The Next Day
The sun had just begun to rise when the exit of the High Elder's hall was filled with people. They were talking noisily, seemingly arguing about something. Then, Elder Morem appeared before them, and they immediately surrounded him. "What does this mean, Elder Morem? Why is it all over town that you're sending that orphan to the White Temple Institute?" "Your actions are unjust, Elder Morem. The other youngsters here have trained hard and have reached Stage Cat as you desired! But instead of choosing them, you chose Emrys?!" The old man raised his hand to silence everyone. "Calm down, everyone. There's no point in arguing about this now. Besides, I've already decided that Emrys is the one we'll send to the White Temple Institute." "Wait, Elder Morem. Your decision doesn't seem fair." "Yesterday, you presented me with numerous problems, and I didn't stop you. After that, I said I would take care of the decision to resolve them, so now that I've given you a solution, you're rejecting it?" A young man raised his hand. "With all due respect, Elder Morem." "What is it, Sai?" The old man said as the young man approached him, accompanied by two others behind him. "I just want to say that my friends and I want to go with Emrys to the White Temple Institute. We've reached Stage Cat, as per the policy for enrollment in that school, so there shouldn't be any problem with that, right?" As Elder Morem observed the three young men, he saw and heard the truth. They had indeed reached the second level of the cultivation system. But instead of being happy that Emrys would have companions on his journey, the old man was worried for reasons he couldn't express, because he didn't want any more trouble. The entire Death Lotus clan had not always been this peaceful. Their ancestors lived in a town full of bandits and demons, but Morem had changed the course of every family under this clan's jurisdiction. He alone protected the entire clan, who had abandoned their naturally evil ways, but now, he seemed to be getting old because he couldn't stop the dangers that could potentially return to their original state. Morem let out a sigh. "I'll only agree if Emrys himself agrees to go with you to study as adventurers." Although Morem had a bad feeling about the young men's sudden suggestion, he also considered what might happen to the entire clan if he didn't agree to this request from the other young men who had also tried to become adventurers. "I'm fine with it." Everyone present turned to Emrys, who had just arrived. He smiled as he approached Sai. "Let's work together to save the entire clan from the very beginning. I'm counting on your support, Sai." Emrys extended his right hand towards Sai, who accepted it with a smile. "Don't worry. We won't let you down." "We're always behind you, Emrys." Said one of the young men, Loan. "Let's work together as adventurers in the future." Added another, named Eris. "Thank you!" Emrys replied with a nod. The people applauded what they saw. They liked the cooperation of these young men who, at their young age, had a strong fire in their hearts to establish a single goal: to save their family and clan. Emrys turned to the old Elder and asked, "Elder Morem? Why don't you seem happy right now?" Elder Morem was sad and worried for the young man. Because of his soft-hearted nature as Elder, he had lost control of the situation and allowed the flow of water to carry away all the plans that should have protected Emrys. So, because of this, Morem silently apologized to the young man and forced a smile at Emrys. "Go pack your things. Because soon, I'll take you to the exit of our town for your journey." "I've been ready since earlier." The young man showed his small bag of belongings beside him. "That's what I like about you, Emrys. You're so quick and always prepared." Sai praised the young man. Emrys just laughed. It didn't take long. The entire clan was at the town gate. The four young men stood straight in front of Morem, their serious faces observing each other. "I apologize that we didn't have a feast before you left to honor your courage in following your hearts and challenging the course of life to save your loved ones. "Just always remember what I always say. Be strong and don't easily surrender your soul to evil. Don't be greedy for money and power. Prioritize your safety and keep your conscience and honor clean in any situation—death or anything else. "A valiant adventurer is not measured by how strong they are in their strength level or wealth. Because a valiant adventurer is measured by how much they value the lives of others before their own well-being. You became adventurers not to become politicians. You became adventurers because of your natural instinct to save the lives of others! Travel with joy and fear of the Creator. Always do what is right and set aside selfishness. That's what matters. May you be kept away from darkness. And may our ancestors in heaven watch over you." "Thank you very much! Elder Morem!" The four young men bowed and shouted together. Three hours had passed since they began their journey. They could no longer see the land where their hometown was located from this mountain. Every hour, Emrys looked back at the path they were taking, and the smile on his lips wouldn't fade. As they were at the top of the mountain they needed to cross down to the other side, Sai turned to Emrys and spoke. "Let's rest here for a while." "Is that okay with you, Emrys?" Eris asked. Emrys nodded with a smile. "It's fine!" "If so, let's eat first. Can you find some firewood around here?" Emrys put down his small bag of belongings beside him. "Sure. I'll take care of it. You three rest here for now." "Really? It's okay with you for us to rest?" Loan asked, already sitting on a wide rock there. Emrys nodded. "It's really okay. I'm used to this, so I'll take care of it. I'll be back soon." "Okay, Emrys. Be careful in the forest." Sai said.Latest Chapter
106: Thief
