“Yes, let's surprise Mommy!” Brandon said with a faint smile.
The drive back to the suburbs was really calm. Maggie watched the trees go by and hummed a tune to herself. When Brandon pulled the car into the driveway of their house, he took a slow breath and got ready to start decorating as soon as they went inside. Brandon unlocked the door and held Maggie's hand and when the door opened they both stopped and stared. The front hallway and living room were looking amazing. There were banners that said "HAPPY BIRTHDAY!" in gold letters and lots of balloons floating around. The walls had party decorations on them. There was a big table in the middle of the room with bright tablecloths on it. Maggie was so surprised and happy. She let go of Brandon's hand as she gasped with her eyes shining with excitement. "Oh my gosh, Daddy! Look!" Maggie exclaimed, jumping up and down. "Mommy did it! Mommy came home early. She made the house look pretty for me! It's a surprise party! She really didn't forget my birthday!" Brandon was also really surprised. He stared at the decorations and felt a little better. After what happened at the hospital he thought Lyra would not care about Maggie's birthday. It seemed like she actually put in some effort. Watching Maggie run around and laugh made Brandon feel peaceful. ‘Maybe,’ he thought, ‘maybe Lyra finally understands how sick Maggie is. At least she is trying to do something for our child.’ The happy moment did not last long. "Hey! Don't touch that! Those are my balloons!" a mean voice said from upstairs. “Let go of the balloon.” Brandon's smile disappeared when he looked up. Leo, Jake's son, was running down the stairs. He was wearing a party hat as he snatched the balloon from Maggie's hand. "This is my party! Go away!" Before Brandon could do anything, Lyra's and Brandon’s bedroom door opened. Jake came out first fixing his shirt, then Lyra came out laughing at something Jake said. They looked really comfortable together. Brandon’s fists trembled violently as anger surged through him. Lyra had brought these people into their house while Maggie was in the hospital. They came out of the bedroom together. In his house. In the bedroom where they used to sleep together. Had they already moved in together? Had they started living as a family before he even signed the divorce papers? "Lyra," Brandon said, his voice shaking with rage. "What is going on here?" Lyra stopped laughing when she saw Brandon and Maggie. Her expression immediately hardened with irritation. Jake immediately hurried down the stairs with an apologetic expression on his face, raising both hands as if trying to calm the situation before it exploded. “Brandon, please don’t misunderstand what’s happening here,” Jake said softly, his voice sounding sincere even though there was something fake beneath it. “Tomorrow is Leo’s birthday, and our apartment suddenly started having serious problems with the water pipes.” He let out a tired sigh before continuing. “Lyra knew how stressed we were, so she kindly invited us to stay here for a few days until things got fixed.” Jake glanced at Brandon with an awkward smile filled with false guilt. “We honestly didn’t mean to upset you. If our presence here makes you uncomfortable, just say the word and I’ll leave immediately with Leo. The last thing we want is to cause problems between you and Lyra.” Just then, Lyra slowly walked downstairs and stopped beside Jake, her expression immediately hardened the moment she looked at Brandon. “Why you've to leave Jake?” Lyra asked coldly. “This house belongs to me too. My name is on the ownership papers, and I helped pay for this place.” She crossed her arms firmly over her chest. “I have every right to invite my friends into my home, and I don’t need anyone's permission to help people I care about.” While Lyra was speaking, Leo quietly walked over to her side and tightly grabbed her hand with a satisfied smile on his face. Then he looked directly at Maggie. It almost felt as if he was silently telling her, “She belongs to me now, not you.” Maggie stood quietly near the couch, frozen in place. Her small face had turned pale, and tears slowly filled her big brown eyes as she struggled not to cry. At that moment, Maggie finally understood the truth. None of this had been for her. Not the golden banners. Not the balloons. Not the decorations filling the house. Even the surprise party she had gotten so excited about… was never meant for her. For the first time in her life, Maggie felt like she no longer belonged in her own home. Brandon saw the tears gathering in Maggie’s eyes, and something inside him finally snapped. He took a few steps forward until he was standing directly in front of Lyra, his entire body trembling with anger. “Have you completely lost your mind, Lyra?” Brandon demanded, his voice shaking as he pointed toward the birthday decorations hanging from the ceiling. “Do you even remember that tomorrow is Maggie’s birthday too? She’s your daughter!” His chest rose and fell heavily as years of pain and frustration poured out of him. “You promised her that you’d spend the day with her. You promised you wouldn’t work. You promised you’d be there for her birthday.” His eyes burned with disbelief. “So how can you stand here and break that promise so easily just to prioritize someone else’s child over your own daughter?”Latest Chapter
I LOVE YOU DADDY!
