Chapter 1: The First Quest

The humid night air clung to Satria’s skin like a damp towel. He adjusted his backpack, the strap digging into his shoulder as he navigated the labyrinthine alleyways of his neighborhood. It was barely past midnight, and the streetlights flickered with an ominous, buzzing rhythm.

"Come on, just a few more blocks," he muttered to himself, his voice sounding thin against the silence of the city.

He turned a corner, expecting the familiar sight of the local grocery stall, but stopped dead. A few yards ahead, a man in a dark hoodie had a younger kid pinned against the brick wall. The kid’s bag was already on the ground, spilling notebooks into a shallow puddle.

"Hey! What the hell do you think you’re doing?" Satria shouted, his voice cracking slightly.

The mugger spun around. Beneath the brim of his hood, his face was obscured, but his eyes caught the moonlight with a sickly, unnatural sheen.

"Beat it, kid. This ain't your business," the mugger growled. His voice sounded like gravel grinding against metal.

"You're robbing a kid, man. Move away from him," Satria said, stepping forward. He didn't think; he just acted. He reached out and grabbed a discarded, rusted iron pipe lying near a pile of trash. It felt heavy and cold in his hand.

"Are you serious? You think that stick makes you a hero?" the mugger laughed. It wasn't a human sound. It was jagged, disjointed.

"I'm not a hero. I'm just sick of people like you," Satria replied.

"You have no idea what you're dealing with, boy," the mugger hissed.

"Yeah, whatever. Walk away, or I’m going to make you regret it," Satria retorted.

The mugger didn't walk away. Instead, he lunged. His movement was unnatural—a blurred streak of motion that defied physics. Satria swung the pipe instinctively. The metal connected with the mugger’s side, but instead of the thud of flesh, there was a strange, hollow clack, like hitting dry wood.

The mugger didn't even stumble. He backhanded Satria with enough force to send him sprawling into the mud.

"You're pathetic," the mugger sneered, looming over him.

Satria gasped, struggling to catch his breath. His head spun. Is this it? Am I dying in a back alley over a backpack?

Suddenly, a shimmering blue interface flickered into existence directly in his field of vision.

[System Initialized.]

[Guardian Protocol: Active.]

[Target Identified: Low-Level Shadow Shade.]

[Objective: Neutralize the anomaly.]

Satria blinked rapidly, shaking his head. "What the... did I hit my head that hard?"

A voice, calm and melodic, echoed inside his skull. Focus, Satria. That thing isn't human. If you don't fight back, it’s going to feast on your exhaustion.

"Who said that? Where are you?" Satria scrambled backward, his heart hammering against his ribs.

I am Tyr. Your guide. And if you keep sitting there, you’re going to be a corpse by morning, the voice replied.

"A guide? A ghost? I'm losing it. I've finally lost it," Satria muttered, his hand gripping the pipe until his knuckles turned white.

You aren't insane. You're just awakening. Swing the pipe, Satria. Aim for the core. The center of his chest, Tyr commanded.

The Shade lunged again, its fingers elongating into jagged claws.

"Fine! If I'm dreaming, I might as well wake up!" Satria shouted. He surged upward, using his momentum to swing the pipe in a wide, desperate arc.

Aim for the glow, you idiot!

Satria shifted his grip. He saw it—a faint, pulsing purple light embedded in the center of the creature’s chest, barely visible beneath the fabric of the hood. He lunged forward, ignoring the burning sensation in his lungs.

The pipe whistled through the air and slammed squarely into the glowing point.

The Shade let out a shriek that sounded like a thousand voices crying out at once. It recoiled, its form beginning to dissipate into wisps of black smoke.

"Stay down!" Satria yelled, swinging the pipe again and again. Each strike caused the creature to unravel further. Finally, with a final, sickening pop, the Shade shattered into a cloud of darkness that vanished into the night air.

Satria collapsed to the ground, his chest heaving. The pipe clattered onto the concrete.

"Is it... is it over?" he panted.

[Objective Complete.]

[Host successfully neutralized Rogue Entity.]

[Reward: +1 Strength point awarded.]

Satria felt a strange, warm sensation bloom in his arms and chest, as if his muscles were being knitted back together with liquid fire. The fatigue that had plagued him seconds ago vanished, replaced by a sharp, tingling vitality.

"What was that? What just happened to me?" Satria whispered, staring at his trembling hands.

That was your first step into a larger world, Tyr responded. You’re stronger now, but that was just the beginning. The shadows are restless tonight.

"What do you mean 'the beginning'? I just want to go home and sleep," Satria groaned, standing up. He looked at the street, which suddenly seemed far more dangerous than it had ten minutes ago.

Sleep is a luxury you can no longer afford. Look, Tyr said.

The blue interface pulsed, and a new, bold text box appeared, hovering in the air like a neon sign.

[New Quest: Containment Breach.]

[Location: Old Textile Factory, Sector 4.]

[Difficulty: Moderate.]

[Objective: Locate and seal the rift currently leaking Shades into the city.]

[Failure Penalty: Permanent soul-severing.]

Satria stared at the words, his blood turning cold. "Are you kidding me? A rift? I don't even know how to fight! I just got lucky with a piece of pipe!"

Luck favors the prepared, Satria. And you are the only one who can see the rift. If you don't go, more people will die tonight. Are you going to be the guy who stood by, or the guy who stopped it?

Satria looked at the empty alleyway, then at the flickering light of the streetlamp down the road. The sense of responsibility, heavy and unwanted, settled onto his shoulders.

"If I go... will you tell me what’s actually going on?" Satria asked, his voice barely a whisper.

Once you survive the night, I will explain everything, Tyr promised.

Satria picked up the rusted pipe, his knuckles white. He looked toward the direction of the old factory, his jaw set in a grim line.

"Fine. But if I die, I'm haunting you," Satria grumbled.

If you die, there will be nothing left to haunt me with, Tyr replied, a hint of amusement coloring the voice.

Satria took a deep breath, checked his surroundings, and started walking toward the darkness of Sector 4. The night had only just begun.

Satria stood in the center of his living room, staring at the ruin of his front door. The wood was a splintered mess, blackened and warped by unnatural heat, while the surrounding wallpaper peeled away in long, gray curls."It looks like a war zone," Camila said, her voice dropping as she stepped over the threshold. She was carrying a heavy plastic crate filled with cleaning supplies and rolls of industrial tape. "A gas leak doesn't do this, Satria. You know that, right?"Satria rubbed the back of his neck, feeling the persistent, phantom itch of the shadow-insects’ claws. "I know, Cam. I just... I needed to tell them something. I couldn't exactly tell the building manager that a swarm of shadow-bugs tried to eat my floorboards."Camila set the crate down with a heavy thud. She looked at him, her eyes searching his face with that familiar, clinical intensity. "You l

A government spook?"Hardly. The government is far too slow and entirely too blind to notice a Class-C breach, Tyr said, its tone chillingly dismissive. It felt like a live coal, radiating a heat that soaked through his skin and into his marrow. "The harvest? You mean

Satria stood over it, the heavy pipe resting against his thigh, his lungs burning with each labored breath. You’re pushing yourself to the brink, Satria, Tyr’s voice echoed, devoid of its usual clinical detachment. There was a hint of warning now. The corruption in the sewers is coalescing. You cannot hold this front alone."I’m not trying to be a one-man army, Tyr," Satria muttered, wiping a streak of grime from his forehead. "But I can’t leave the neighborhood defenseless.
