Chapter 2: The Barrier Creaks
The rusted pipe felt like a lead weight in Satria’s grip as he moved toward the industrial district. The air in Sector 4 was thick, tasting of ozone and stagnant grease. As he approached the mouth of the alleyway leading to the old textile factory, a high-pitched hum—like the sound of a television left on a dead channel—vibrated in his teeth.
"Is that the rift?" Satria asked, his voice barely audible over the sudden, rhythmic thrumming of the air.
It is a fissure, yes, Tyr’s voice resonated in his mind, sharp and cold. The barrier between the physical world and the void is unraveling. If it spreads, everything within a three-block radius will become a feeding ground for anything drifting through.
"Feeding ground? You’re making this sound like a horror movie," Satria muttered, his eyes darting toward a distortion in the air. It looked like a ripple in water, hanging suspended between two brick walls. "How do I even seal a hole in reality?"
The system will guide your movements, but the heavy lifting is on you, Tyr replied. Position yourself before the epicenter. It’s leaking. Can you feel the cold?
Satria stepped closer. "Yeah, I feel it. It’s like standing inside a freezer."
That is the hunger of the void. Don’t let it settle in your bones. Start the stabilization sequence now.
A glowing blue prompt flickered into view: [System Command: Manual Sealing Protocol initiated. Energy consumption: 50% Stamina.]
Satria stared at the prompt, his heart hammering. "Fifty percent? Are you serious? I’m already beat from that thing earlier."
You don’t have the luxury of choice, Satria. If you fail, the rent isn’t the only thing you’ll be missing out on this month. You’ll be missing your existence.
"God, you’re morbid. Alright, fine. What do I do? Just shove my hands in there?"
Place your palms against the distortion. The system will bridge the gap. Focus on the feeling of the walls, not the void. You are anchoring the space back to the foundation of the city.
Satria stepped into the center of the shimmering ripple. The sensation was immediate and violent; it felt like a thousand needles pricking his skin simultaneously. He groaned, planting his feet firmly in the grime of the alley.
"This is… this is insane," Satria gritted out, his teeth clenched tight. "It feels like it’s pulling the air right out of my lungs!"
Hold it, Tyr commanded, the voice echoing with a sudden intensity. Don’t let go. If you break contact now, the feedback will snap your nervous system like a dry twig.
"Thanks for the warning!" Satria gasped, his body trembling as a blue, translucent web of light began to spider-web out from his fingers. "Is it working? It’s not looking any better!"
Persistence is key. You are fighting the pressure of an entire dimension. Keep your focus on the physical world. Think of the brick, the damp air, the smell of the city.
Satria squeezed his eyes shut. Brick. Concrete. Rain. The flickering streetlights. He shoved his intent into the rift, feeling his energy drain away with terrifying speed. It was as if a vacuum was attached to his very soul, siphoning off his vitality. His knees buckled, but he forced them to lock, his knuckles raw against the rough surface of the reality tear.
"I can’t… I don’t think I have enough left," Satria panted, sweat pouring down his face despite the freezing temperature of the rift.
You have exactly enough. You are the host. You are the seal.
"Easy for you to say," Satria snapped, though his voice was weak, trailing off into a wheeze. "I’m the one doing the heavy lifting here."
And you are doing admirably. Now, push. Finalize the seal.
With a guttural shout, Satria threw his remaining strength into the barrier. He felt a sharp click in his mind, like a heavy bolt sliding home. The violet hum subsided, silenced instantly. The shimmering air smoothed out, returning to the mundane reality of dirty brickwork and peeling paint.
Satria collapsed backward, hitting the wet asphalt with a dull thud. His vision swam. The interface flickered briefly, flashing a bright green: [Rift Sealed. Energy reserves critical.]
"Is it done?" he whispered, his chest heaving. "Tell me it’s done."
It is sealed, Tyr replied, the voice sounding satisfied, if detached. You’ve survived for now. But you are depleted. Your stamina is at zero.
Satria tried to lift his head, but his muscles felt like they were filled with wet sand. "I feel like I ran a marathon while holding my breath."
A small price to pay for preventing a localized apocalypse, Tyr noted. Rest for a moment. You’ve earned it.
Satria stared up at the grimy, smoke-choked sky, his breath hitching. "I’m done with heroics for the night. I just want to go home."
You aren't going anywhere yet. Look at the wall, Satria. To your left.
Satria forced his head to turn, his neck muscles protesting. Scratched into the brickwork, just where the rift had been most intense, was a symbol—a jagged, interlocking pattern that seemed to hurt his eyes if he stared at it for too long. It burned with a faint, residual heat.
"What is that? A tag?" Satria asked, frowning.
That is a marker. A signature left by the entity that opened this tear, Tyr said, its tone shifting into something more serious. It’s a warning, Satria. They know someone intervened.
Satria felt a shiver trace its way down his spine. "They? How many of these things are out there?"
Enough to turn this city into a graveyard if you don’t get stronger, Tyr replied. Get up. You need to document this. That symbol is a piece of evidence that this isn't just random luck.
Satria groaned, dragging himself into a sitting position. "I’m exhausted, Tyr. I really, really don't want to play detective right now."
The shadows don't care about your sleep schedule, Tyr reminded him. Take a photo, record the coordinates, and then, and only then, can you go home.
Satria reached into his pocket, his fingers fumbling as he pulled out his cheap, cracked smartphone. He leveled the lens at the glowing, jagged mark on the wall. "If I get killed because of this symbol, I’m going to be extremely annoyed."
If you get killed, you won't be around to be annoyed, Tyr countered dryly.
Satria snapped the photo, the flash illuminating the damp alleyway for a split second. "Done. Can I go now?"
Yes. Go. Sleep, eat, recover. Tomorrow, we start your actual training. The peace you knew yesterday is gone, Satria. Welcome to the real world.
Satria pocketed the phone, his body aching with every movement as he hauled himself to his feet. He looked at the sealed alleyway once more, then turned his back on it, walking slowly toward the distant, flickering lights of his neighborhood, the weight of a hidden war pressing down on his shoulders.

