The mountain gale howled through the narrow granite gorge of the Whispering Pass, whipping cold white snow across the frozen trail. Three days out from the citadel, the landscape had stripped away all royal comfort, leaving only black rock, ice, and silence.

Kaelen rode at the front of their small six-horse vanguard, his heavy dark fur cloak broad against the wind. Behind him, wrapped tight in a grey wool traveling mantle, Seraphina rode with her reins held in a practiced, easy grip.

Kaelen glanced back over his shoulder, checking her distance for the third time in an hour.

"You don't need to keep checking if I've frozen off my saddle, Your Majesty," Seraphina called out over the wind, a slight, knowing curve on her lips. "Silvermoon border winters make this look like a spring breeze."

"I’m not checking if you’re frozen," Kaelen replied smoothly, reining his stallion back until he was riding side-by-side with her horse. "I’m checking your perimeter spacing. A flank ambush in this gorge leaves zero room to wheel a horse."

Seraphina let out a quiet, breathy laugh that turned into a cloud of mist. "Ah. Still the military commander, even on a mountain trail."

"Always," Kaelen said, though his crimson eyes softened slightly as he looked at her.

Up close, the icy wind had flushed her cheeks rose-pink, her sharp violet eyes bright against the harsh white landscape. Over the last three days, Kaelen had watched her adapt effortlessly to the brutal pace of his vanguard. She didn't complain, she didn't request extra fires at camp, and when they ate dried venison by the trail, she spent her time studying hand-drawn maps of the High Ridge terrain.

"Vane’s personal seal was missing from the archive manifest," Seraphina said, bringing them straight back to the puzzle as she leaned slightly toward him in the saddle. "Did you notice?"

"I did," Kaelen acknowledged, his tone shifting into dark focus. "When he surrendered his badge on the dais, he handed over his authority, but not his personal ledger ring. Which means his sub-commanders at High Ridge still answer to his private seal, regardless of whether he holds the title of General."

"That’s why he didn't panic when you put him under house arrest," Seraphina observed, her eyebrows knitting together. "He doesn't need to be in the field to give orders. He built the High Ridge garrison over fifteen years. The men up there aren't loyal to the Frostfang Crown, Kaelen. They are loyal to him."

Kaelen stayed silent for a long moment, the heavy crunch of their horses' hooves in the deep snow filling the gap between them.

"Vane took a spear through the shoulder to pull me off the field at Red Ridge," Kaelen said quietly, his gaze fixing on the white peaks ahead. "My father was already dead. The line of succession was in chaos. Vane could have taken the crown himself that night. The council would have backed him. Instead, he crowned a nineteen-year-old boy and stood behind my throne for ten years."

Seraphina looked at Kaelen’s side profile, seeing the rare, heavy weight of human conflict behind his unyielding royal mask. For all his ruthless authority, Kaelen’s flaw wasn't stupidity it was a deep, unshakeable sense of honor toward the men who had bled for him.

"A man who gives you a crown can still believe he knows better how to wear it," Seraphina said softly, her voice devoid of bite. "He might not want your death, Kaelen. He might just think you're leading the empire into a war it can't win."

Kaelen turned his head to look at her. The sharp wind seemed to fade into the background. "And what do you think, Advisor?"

"I think you’re stubborn, overly suspicious, and you carry too much of this continent on your back," she replied, her eyes holding his with steady, quiet warmth. "But I also think you’re a King who actually listens when someone shows him a better path. Vane stopped listening years ago."

Kaelen stared at her, a strange, quiet warmth blossoming in his chest a feeling entirely distinct from his Lycan beast's territorial instincts. It was pure, grounded respect for the woman sitting beside him.

Before he could speak, a sharp, piercing whistle echoed down from the high cliffs above the pass.

SNAP.

An iron crossbow bolt slammed into the icy earth inches from Kaelen’s horse. The stallion reared back, whinnying in surprise.

"Ambush!" Kaelen roared, his broadsword clearing its sheath instantly as his Alpha aura flared outward to steady the horses.

From the snow-covered rocks above, a dozen armored warriors dropped into the narrow gorge, their shields bearing no noble crests only the stark, silver mark of the High Ridge Vanguard.

Vane’s men.

"They aren't taking captives!" Seraphina yelled, drawing her silver daggers as two attackers lunged for her horse.

Instead of ordering her behind him, Kaelen swung his sword to parry the first strike aimed at her side, then maneuvered his stallion shoulder-to-shoulder with hers, locking their flanks together in the tight gorge.

