Around Doctor Han, the other physicians straightened their backs instinctively, as though my mere presence was an insult to them.
One of them scoffed loudly, making no effort to lower his voice.
“Who exactly is this man supposed to be?” he asked, looking me up and down with obvious irritation.
“I heard he’s the Davenport family’s live-in son-in-law,” someone in the crowd replied in a mocking but clearly audible tone.
“Oh… that one?” another voice sneered from somewhere behind the guests. “The unemployed one who eats off his wife’s family?”
The murmurs spread quickly, moving through the hall.
Meanwhile, Greg was still sprawled on the floor, gasping for air as though every breath was being squeezed out of him by invisible hands.
His fingers clawed desperately at his chest, digging into his suit as if he could physically tear away the pain that gripped him.
His mother suddenly rushed toward me, her heels striking the floor sharply with every furious step.
Her face was twisted with fear and anger, and her voice trembled as she pointed a shaking finger at me.
“If you are lying,” she said through clenched teeth, “I swear I will make sure you regret it for the rest of your life.”
“I am not lying,” I replied calmly, meeting her eyes without the slightest hint of fear.
My composure only seemed to infuriate her further.
Doctor Han let out a short, dry laugh that carried more scorn than amusement. “So let me understand this properly,” he said, folding his arms across his chest.
“You claim that his lungs are not the issue. You insist that the medication we administered will not help. And now you are boldly announcing that you can cure him?”
“Yes,” I answered without hesitation.
“And how exactly do you intend to accomplish that?” he demanded sharply for the second time.
I glanced briefly at Greg, noting the worsening pallor of his face, before answering in an even tone.
“I have said this before, and I won't say it again. All I need,” I said, “is a glass of cold water and a pinch of salt.”
For one long second, silence fell over the entire hall.
Then the room erupted in explosive laughter.
“Was he really serious about this the first time?” someone shouted incredulously.
“Perhaps we should bring him some sugar too!”
Several people began clapping mockingly, as though I had just delivered the punchline of a poorly executed joke.
Even the physicians standing beside Doctor Han shook their heads openly.
“This is exactly why untrained individuals should not interfere in medical emergencies,” one of them said loudly.
“He’s exploiting this crisis for attention,” another added dismissively.
Greg’s father stepped forward, his face flushed with anger and humiliation.
“Security!” he barked, his voice echoing sharply against the high ceiling. “Remove him from this hall immediately before he turns this into a circus.”
Two uniformed security men stationed near the entrance began moving toward me without hesitation.
Across the room, Sonia’s parents looked mortified. Her mother pressed a trembling hand against her forehead.
“This is utterly humiliating,” she muttered bitterly. “Absolutely humiliating.”
Her father turned toward Doctor Han, forcing a strained smile onto his face. “Doctor Han, please ignore him and continue your work. He has been living under my roof, eating free meals, and now he suddenly believes he understands medicine better than trained professionals.”
The laughter that followed was louder this time, more confident.
I did not move.
I did not react.
I simply stood where I was, my expression remained calm.
“Bring me the water,” I repeated quietly.
That statement triggered another wave of ridicule.
“You see?” one guest remarked loudly. “This is what happens when uneducated people oversimplify everything.”
“I heard he dropped out of school because he couldn’t even pass basic examinations,” another added eagerly.
Doctor Han folded his arms again and looked at me with open irritation. “Yes, I believe I heard something similar,” he said thoughtfully. “A man with a record of academic failure, poor grades, no credentials, no qualifications.”
He tilted his head slightly. “And yet here you are, standing before seasoned professionals, claiming insight we somehow lack.”
His assistants smirked in agreement.
Sonia stood a few steps away, her hands clenched tightly at her sides. I could see the storm of emotions in her eyes. I'll
It was shame.
“Leonard…” she whispered softly, her voice barely audible above the murmurs.
Her mother spun toward her immediately. “Do not defend him!”
“I’m not trying to—” Sonia began, but her mother cut her off sharply.
“Then stay quiet,” she snapped. “This is not his place. And it is certainly not your place to encourage this embarrassment.”
The security guards had now stopped only a few feet away from me, waiting for the final command.
I shifted my gaze back to Doctor Han and spoke in a steady voice.
“If you truly believe I cannot heal him,” I said calmly, “then allow me to try.”
The hall grew noticeably quieter. The laughter faded into curiosity.
Doctor Han narrowed his eyes. “Repeat that,” he said slowly.
“You are confident that I will fail,” I continued evenly. “Aren’t you?”
“Of course I am,” he replied coldly.
“Then what harm could there possibly be?” I asked. “You have already administered painkillers. They are clearly ineffective.”
As if to prove my point, Greg let out another agonized groan, his body trembling as sweat soaked through his shirt.
“You wish to humiliate me,” I added. “Then let me proceed. If I fail, you may expose me before everyone here.”
The murmurs resumed, but this time they carried a different tone. People were no longer laughing as freely; they were considering the logic.
Doctor Han’s jaw tightened visibly.
I took one slow step forward, making sure my hands remained visible and non-threatening.
“Unless,” I added softly, “you are afraid that I might succeed.”
A wave of shocked gasps swept across the room.
“How dare you!” someone shouted.
“Arrogant fool!”
Doctor Han’s face turned red with anger. “Afraid? Of you?” he repeated incredulously.
I gave a small, indifferent shrug. “Then prove that you are not.”
Greg’s mother clutched Doctor Han’s sleeve desperately. “Doctor, please! My son is screaming! Do something!”
Greg cried out again, his voice breaking from the intensity of the pain.
Doctor Han hesitated.
I could see the rapid calculations behind his eyes. If he refused to let me try and Greg’s condition deteriorated further, people might question his refusal.
