Ethan did not move.

The three figures behind the man in the suit stood in silence. From a few meters away, their body shapes were not much different from ordinary humans. They wore simple, dark clothing with no identification tags or emblems of any kind.

Only their eyes could not be hidden.

A greenish light pulsed within each of their irises.

Ethan swallowed hard.

"What are they?"

The man in the suit did not answer.

Instead, Elena pulled Ethan backward.

Ethan did not move. The three figures behind the man in the suit stood in silence. From a few meters away, their body shapes were not much different from ordinary humans. They wore simple, dark clothing with no identification tags or emblems of any kind.Only their eyes could not be hidden.A greenish light pulsed within each of their irises.Ethan swallowed hard."What are they?"The man in the suit did not answer.Instead, Elena pulled Ethan backward."Don't stare into their eyes for too long.""I already saw them.""I know."One of the figures moved. Not by walking. In an instant, it was already a few steps closer.Ethan stepped back on reflex. His foot hit the leg of the stone table. The bracelet on his wrist vibrated again. The figure stopped. Its gaze fell upon the object."He is already bound."Its voice was heavy, sounding as if it came from far away. The man in the suit nodded."That's why we can't kill him."Ethan turned to Elena."Bound to what?""Not now.""If not now, whe

  • White Light

Elena unlocked the narrow door beneath the stairs. The hinges groaned softly as the wooden panel shifted, revealing a set of stone steps descending into darkness. There were no lights—only the smell of damp earth and the cold air rising from below."Go down," Elena whispered.Ethan stared at the staircase."And you?""Right behind you."The sound of a vehicle reached them from outside the building. The front door opened.Someone stepped inside.Ethan didn't argue further. He slipped the old key into his pocket and started down. Elena followed right behind, pulling the door shut without a sound. They descended about twenty steps before reaching a narrow corridor. To their right, old pipes ran along the wall, partially rusted, while the stone floor was covered in a thin layer of puddles. Elena walked without hesitation, as if she knew the place by heart."How long have you known about this spot?""Since I was a child.""Were you ever here with my father?"Elena stopped. She turned her h

Ethan didn't stop until he was two blocks past his uncle's house. The drizzle was growing heavier. His thin jacket was beginning to absorb water, his hair clung to his forehead, and his right shoe had been soaked since he jumped over a puddle at the first corner. He kept walking until he found a bus stop sheltered by an awning.Only there did he take out his phone. The message was still there. If your uncle told you about the Old Library, it means we don't have much time.Below it was the exact same address.Blackridge Old Library — 05.30.Ethan typed a reply.Who are you?The message sent.No reply came.He tried calling the number. The call wouldn't connect. There was no ringing tone, as if the number wasn't even registered.Ethan put his phone away.A night bus appeared from the end of the street. He boarded it and chose the very back row. There weren't many passen

Uncle Ethan was still standing in the doorway.A light drizzle was starting to fall again. The droplets fell from the edge of the roof and shattered against the courtyard stones. Ethan waited for an answer, but the man only stared at the black button in his hand."Come inside," he said finally."I want answers.""Inside.""I've gone too long without anything except silence."Uncle Ethan rubbed his face. "If you want to hear everything, don't stand outside like that."He turned around.Ethan followed. As soon as the back door closed, the cold air from the courtyard was cut off. His uncle took a chair from the dining table and sat down. The old photograph was still in his hand.Ethan stood across the table."Where do I start?"His uncle stared at the photograph."From the night your father left you in my care."Ethan didn't move."He came alone?""No.""Who was with him?"Uncle Ethan shook his head."I never saw the face of the person who brought you."That answer made Ethan pull out a

  • Who was that man?

The table didn't actually hold the door back.Ethan knew that. The wooden plank was too short, and the floor was slightly slanted. If someone pushed from the outside with enough force, the table would only slide a few centimeters.Yet, he left it there anyway. He sat on the edge of the bed, staring at the closed door. The conversation with his uncle earlier kept replaying in fragments.Tomorrow morning, don't let Ethan go to campus.Who was that man?Why would someone come to their house just to deliver a message about him?Ethan opened his bag and pulled out the letter he had received at the café. He read it once more under the desk lamp.If you still want to find answers about your parents, stop following Adrian Huxley. He isn't looking for the truth. He's looking for something much more dangerous. The name Adrian Huxley had appeared too many times in one day.Seminar.The Old Library. The conversation he had overheard by accident. The man in the gray suit. And now, someone warning

  • Outside

Ethan put the cup down slowly. The drawing on the glass was no larger than the palm of a hand. The lines were drawn in a single swipe of a finger, still wet in some places. The condensation around it hadn't had time to dry yet, indicating that the symbol had been made not long ago.He turned to look outside. The sidewalk was starting to empty out. Streetlights cast a yellowish glow onto the still-damp asphalt. A food delivery rider sped past on a motorcycle without slowing down. Across the street at the bus stop, two passengers were waiting for the night bus.No one was paying attention to the café."Ethan."Megan's voice came from the direction of the register."Have the chairs on the terrace been brought inside?""Not yet.""Then please clear those first. I'm going to close the cash register.""Alright."Ethan pulled his gaze away from the window. He pushed the front door open and went out, carrying the two folding chairs usually placed on the terrace. The night air felt colder afte
