Mikael stood at the altar, his hands clasped loosely in front of him, doing his best impression of a man who wasn't listening to every word being said about him.

Forty minutes. His bride was forty minutes late, and the silence in the gaps between the string quartet's songs had become its own kind of cruelty.

"She's taking her sweet time, isn't she?" Diane, his mother-in-law said, not bothering to lower her voice. She was talking to her sister, but he knew it was directed at him. "Can't say I blame her. I'd need a few extra minutes too if I were about to marry that."

Her sister, Renee, a tall and sharp-chinned woman, dressed in a shade of red clearly meant to outshine the bride, laughed behind her hand. "Just look at him standing there, like his life depends on it.”

His sister in law, Ella joined in. He does have a very committed look going. What's the character's name? From that cartoon. Zuko?" She tilted her head, studying the ridged, pink-white scarring that ran from Mikael's temple down the side of his jaw. "Only Zuko had a prince's face under his scar. This is just... unfortunate, all the way through."

A few chuckles rippled through the nearest rows of guests. Mikael kept his eyes on the officiant's shoes, on the small water stain near the toe, on anything that wasn't a face.

He had already stopped flinching at those jokes months ago. He'd told himself he had, anyway. But something about hearing them there— in a tux he'd rented because buying one had felt presumptuous, in front of people who would be his family in less than an hour — found the one nerve he thought had gone numb.

"It's not right, honestly," someone said from the second row — an aunt, or a family friend, Mikael couldn't tell. "Forcing that poor girl to marry him. Just because he got a little hurt playing hero."

"A little hurt?" That was Richard, his father-in-law, and he said it like he was correcting a math error. He didn't bother turning around to see if Mikael could hear him — or maybe he wanted him to. "We should have written him a check and been done with it. Instead my daughter's stuck marrying some burned, penniless nobody because he couldn't just let the building take care of itself." He shook his head, jaw tight with the particular disgust of a man watching his money disappear into someone else's tragedy. "Ruined her whole future, and we're supposed to smile and clap for it."

Mikael's fingers tightened slightly against each other, the only outward sign that any of it landed. He kept his voice, when he found it, admirably level.

"I didn't force her to marry me," he said quietly, to no one and everyone. "She asked me."

No one responded to that. It wasn't the kind of fact this family found useful.

The officiant, a soft, nervous man who clearly wanted no part of the tension gathering in the church, cleared his throat and checked his watch for the fourth time. "I'm sure she'll be here any minute," he offered, mostly to himself.

Mikael almost laughed. Not because it was funny, but because some small, stupid part of him — the part that still remembered being twelve years old and told exactly how to shrink himself so someone else could shine — wanted so badly for that to be true. Wanted, even now, for someone in this room to have shown up because they meant it.

He glanced toward the back doors of the church, half-expecting them to stay shut a while longer.

They didn't.

The doors opened.

Mikael straightened without meaning to — some old, foolish reflex he hadn't managed to kill — and then went very still.

Vivienne walked in first, in ivory silk that had clearly cost more than the venue itself, her face arranged into something that wasn't quite a scowl but wasn't far from one either. And a half-step behind her, close enough that it couldn't have been an accident, was a man Mikael had never met but recognized instantly from the wedding party's whispers months ago — the way Vivienne's voice used to soften on the phone when she thought Mikael wasn't listening.

Lucas.

He was handsome in the effortless, unbothered way of someone who had never once had to earn a room's attention. He didn't so much as glance at Mikael. He walked Vivienne halfway down the aisle, murmured something low near her ear that made the corner of her mouth twitch — not at Mikael, never at Mikael — and then peeled off to a seat in the second row like he had every right to be there.

Nobody stopped him. Nobody so much as blinked. Mikael understood, in that moment, that he was the only person in the building who hadn't already known.

Vivienne reached the altar and stood beside him without once meeting his eyes. Her jaw was set, her spine a rigid, furious line, like a woman walking into a business meeting she'd already decided to lose.

"You look lovely," Mikael said quietly, because it felt like the kind of thing a groom should say, even a groom who understood, with sudden and total clarity, exactly what kind of day this actually was.

"Let's just get through it," she said, not unkindly — worse than unkindly. Indifferently.

He did.

He said his vows to the side of her face. She said hers to some fixed point over his shoulder, her voice flat and clipped, a woman reading terms and conditions she had no intention of honoring. When the officiant finally reached the words husband and wife, Vivienne exhaled — not relief, completion. Like she'd checked the last box on a very long list.

She didn't kiss him nor was he even allowed a peck on the cheek. Then she turned, took three steps down the aisle, and let Lucas fall into place beside her, his hand settling at the small of her back like it had been there a hundred times before.