Chapter 10: Community TiesThe smell of charred, sulfurous ozone clung to the walls of the apartment like a second skin. Satria stood in the center of his living room, staring at the ruin of his front door. The wood was a splintered mess, blackened and warped by unnatural heat, while the surrounding wallpaper peeled away in long, gray curls."It looks like a war zone," Camila said, her voice dropping as she stepped over the threshold. She was carrying a heavy plastic crate filled with cleaning supplies and rolls of industrial tape. "A gas leak doesn't do this, Satria. You know that, right?"Satria rubbed the back of his neck, feeling the persistent, phantom itch of the shadow-insects’ claws. "I know, Cam. I just... I needed to tell them something. I couldn't exactly tell the building manager that a swarm of shadow-bugs tried to eat my floorboards."Camila set the crate down with a heavy thud. She looked at him, her eyes searching his face with that familiar, clinical intensity. "You l

Chapter 9: Defending HomeThe silence that followed the collapse of the rift was not a peaceful one. It was heavy, ringing with the shock of the onlookers and the sharp, jagged breaths tearing from Satria’s chest. Camila stood frozen by the streetlamp, her medical bag dangling limply from her hand. The expression on her face—that blend of horror, confusion, and a burgeoning, terrifying understanding—burned deeper than the friction-scorched skin of his palms."Satria?" she whispered, her voice barely audible over the idling engine of a nearby delivery truck. "What was that? What did you just do?"Satria scrambled to his feet, ignoring the throbbing pain in his joints. "I can’t explain it, Cam! Just—please, go home! Get off the street!""Go home? You just shoved a woman out of the way of a nightmare and then... then you pulled the sky shut!" She took a step toward him, her nurse’s pragmatism warring with the primal fear in her eyes. "You’re bleeding. Your hands are literally smoking, Sa

Chapter 8: A Day of RestThe morning sun bled through the grimy slats of Satria’s window, casting harsh, linear shadows across his bedroom floor. He sat on the edge of his bed, the heavy silence of the room pressing against his ears. The golden light in his eyes had faded, replaced by the mundane, tired look of a guy who had been awake for far too long. You seem tense, Satria, Tyr noted, the voice echoing in his mind with a low, vibrating frequency. Your resting heart rate is still elevated."It’s morning, Tyr," Satria muttered, rubbing his face with both hands. "People are waking up. The city is starting to move. I have to go out there and pretend I’m just a guy who didn't spend his night fighting shadow-stalkers in a market."Pretending is a social necessity, I suppose. It keeps the variables stable."It keeps me sane," Satria corrected. He stood up, his body feeling like a well-oiled machine, despite the lack of sleep. He pulled his old hoodie over his head, carefully hiding the du

Chapter 7: The Crystal's SecretThe door to Satria’s room clicked shut, the sound echoing like a gunshot in the cramped space. He didn't turn on the lights. He couldn't risk the neighbors seeing the residual, pulsing violet glow bleeding through his jacket pocket. He collapsed into his sagging armchair, his chest heaving as he fumbled for the crystal."That wasn't just a shadow, was it?" Satria panted, his voice trembling in the dark. No, Tyr replied, its voice resonating with a rare, jagged edge. That was a watcher. And you have drawn their gaze."A watcher? What, like the police? A government spook?"Hardly. The government is far too slow and entirely too blind to notice a Class-C breach, Tyr said, its tone chillingly dismissive. This was someone—or something—from the other side of the veil. They are interested in the harvest.Satria pulled the crystal from his pocket. It felt like a live coal, radiating a heat that soaked through his skin and into his marrow. "The harvest? You mean

Chapter 6: Shadows in the MarketThe air in the alley had grown heavy, thick with a static charge that made the hair on Satria’s arms stand up. Maya, Rian, and Budi were staring at him, their expressions caught somewhere between bewilderment and raw fear."Satria, answer us," Maya said, her voice dropping to a low, intense frequency. "How did you do that? You moved like you weren't even in the same room as the rest of us.""I..." There was a hint of warning now. The corruption in the sewers is coalescing. You cannot hold this front alone."I’m not trying to be a one-man army, Tyr," Satria muttered, wiping a streak of grime from his forehead. "But I can’t leave the neighborhood defenseless. If those things come back and I’m on the other side of town, who’s going to stop them? Pak Wira?"You’re thinking of recruiting, Tyr noted. A dangerous variable.
