feel like everything in the room just shifted?”

His heart was pounding.

Ella leaned in, eyes closed, and kissed him.

His first kiss.

When it broke, he turned to Gina—and she kissed him too. His mind was spinning.

I can’t hold back anymore, he thought.

Dane’s thoughts raced. What the hell is going on?He looked between Butcher and the Governor, heart pounding.“I can’t believe this,” he muttered under his breath. “This doesn’t make sense. I’m no governor—I’ve been working with the mafia all this time. We don’t have connections like this. I didn’t even see it coming. Not in a million years.”He turned to Butcher. “So, what does he want to give you? And how exactly does he plan to congratulate you?”Butcher smiled faintly, leaning forward. “It’s simple. He’s raising my rank. Not officially, of course, but in power and protection. I’m getting a green light to operate more freely.”Dane squinted. “What does that mean—operate more freely?”Butcher answered calmly. “You know how we’ve had limited immunity from the police—only in certain districts? There are still parts of the country where, if my men are caught holding the kind of drugs we move, they get arrested. Not jailed, maybe, but detained. Watched. Restricted.”The Governor spoke n

“Is that really what you want to talk about?” Dane said, rubbing his injured side. “Look, I don’t have time for this. And I’m hurt, okay? You didn’t even come yesterday to say sorry or ask how I’m doing after the mission. You just show up now, like it’s a joke.”He sighed. “Fine. You can leave my room. I don’t care what you want to say.”Jane didn’t argue. She stood up and walked out. Dane locked the door behind her.He muttered to himself, “What’s wrong with all these women? I don’t get them at all. I just got shot yesterday, and she’s coming here with things that don’t even matter right now.”Dane glanced around and then shrugged. “Well, maybe I should just grab my bike and go for a ride. I’ve got about eight grand on me. Might as well go somewhere and clear my head.”He headed to the bathroom, took a quick shower, and got dressed. He grabbed seven grand from his stash and pulled out one grand more, stuffing it into his pocket. As Dane stepped out of his room, he spotted Butcher wal

  • The Rich and the Reckless

The following day, Dane woke up feeling a bit better. He started doing some light stretches—not too intense, careful not to disturb the stitches from his injury. After a few moments, he stepped out of his room.Just then, he saw Kira approaching, carrying a tray of food. When she noticed him, she lowered her gaze slightly before walking over.“Is there any problem?” she asked softly.Dane smiled faintly. “Please take this,” he said, reaching out to accept the food. “Eat.”She was really beautiful. He found himself staring at her face, thinking, Why is it that ever since I joined the Mafia, I seem to be surrounded by beautiful women? He quickly shook his head, trying to push the thought away.“Thank you for this,” he said as he took the tray. Then, Dane turned and walked back to his room. Why did she bring me food? he wondered, but no answer came.He opened the container and saw a perfectly cooked steak. Picking up the knife, he sliced through it—it cut like butter. He took a bite and

As Dane stopped his bike by the side of the ship, the mafia guards stationed outside spotted him. Without hesitation, they ran toward him. He was bleeding, barely able to keep steady. They grabbed him quickly and helped him off the bike. Kira followed closely behind, holding a gun in one hand. They brought Dane inside the ship and straight into a room. One of their doctors treated him immediately. The bullets were removed, and his wounds were stitched up. He passed out from the blood loss.Hours later, Dane woke up. The first thing he saw was Kira sitting next to him, holding a bottle of water. She handed it to him.“You’re safe,” she said softly. He took a sip, then sat up slowly, wincing from the pain. “Did you get injured when they were shooting at us?” he asked.“No,” Kira replied. “I didn’t—because of you. You protected me.”Without saying more, Dane stood up, clutching his stitched side, and made his way to Butcher’s office. Kira followed behind. He knocked once. Butcher looked

More footsteps echoed from the stairwell.“What’s going on up there?” a voice called.“I thought you had it under control!” another shouted.A group of armed men emerged, squinting into the sunlight. They spotted Dane holding Leo at gunpoint and started to move forward.Without hesitation, Dane pressed the barrel harder against Leo’s temple.“Back off!” he shouted.Leo panicked, his pride crumbling beneath the threat of death.“Don’t come any closer!” he yelled at his own men. “I can’t die yet—MOVE BACK!”The men froze, uncertainty flashing across their faces.“Make way for them!” one of Leo’s senior guys barked.Reluctantly, they parted, creating a narrow corridor through their numbers. Dane forced Leo forward, Kira close behind, still holding her gun, eyes locked on the crowd. They moved steadily, step by step, down the stairs and into the dark, unfinished hallways of the building. The silence was deafening—no one dared speak. Every movement echoed. Finally, they exited the uncomple

Dane’s eyes scanned the rooftop, then darted to the staircase. He could hear faint voices and footsteps below—dozens of them. More than fifty men. There was no way he could make it out of here alive with Kira. Even if he escaped the rooftop, the ground floor would be a slaughterhouse. They’d never let him walk away, not with her. What do I do?Then, an idea sparked—reckless, dangerous… but it might be his only shot.Without hesitation, Dane dropped his gun to the floor.Leo’s eyes widened for a second in surprise—but then curled into a smug smile. “I knew you didn’t have the guts—”But before Leo could finish the thought, Dane charged at him.Leo’s grin vanished instantly. He raised his gun to fire.Bang! But it was too late—Dane had already anticipated where Leo would aim. He twisted his body mid-lunge, and the bullet tore into his left hand.