They left together. Mikael stood alone at the altar in his rented tux, and somewhere behind him, Renee was already laughing about something.

  • 23. A Winston

"Young Master Adrian," the older man said, his head still bowed, not daring to look up without permission. The whole room — no, the whole world — wasn't ready for this plot twist."No way. Are you kidding me?" someone exclaimed, loud enough to be heard over the low buzz that had already started spreading through the hall."What next, is he king too?""Young Master? Damn, who is this man?"Inside the hall, the guests didn't bother hiding their shock anymore. There was no point pretending to whisper when everyone was thinking the same thing out loud."It's no wonder he can afford all this," a woman said, her eyes darting toward Aurora. "Wonder how she managed to snag a man like him.""My daughter would've been a better fit for someone like that," another added, not bothering to hide the jealousy in her voice as she looked Aurora up and down.A third guest leaned toward her husband. "Honey, isn't that the butler of the Winston family?""Shh — I'm trying to hear."Vivienne's face twisted

  • 22. Twelve million dollar phone

"Did he say five million?" someone exclaimed, the words tumbling out before they could stop themselves."Oh my, that's a lot of money," another guest whispered, fanning themselves with a folded wedding program as though the number alone had made the room warmer. "Will Mikael actually be able to hold up his end?""Hmph. Let's see him pull out any proof," Vivienne said with a smirk, tilting her chin up so the cameras could catch her confidence at its best angle."See, everybody? He's suddenly gone silent," Diane said, a wicked gleam in her eyes as she looked around the room, gathering agreement like she was collecting votes. "Of course he can't provide any proof. Where's a useless nobody like him supposed to get the money for clothes that fine?""Someone should call the police," Ella added, crossing her arms with theatrical outrage. "These two need to be arrested for this. Impersonating wealth, or whatever the charge is called."A ripple of laughter moved through a small cluster of gues

  • 21. Five million dollars

"Come on, Mikael, tell us how you did it." Vivienne pressed when he stayed quiet. "What, did you do something you're not proud enough to admit?"Seeing Mikael stay silent, the crowd immediately started speculating — some siding with Vivienne, others not buying it at all."Could he really have done all this just to win her back? Damn, that's something," someone murmured."Doesn't make sense, though," another countered. "If he was really trying to win her back, why would he bring his wife to the wedding?""That's if they're even married. Could've just brought her along to make the bride jealous.""Of course he can't say anything," Diane said, loud enough for people to hear. "He's nothing more than a useless nobody. My daughter was the one feeding and clothing him, and he never once showed her a shred of gratitude.""Yeah," Ella added. "My sister was the one taking care of him — and that little slut standing next to him."Mikael took only one step forward, his eyes landing on Ella. "You

  • 20. Grand gesture

Lucas and Vivienne arrived at the reception just as quietly as they had left the chapel. Not that it wasn't by choice, the reporters were just too busy watching for Mikael and Aurora to notice them come in.Only the photographers Vivienne had personally paid to cover the wedding bothered to take their picture. Her wedding gown had been swapped for a cream-colored mini dress, but the shorter length didn't make it any less extravagant. The dress fit her figure perfectly, the soft fabric molding to her body before ending several inches above her knees. Subtle detailing along the neckline and waist added just enough glamour without feeling over-the-top.Lucas had changed too. He wore a rich green cotton shirt with the sleeves rolled neatly to his forearms, paired with tailored suede trousers that gave his relaxed outfit an expensive, effortless feel. A simple watch finished the look.Together, they still looked like royalty — two impossibly well-dressed people surrounded by luxury. But at

  • 19. The wedding that wasn't hers

The ceremony continued, but it was no secret that everyone's focus wasn't on the couple getting married anymore.Outside the chapel walls, the whole city had been thrown into chaos. Everyone was watching the live broadcast, and Mikael's entrance had become the top trending topic on social media within minutes."Oh my, he's so hot. Who do you think he could be?""Do you think he could be a distant cousin or something? I mean, he walked right to the front and no one said a word.""No way he's family. Did you see the woman he brought? Her dress is even more stunning than the bride's. That has to be on purpose.""I heard someone say his watch alone is worth more than the entire wedding budget.""Forget the watch. Look at how he's sitting. Like he owns the place."Comment after comment flooded in — thousands within the hour — everyone desperate for a name, a title, anything. The wedding hashtag had been trending all morning. Now it was like people had forgotten about the wedding entirely.

Diane whispered to Renee.Renee nodded. "I heard someone bought it for a million."E
