Chapter 7: The Blood Spear

The glowing system window floated right in front of Kai's face, pulsing with a gentle blue light.

He lowered his iron pipe an inch, staring down at the tiny black pup shivering against his boots. The cub's small pink tongue was still lapping at the dry monster blood on Kai's leather shoes, looking up at him with intelligent, dark eyes.

"Tame," Kai said softly, making his decision. A helper beast was far more valuable than a single stat point.

A soft blue light flowed out from Kai's palm, wrapping around the pup's tiny body. The little wolf stopped shaking, letting out a soft sigh as the magic bound its soul directly to Kai's mind.

Kai reached down with one hand and lifted the heavy oak bookshelf effortlessly, tossing it aside. He scooped the small black pup into his arms. The creature was dangerously light, its little stomach flat from days of starving.

"You need food," Kai muttered, setting the cub down on a lab table.

He pulled out a chunk of raw meat he had saved from a mutated hound killed on the floor below. He dropped the red meat in front of the pup. Fang did not hesitate. The little wolf pounced on the meat, tearing into it with tiny, razor-sharp teeth.

As Fang swallowed the dark beast meat, a amazing change happened before Kai's eyes. The purple veins along the pup's skin began to glow brightly. Its skinny body swelled, muscles growing firmer under its thick black fur. Small, sharp bone-spikes popped out along its spine with soft clicking sounds, glinting like black iron in the dim light.

Fang let out a small, proud bark, its body now the size of a full-grown hunting dog. It jumped off the table, landing silently on the floor and rubbing its head against Kai's leg.

"Good boy," Kai said, patting the wolf's hard head. "Now let us finish clearing this building."

With Fang running silently by his side and his three zombie thralls marching behind, Kai swept through the fourth floor of the science building like a storm. He cleared out the chemistry classrooms and the faculty offices, searching every dark corner for beasts.

Whenever a mutated creature jumped out from the dark, Fang moved like a black shadow, biting into its ankles to hold it still while Kai delivered the killing strike. They worked together seamlessly, killing monsters in seconds.

Kai felt his chest burning with hot energy as his system bar filled up completely. A bright chime rang inside his head, sounding like a clear silver bell.

The broken iron pipe in Kai's hand began to heat up rapidly. The black and green venom light swirled around the metal, melting the rust and iron away. The bone fragments from the alpha zombie and the elite hound inside his spatial ring flew out, wrapping around the iron pipe like hot wax.

The metal twisted, grew longer, and sharpened. Within seconds, the simple iron pipe turned into a deadly, six-foot-long blood-bone spear. The shaft was made of hardened dark iron, while the tip was a jagged, eight-inch bone blade that glowed with a toxic green edge.

Kai gripped his new weapon, feeling its perfect weight and balance. He gave it a quick thrust forward, slicing through the air with a terrifying whistle. With this spear, his attack range and cutting power were three times higher.

"Now I am ready for Brandon," Kai said, his voice cold and sharp.

He turned around and headed down the stairs, sweeping through the main exit of the science building. The purple rain outside had slowed down to a thin drizzle, making the dark yard quiet and eerie. Fang trotted right beside his boots, his dark eyes scanning the dark fog for any danger.

They crossed the campus courtyard quickly, heading back toward the library stronghold. Kai felt confident. His body was stronger, his stats were higher, he had a loyal mutated wolf, and he held a deadly evolved weapon in his hands.

When he reached the small side hatch of the library fortress, he expected to see his zombie thralls open the door smoothly. But as he stepped closer, he noticed the heavy wooden barricades near the side entrance were slightly out of place.

The small iron door swung open suddenly with a sharp creak.

Chloe stepped out into the doorway, her clothes messy and her hair wild. Her face was deathly pale, covered in sweat and splatters of fresh red blood. In her shaking right hand, she gripped a small, bloody kitchen knife, her chest heaving as she breathed heavily.

She looked at Kai, then at the massive wolf standing at his side, her eyes wide with total panic.

"Kai!" Chloe gasped out, her voice trembling so hard she could barely speak. "Thank God you are back... We have a big problem..."

Returning to the library base, Kai finds Chloe waiting at the door in a panic, holding a bloody knife. One of Brandon's scouts has infiltrated their safe zone.
