The carriage crossed the heavy drawbridge into the Frostfang Citadel just as midnight struck. Torchlight flickered against black granite walls that carved into the mountain rock itself, stark and unyielding compared to Silvermoon’s polished marble.

Kaelen stepped out first, extending a steady hand to steady Seraphina as she navigated the frozen stone steps. She didn't lean into his weight, but she didn't refuse the gesture either, her violet eyes already tracing the guard rotations along the battlements.

"Four archer posts," Seraphina murmured, her breath clouding in the freezing air. "Overlapping kill zones, but your eastern blind spot near the supply gates relies entirely on torch sight lines. A blizzard would blind them."

Kaelen halted on the stairs, looking at her over his shoulder. A slow, quiet sense of satisfaction settled in his chest. "I’ve told my defense captain that exact sentence for three winters. He insisted the elevation made up for it."

"Elevations don't stop shadow-walkers," she replied dryly, stepping past him into the warmth of the keep’s grand foyer.

Before Kaelen could answer, the heavy oak doors at the end of the hall swung open. A tall, scarred wolf in dark iron battle gear marched down the runner, flanked by four royal guards. His graying hair was pulled tight, his amber eyes locked onto Kaelen before flicking to Seraphina with immediate, cold hostility.

General Vane.

Kaelen’s supreme commander, his mentor since Kaelen’s father fell at the Border War, and the man Kaelen trusted above all others in his command.

"Your Majesty," Vane said, bowing his head just enough to satisfy protocol. "The border scouts reported your aura flare three miles out. You brought an unvetted Silvermoon officer into the war room?"

"Lady Seraphina is under Crown Sanctuary, General," Kaelen said, his voice dropping into a low, firm register that permitted no debate. "She takes her seat on the High Council as my Chief Strategic Advisor, effective immediately."

Vane’s jaw tightened. "A rejected Silvermoon strategist? With respect, Sire, the southern dukes are already restless over the war tax. Elevating a stateless outcast over your own commanders will provoke a mutiny among the high houses."

Kaelen stepped forward, his posture lengthening as his Alpha aura pulsed gently through the hall a silent reminder of who held the crown. "The high houses can voice their concerns at the morning assembly. Until then, General, you will grant her full clearance to the central ledgers."

Vane held Kaelen’s gaze for a long, tense second before inclining his head. "As you command, Sire." He turned his amber eyes onto Seraphina, his expression unreadable. "Welcome to the Frostfang Realm, Lady Seraphina. I hope your calculations are as sharp as your reputation."

"Sharper, General," Seraphina replied without missing a beat. "I’ll need the quartermaster's requisition logs for the last twelve months delivered to the council chamber."

Vane’s eyes narrowed slightly a micro expression so brief Kaelen would have missed it if he hadn't been watching them both. "The quartermaster logs are archived in the lower vault. I will have my aides gather them by morning."

"Tonight," Kaelen interjected, his gaze settling on Vane with quiet weight. "My advisor works fast, Vane. Have them on the table in an hour."

Vane bowed stiffly and turned on his heel, his heavy cape snapping behind him as he marched down the eastern corridor.

Kaelen led Seraphina up the spiral staircase into his private war room. A massive carved wooden map of the Northern Continent dominated the center of the room, lit by oil lanterns. Iron markers represented the Frostfang legions, while silver markers outlined the surrounding packs.

Seraphina walked directly to the map, unbuttoning her cloak and tossing it over a high-backed chair. She reached down, picked up a silver marker from the Silvermoon territory, and shifted it three inches south, placing it directly over a mountain pass inside the Frostfang border.

Kaelen watched her move, crossing his arms over his chest as he leaned against the heavy oak desk. "That pass is unmapped on public charts."

"Public charts are drawn to comfort nobles," Seraphina said, leaning over the table, her dark hair falling over her shoulder. "Your public war ledgers show twelve thousand gold allocated monthly to 'Border Wall Repair' in that exact quadrant. But stone doesn't eat grain, Kaelen. Your quartermaster is purchasing three thousand rations of salted beef and winter oats every two weeks for a garrison that officially doesn't exist."

Kaelen felt that same cold spike from the carriage hit his chest once more.

He walked around the table until he stood beside her, looking down at the map where her finger rested. He was close enough to catch the faint heat radiating off her skin, but his mind was racing through every report Vane had handed him over the past six months.

"Vane handles all southern quartermaster approvals," Kaelen said slowly, his voice flat as he confronted the horrifying geometry of her words. "He told me those allocations were emergency reserves for the winter drought."

"Emergency reserves are stored in central silos, not distributed to hidden border camps," Seraphina said, turning her head to look directly up into his eyes. Her voice was calm, devoid of pity or triumph just cold, undeniable fact. "You trust General Vane with your life, don't you?"

"He pulled me from the blood at the Battle of Red Ridge when I was eighteen," Kaelen said quietly, his eyes dark. "He built my father's army."

"Then he knows your blind spots better than anyone on this continent," Seraphina replied gently. She reached down, picking up a black iron piece representing Kaelen's elite royal guard, and set it right next to the hidden pass. "If you confront him without absolute proof, he won't deny it. He’ll trigger the camp, call in the southern dukes, and declare you unfit to rule before sunrise."

Kaelen looked from the map to Seraphina. For seven months, he had thought he was bringing her here to solve a financial leak. He realized now that her presence in his keep was the only thing standing between him and a silent coup.

"The logs arrive in an hour," Kaelen said, his hand coming down onto the table beside hers, his grip tight against the wood. "Show me every signature on those grain receipts."