“Rest, Vincent. You’re still too young to tire yourself out.” Paul left at the same time.“You only say that because our jobs are different,” Vincent replied.Paul laughed without stopping his walk. “And you think it’s easy to be the commander of the entire palace at this age?”“Fine, just go. I don’t want to hear you anymore.”---The night was cold in a forest. From the quiet, something moved in the shadows of the grass.Soon, a rabbit appeared. The animal carefully hopped closer to a clear stream, which reflected the starlit sky and the glowing moon. While the rabbit drank, a shadow suddenly appeared behind it and grabbed its ears. The rabbit could only jump in fear, but it could not escape the man’s grip. Not far from the forest, Leander sat by a fire, sharpening his sword.Soon, a man approached—it was Raphael. “I’m here.” He held up a rabbit he had caught from the stream. The next day, the two of them traveled again to a town about three kilometers away.In a narrow street, they
105: Busy-body
Emrys waited by the door with a guard. He was starting to get a little bored because he had been waiting for almost an hour, yet the princess still hadn’t come out.He wanted to knock and greet her, but the guard didn’t allow it.After two hours or more, the door finally opened, and Emrys’s bored expression was replaced with relief. He immediately bowed upon seeing the princess emerge. “Good morning, Your Highness.”“Have you been waiting there for long?”“Not that long, Your Highness.”The princess simply nodded and walked past him. Emrys followed, hands behind his back.“There’s one thing I forgot to tell you,” the princess said as she continued walking. “Since you’re now my personal bodyguard, you must always stay by my side. You must ensure I can sleep safely at night. Also, you should knock before entering my room—you should not just wait outside. Remember, in this job, you cannot take your eyes off me, no matter what happens. Is that clear, Mr. Valestron?”Emrys nodded behind he
104: Offer
Everyone was truly amazed. They had merely switched places, yet no one could speak from sheer shock and awe.Vincent adjusted his glasses again. His fingers trembled slightly as his chest pounded rapidly. Leander swallowed hard. Commander Ventri’s gaze was serious, and he covered his mouth while his sharp eyes stared intently at the boy.Jin grew even more nervous in his seat. He almost didn’t want to continue watching this.Until Paul attacked again, and in an instant, he appeared behind Emrys. He tried to take advantage of the situation to strike the boy in the neck. But Emrys was quick to turn and block, deflecting the enemy’s weapon in different directions using the borrowed sword scabbard. It was as sturdy as a real weapon, producing a metallic clang in the coliseum. Paul tried to move faster, hoping to overpower his opponent. But the boy matched him as if they were dancing, with Emrys guiding every move. From fear and anxiety, the audience’s emotions shifted to amazement at the
103: Get serious
Emrys’s fearless challenge ignited Paul to launch an attack. The ground cracked as the commander ran forward at lightning speed, closing the distance between him and his young opponent. He threw a straight punch, but Emrys slapped it downward and returned it with a spinning kick aimed at Paul’s face. Despite the speed, Paul blocked the kick with one arm, and the force sent him several meters back, leaving his arm bruised and smoking.Emrys’s strength was undeniably intimidating. Everyone watching was serious, mostly supporting Paul—except for Jin, his sister, and their little companion. They frowned at Emrys’s ferocity; he was strong, yes, but his excessive violence could endanger the peace the princess had maintained for years. They were genuinely worried for their respected commander’s safety.“What’s wrong? Aren’t you going to use your sword?”Paul took a deep breath, clenching his fists harder, ignoring the pain in his arm. “I just have a bruise on my arm. You haven’t beaten me ye
102: Taunt
The tournament continued.Paul was sent into battle for the second time and easily won without breaking a sweat.Leander fought once as expected, and with his exceptional sword skills, the assassin he faced didn’t stand a chance. As for the other matches, Emrys only fought once, as decided by the mediator. Out of all the battles, only Bell Clay lost—and suffered severe injuries.Several hours passed, leaving only four participants remaining. With no other options, the mediator called Emrys into the arena for the second time. His opponent was a man named Glade Sauros, around Paul’s age, but obviously larger and taller than Emrys. As always, Emrys showed no fear or worry, keeping his hands in his pockets.Glade drew two sickles made of solid steel and clashed them together to generate sparks and heat.Confident in his skills, Glade believed he would win; no one had ever escaped his weapons.Emrys merely extended his left hand and silently challenged Glade to come closer. Irritated, Glad
101: Voiceless comment
Bell Clay.Twenty-five years old.He was known in his village as the cleverest assassin, even at such a young age.He was also the assassin who had tried to attack Emrys at their small gathering using only a spike—but nearly got himself harmed instead. So even though he was nervous as he stepped into the arena, he didn’t intend to give up the chance to get close to the princess. He needed to gain her trust to become one of her soldiers, and he would do anything to eliminate his rivals in the tournament, no matter how dangerous it was. When everyone saw Bell stop at one side of the mediator, Emrys appeared from a wall on the opposite side, walking to a stop four meters from his opponent.Bell was taller, almost chest height compared to Emrys, but that didn’t stop them from locking eyes. Even during the simple palace gathering, their silent rivalry had already begun because of the spike incident—and amazingly, none of the other participants noticed. Their movements truly showed their sk