"Cover my left!" Kaelen commanded, his voice dark and lethal.

"Covering!" Seraphina called back, slicing her blade across a bandit's wrist before kicking another back into the snow drift.

Together, jammed in the narrow mountain corridor, they fought as a single unit steel ringing against steel as the blizzard closed in around them.

The high stone archways of the Sovereign Hall echoed with the harsh clatter of iron as the veteran guards of the 4th Infantry hauled Lord Regent Varick and his six conspirators down the marble steps.Varick’s heavy velvet robes dragged through the dust, his frantic screaming fading into the deep stone corridors of the lower dungeons. The remaining noble lords stood frozen in two sharp rows, their faces pale, holding their breath as Alpha King Kaelen wiped his broadsword with a dark silk cloth and returned it to its scabbard with a sharp, echoing click. The atmosphere in the hall had shifted entirely. The suffocating, heavy Alpha aura that Kaelen had unleashed during the confrontation subsided into a steady, magnetic authority that filled the vast chamber.Beside the throne, General Vane stepped forward, his posture straight and his hand resting on the hilt of his ceremonial sidearm. He turned to face the remaining lords, his raspy voice cutting through the quiet."By decree of the Sov

The quiet of the chamber stretched long and heavy after Vane’s admission. The old soldier remained on his knee, his head bowed, waiting for the blade or the order of execution.Kaelen didn't draw his sword. He stood above his former commander, looking down at the scarred man who had carried him off the blood of Red Ridge ten years ago. His crimson eyes held no rage only the cold, unyielding weight of a King who had finally taken full possession of his throne."Get up, Vane," Kaelen commanded, his deep voice cutting through the silence.Vane blinked, slowly raising his head. "Sire?""You failed me the moment you decided to protect the boy instead of trusting the King," Kaelen said, his tone razor-sharp. "You fought a shadow war alone, and in doing so, you almost handed my continent to traitors.""I am ready to accept whatever punishment""Your punishment," Kaelen interrupted smoothly, "is that you will stand at my right hand tomorrow morning and help us burn this conspiracy to the grou

The northern storm followed them down from the peaks, blanketing the valley in a thick sheet of white fog. By midnight, the black stone spires of the Frostfang Citadel loomed out of the mist like giant, silent sentinels. At the edge of the outer tree line, Kaelen reined in his stallion. Beside him, Seraphina and their three surviving vanguard guards pulled their grey cloaks tight against the freezing sleet."The main gate is garrisoned by thirty Royal Crown Guards," Kaelen said low, his eyes scanning the torchlit battlements above the drawbridge. "If the High Council ordered the ambush in the pass, the gate captain already has instructions to detain us the moment we show our signet.""We aren't using the gate," Seraphina replied, unrolling a hand-drawn leather map against her saddle horn. She pointed a gloved finger at the base of the eastern cliff, where the citadel’s outer wall met the sheer granite face of the mountain. "When your father built the keep forty years ago, he installed

The cold air inside the subterranean bunker smelled of damp stone and bitter dried herbs.Kaelen stood before the mountain of wooden crates, a single vial of the glowing blue wolfsbane extract resting in his gloved palm. The pale light reflected off the hard angles of his jaw, his crimson eyes unreadable.Beside him, Seraphina ran her fingers over the wax seal stamped into the side of a transport crate."The seal belongs to the Northern Imperial Pharmacy," Seraphina said softly, her voice echoing off the stone walls. "Wolfsbane processing at this concentration requires a high royal permit. It isn't made in back-alley laboratories, Kaelen. It was refined inside your own capital capital's alchemy wing."Kaelen’s fingers tightened around the glass vial. "The capital alchemists report directly to the High Council of Dukes. The same council that dispatched the Royal Crown Guard to cut us off in the pass.""And the same council that pushed you to strip Vane of his command at sunrise," Serap

Kaelen drove his stallion forward, taking the blow on his iron shoulder guard with a violent CLANG that rattled his teeth. In the same breath, Seraphina ducked under the attacker’s guard, her silver dagger piercing the gap in his neck armor. The warrior collapsed into the snow, his blood steaming on the black rock."Back to back!" Kaelen barked, pulling his horse tight against hers."I have the cliff face!" Seraphina called back. She drew a small iron flask from her saddlebag, lit the short wick off her horse's oil lantern, and hurled it high against the overhang above the rem