“You'll regret this!” Brandon realized then that there was no time left to argue with her anymore.Maggie’s breathing was growing weaker in his arms.Without another word, he opened the car door and stepped out onto the side of the highway while holding Maggie tightly against his chest. The moment both of them were outside, Lyra slammed the door shut and sped away without looking back.Brandon was alone on the side of the road. The sun was beating down on him. Cars were driving by fast. No one stopped to help.Brandon looked down at Maggie in terror. She was growing weaker with every passing second, her tiny body trembled faintly in his arms, and each breath she took sounded softer than the last.“Daddy…” Maggie whispered weakly, her small fingers barely gripping his shirt.“I’m here, baby,” Brandon replied immediately, his voice breaking as he tightened his hold around her fragile body. “Daddy’s right here. I’m going to get you to the hospital, okay? Just hold on a little longer for
GET OUT OF MY CAR
“You planned all of this, didn’t you?” Lyra snapped furiously, her voice trembling with anger and disbelief. “You knew Jake and Leo were staying at the house. You knew how important today was for my business, so you used Maggie to drag me away from Leo’s party.”Her eyes burned with disgust as she stared at Brandon.“You told her to pretend to be sick because you couldn’t stand seeing me happy with someone else.” Her voice turned colder with every word. “You’re so pathetic that you’d even use your own daughter just to manipulate me.”Brandon stared at Lyra in complete disbelief, his bloodshot eyes wide with shock and heartbreak. For seven years, he had loved this woman with everything he had, but at that moment, as he looked into her cold eyes while their daughter struggled to breathe in his arms, a chilling realization settled deep inside his heart. The woman standing in front of him was no longer the Lyra he thought he knew.“She’s fighting for her life, Lyra,” Brandon said hoarsely
DON'T LET HER DIE!
“I... I’m working on it right now,” Jake said quietly as he glanced nervously toward the living room where Leo was playing. “The papers are ready. Lyra already has them, and her financial team is reviewing the accounts this morning. She’s supposed to sign everything this afternoon. Just give me a few more hours… please.”A dark chuckle echoed from the other end of the line.“We don’t want your excuses or your hours, Jake,” the voice replied coldly. “And don’t insult us by pretending you still have control of the situation. We already know you’ve been lying.”The man paused briefly before his tone turned even darker.“If we don’t get our money by the end of today, we’ll come to your house ourselves. We’ll break every bone in your body, strip you for whatever organs still have value, and then we’ll take your son as interest on your debt.”A chilling silence followed. “Do you understand me now, Jake?”“No… please don’t touch my son,” Jake begged desperately, his voice trembling with fear
AN EMERGENCY?
“Happy Birthday, Maggie!” The Mickey Mouse mascot cheered warmly as he walked toward her and handed her a beautiful bouquet of roses. The bright morning sun bathed the amusement park in warm golden light, making everything around it look cheerful and alive.Colourful music drifted from the nearby carousel while children ran across the pathways holding giant sticks of pink cotton candy, laughing and pointing excitedly toward the rollercoasters towering above them. But Maggie wasn’t looking at any of the rides. She sat quietly on a bench beside Brandon, her small hands resting weakly in her lap while her favorite teddy bear leaned silently against her chest.Unlike usual, she wasn’t hugging it tightly. Her face looked frighteningly pale beneath the sunlight, almost translucent, and her lips carried a faint bluish tint.Brandon knelt down in front of her, his eyes filled with worry as he carefully studied her pale little face. Earlier, he had bought her a balloon, bunny shaped cotton can
THE SCAM BEHIND THE SMILE
"Yes! Thank you Mommy!" A big smile came back to Maggie's face.Brandon looked at his wife one last time. He felt really disappointed in Lyra. She was like a stranger who didn't deserve to be called a mom.He took Maggie's hand and turned toward the front door. He didn't look at the balloons or the gold banners."Let's go, Maggie," Brandon said, his voice smooth and empty. As he gripped the door handle he looked back at Lyra. She was standing close to Jake again."Don't worry, Lyra," Brandon stated quietly, his voice cold enough to make the room feel colder. "Maggie and I are leaving now. From this moment on, neither of us will ever stand in the way of the life you clearly want."His eyes lingered on Jake standing beside her before returning to Lyra."But remember one thing," Brandon continued. "You promised Maggie that you'd come see her tomorrow. So keep your promise for once."His hand tightened around Maggie’s small fingers."Because after tomorrow… Neither she nor I will ask anyt
WHY DO I HAVE TO LEAVE?
“Mommy,” Maggie said, her voice trembling softly. “This is my home. It’s not Leo’s house. Why do I have to leave? Why do I have to celebrate my birthday somewhere else?”She stood near the edge of the decorated carpet, clutching her teddy bear tightly against her chest. Her tiny knuckles had turned white from how hard she was holding it. Slowly, her tearful eyes moved from the golden birthday banners to the bright blue balloon Leo had snatched from her earlier… before finally lifting toward her mother. The question was simple and painfully innocent. The moment Maggie spoke, Leo’s eyes widened in shock. He immediately let go of Lyra’s hand and stumbled back as tears burst from his eyes. Covering his face with both hands, he broke into loud sobs, his small shoulders shaking violently while he stomped his feet against the floor.“See, Daddy?! She’s bullying me!” Leo cried through his tears, his small shoulders shaking violently. “She’s only being mean to me because I don’t have a mommy!