Seraphina looked down at his hand, then up into his dark crimson eyes, a small, resolute smile touching her lips. "Get the parchment, Your Majesty. We have a war to stop."

The high stone archways of the Sovereign Hall echoed with the harsh clatter of iron as the veteran guards of the 4th Infantry hauled Lord Regent Varick and his six conspirators down the marble steps.Varick’s heavy velvet robes dragged through the dust, his frantic screaming fading into the deep stone corridors of the lower dungeons. The remaining noble lords stood frozen in two sharp rows, their faces pale, holding their breath as Alpha King Kaelen wiped his broadsword with a dark silk cloth and returned it to its scabbard with a sharp, echoing click. The atmosphere in the hall had shifted entirely. The suffocating, heavy Alpha aura that Kaelen had unleashed during the confrontation subsided into a steady, magnetic authority that filled the vast chamber.Beside the throne, General Vane stepped forward, his posture straight and his hand resting on the hilt of his ceremonial sidearm. He turned to face the remaining lords, his raspy voice cutting through the quiet."By decree of the Sov

The quiet of the chamber stretched long and heavy after Vane’s admission. The old soldier remained on his knee, his head bowed, waiting for the blade or the order of execution.Kaelen didn't draw his sword. He stood above his former commander, looking down at the scarred man who had carried him off the blood of Red Ridge ten years ago. His crimson eyes held no rage only the cold, unyielding weight of a King who had finally taken full possession of his throne."Get up, Vane," Kaelen commanded, his deep voice cutting through the silence.Vane blinked, slowly raising his head. "Sire?""You failed me the moment you decided to protect the boy instead of trusting the King," Kaelen said, his tone razor-sharp. "You fought a shadow war alone, and in doing so, you almost handed my continent to traitors.""I am ready to accept whatever punishment""Your punishment," Kaelen interrupted smoothly, "is that you will stand at my right hand tomorrow morning and help us burn this conspiracy to the grou

The northern storm followed them down from the peaks, blanketing the valley in a thick sheet of white fog. By midnight, the black stone spires of the Frostfang Citadel loomed out of the mist like giant, silent sentinels. At the edge of the outer tree line, Kaelen reined in his stallion. Beside him, Seraphina and their three surviving vanguard guards pulled their grey cloaks tight against the freezing sleet."The main gate is garrisoned by thirty Royal Crown Guards," Kaelen said low, his eyes scanning the torchlit battlements above the drawbridge. "If the High Council ordered the ambush in the pass, the gate captain already has instructions to detain us the moment we show our signet.""We aren't using the gate," Seraphina replied, unrolling a hand-drawn leather map against her saddle horn. She pointed a gloved finger at the base of the eastern cliff, where the citadel’s outer wall met the sheer granite face of the mountain. "When your father built the keep forty years ago, he installed

The cold air inside the subterranean bunker smelled of damp stone and bitter dried herbs.Kaelen stood before the mountain of wooden crates, a single vial of the glowing blue wolfsbane extract resting in his gloved palm. The pale light reflected off the hard angles of his jaw, his crimson eyes unreadable.Beside him, Seraphina ran her fingers over the wax seal stamped into the side of a transport crate."The seal belongs to the Northern Imperial Pharmacy," Seraphina said softly, her voice echoing off the stone walls. "Wolfsbane processing at this concentration requires a high royal permit. It isn't made in back-alley laboratories, Kaelen. It was refined inside your own capital capital's alchemy wing."Kaelen’s fingers tightened around the glass vial. "The capital alchemists report directly to the High Council of Dukes. The same council that dispatched the Royal Crown Guard to cut us off in the pass.""And the same council that pushed you to strip Vane of his command at sunrise," Serap

Steel clashed against steel, ringing out through the freezing gorge as snow whipped into Kaelen’s eyes. The narrow path left no room for wide cavalry sweeps. Kaelen’s five royal vanguard guards were cut off thirty yards back, their horses trapped in a bottleneck against three attackers, while Kaelen and Seraphina fought shoulder-to-shoulder against the rest.A heavy broadsword swung low toward Seraphina’s horse. Kaelen drove his stallion forward, taking the blow on his iron shoulder guard with a violent CLANG that rattled his teeth. In the same breath, Seraphina ducked under the attacker’s guard, her silver dagger piercing the gap in his neck armor. The warrior collapsed into the snow, his blood steaming on the black rock."Back to back!" Kaelen barked, pulling his horse tight against hers."I have the cliff face!" Seraphina called back. She drew a small iron flask from her saddlebag, lit the short wick off her horse's oil lantern, and hurled it high against the overhang above the rem

The mountain gale howled through the narrow granite gorge of the Whispering Pass, whipping cold white snow across the frozen trail. Three days out from the citadel, the landscape had stripped away all royal comfort, leaving only black rock, ice, and silence.Kaelen rode at the front of their small six-horse vanguard, his heavy dark fur cloak broad against the wind. Behind him, wrapped tight in a grey wool traveling mantle, Seraphina rode with her reins held in a practiced, easy grip.Kaelen glanced back over his shoulder, checking her distance for the third time in an hour."You don't need to keep checking if I've frozen off my saddle, Your Majesty," Seraphina called out over the wind, a slight, knowing curve on her lips. "Silvermoon border winters make this look like a spring breeze.""I’m not checking if you’re frozen," Kaelen replied smoothly, reining his stallion back until he was riding side-by-side with her horse. "I’m checking your perimeter spacing. A flank ambush in this gorg