But if he allowed me to proceed and I failed, my humiliation would be absolute and public.
It was a calculated risk with potential advantage on his side.
Sonia’s father scoffed loudly. “This is absurd. Why are we even considering this nonsense?”
I turned to him calmly. “Because you want to see me fail.”
He opened his mouth to deny it, but no words came out.
I shifted my attention back to Doctor Han. “One minute,” I said. “If nothing changes within sixty seconds, you may personally throw me out.”
Doctor Han stared at me for several long, tense seconds.
Finally, he waved his hand dismissively. “Fine. One minute.”
Laughter returned, though it now sounded forced.
“Yes, bring him the water!”
“Let us witness the fool doing foolish things!”
A waiter hurried forward with a glass of cold water, clearly struggling to suppress a grin.
Another guest passed over a small dish of salt from one of the banquet tables.
As the items were handed to me, Sonia’s mother stepped forward once more, her face burning with anger and embarrassment.
“This is disgraceful!” she shouted loudly enough for the entire hall to hear. “Leonard, step aside immediately and let educated people handle this! You do not belong in this circle!”
Her words rang sharply against the walls.
“You married into this family by luck,” she continued harshly. “You said you loved my daughter, even when she was crippled. But we all knew you were trying to escape hunger. Standing here does not make you one of us.”
The entire hall fell silent again, all eyes turning toward me as I stood there.

CHAPTER 10
“Sonia…”My voice was not loud, but it was enough. The sound of her name from my mouth cut through the room like a blade. Sonia froze immediately. Greg’s hands were still on her waist, but the moment she heard me, she stiffened and quickly stepped away from him.Greg turned his head slowly. Our eyes met.Instead of looking surprised or guilty, he smirked. It was the kind of smirk that said he had already won.Sonia turned around fully, and when she saw me standing there, her expression shifted from shock to something complicated.“I… I didn’t expect you back so early,” she said. Her voice was not trembling. That hurt more than if it had been.I stood where I was, my mind still struggling to accept what I had just witnessed.“What exactly were you planning to say?” I asked quietly. “After I just walked in and saw you kissing him?”The room felt unbearably silent.Greg casually adjusted his suit as though nothing inappropriate had happened.Sonia rubbed her forehead as if she were tryin
CHAPTER 9
When I walked out of the banquet hall, it was still morning. The streets were not crowded yet. I walked without direction, my hands buried deep inside my pockets.Sonia’s words kept replaying in my head. “You embarrassed me in front of everyone, and I didn’t expect that from you.”Each time I remembered the look in her eyes when she said it, something inside me broke painfully. I had faced ridicule my entire life without blinking, but hearing it from her felt different. It was not the insult that hurt. It was the dismissal. The way she had looked at me as if I truly was nothing.I stopped at the corner of the street and let out a slow breath.“If only you knew who I truly am,” I muttered to myself quietly. “If you knew what I gave up, what I ran from, you would not have spoken to me that way.”A faint, bitter smile touched my lips.“I healed you,” I whispered under my breath. “And this is how you see me.”Before I could sink deeper into my thoughts, dark clouds suddenly rolled over
CHAPTER 8
For a few long seconds after Greg said the pain was gone, the whole hall felt frozen. No one clapped. No one spoke. They just stared at me like I had done something impossible. Then suddenly, Doctor Han snapped out of his shock.“This is not right,” he said quickly, rushing forward. “There must be a mistake somewhere.”He pushed past two guests and knelt beside Greg again. His movements were hurried now, nothing like the calm and confident doctor from earlier.“There is no logical explanation for salt water healing an unknown lung condition,” he said loudly, almost like he was trying to convince himself. “It does not make medical sense.”I remained where I was. Calm and quiet.Doctor Han grabbed the medical device his assistant had brought earlier. He began checking Greg’s pulse, blood pressure, breathing, all over again…“Check it again,” he told his assistant sharply.“I am checking, Doctor,” the assistant replied nervously. “His vitals are… normal.”“Normal?” Doctor Han repeated.“
CHAPTER 7
Doctor Han lifted his hand and signaled for silence, and gradually the noise in the banquet hall faded into a tense quiet. He turned toward Sonia’s mother, who was still visibly angry and embarrassed by my actions.“Madam,” Doctor Han said in a composed tone, “please allow me to handle him. There is no need for you to concern yourself with this matter.”Sonia’s mother frowned deeply. “Handle him how, Doctor Han? What exactly are you planning to do? This is already shameful enough.”Doctor Han adjusted his glasses slowly and glanced at me with a smile that did not reach his eyes. “Since your son-in-law seems to enjoy talking beyond his ability, I would like to give him the opportunity to prove himself.”A few guests laughed softly at his choice of words.Sonia’s father looked uncomfortable but said nothing.Doctor Han continued speaking, but this time his tone became firmer. “However, if he fails, there must be consequences. We cannot allow people to treat a serious medical emergency

CHAPTER 5
The silence that followed my words did not last long.Greg stared at me for a moment, then let out a short, dismissive laugh. He shook his head slowly, as if I had just told the most ridiculous joke of the evening.“You speak with a lot of confidence for someone who does not even belong in this room.”A few guests laughed again, grateful that the tension had dissolved back into entertainment. But all of a sudden, to everyone’s shock, Greg’s smile faltered for half a second. His hand, which had been lifting the wine glass again, suddenly froze mid-air.Then his face became pale as he inhaled sharply, gasping for air.“Ah—” The sound escaped him before he could control it.The glass slipped from his fingers and shattered against the floor. For a split second, no one understood what had happened.Greg’s hand flew to his chest, clasping it tightly.“What… what is this?” he muttered hoarsely. His breathing changed immediately. It became shallow and strained, as if an invisible weight had s
