NOLAN POV
The black bolt was already in the air when I understood that these men had not come to arrest me. They had come to erase me. Veyra slammed into my side before it reached my chest, and we hit the ground together as the bolt struck the rock behind us. A burst of dark energy bloomed outward and ate through the stone, leaving a smoking crater where my back had been a moment earlier. She stared at it. "That was meant for your heart." "Good to know someone thinks I'm important." "That was not a compliment." "Neither was the bolt." She dragged me into a tangle of broken boulders while the mercenaries fanned out below. "Anti-demon steel on the blades," she said, "but those black bolts were made for something more specific than me." "For me, then." I peered over the rock. Their leader hung back beside the wagons with his crossbow, two men were circling toward the lower path, and a fourth carried a brass device on his belt that pulsed in time with the markings on my wrist. "That box is how they found us. It's tracking the bond." "Then we run." "We run uphill, into the ruins." I pointed at the cracked terraces above us. "Down here they have a clear line at our backs, but up there the ground is unstable, and unstable ground favors whoever knows where it breaks." "That is reckless." "So is standing in an open firing line." She muttered something unkind about my family tree and drew her blade. "Make them come in small groups. I will make them regret it." She went over the rocks like a shadow. The first two men reached for her and were thrown apart by a single sweep of her sword, while the others scrambled to re-form their line. I worked my way along the slope, kicking loose stones into the gullies and prying a slab from its ledge until the only clear approach narrowed to a path wide enough for two men at a time. What I had not accounted for was how far magic could reach. A mercenary in gray robes raised one hand from well beyond the range I had judged safe, and a lance of force slammed into the ledge beneath my feet. The stone crumbled, and I dropped. A hand closed around my collar. Veyra had come out of nowhere, her boots braced on the edge as she held me over empty air. The moment she caught me, both sets of markings flared blinding white, and a pulse of warmth shot through my chest as though the bond itself had flinched. "Did you do that?" she asked, hauling me up. "I thought you did." "Then it reacts to danger." Her eyes narrowed at the glowing script. "I cannot tell whether it is protecting us or merely panicking." "Comforting." I scanned the field again and spotted the brass device bouncing against the belt of a stocky mercenary. A jagged shard of metal lay at my feet, torn from some old shrine weapon and still thick with magical residue. I hurled it across the slope into a side passage, and the device began to shriek and spin. Half the mercenaries wheeled toward the empty gap. "Now," I said. Veyra was already moving. She ducked beneath the leader's blade, caught his wrist, and twisted until the crossbow fell from his hand. I sprinted for the stocky man, slipped past his clumsy swing, and smashed the box against a rock until the brass split and the light inside died. A section of the terrace groaned above Veyra, and a slab the size of a cart tipped toward her. I threw myself against her shoulder and shoved her clear a moment before it crashed down on the spot where she had been standing. She stared at me from the dirt with her chest heaving. Neither of us mentioned it. Without the device, the mercenaries lost all rhythm. They hauled their wounded toward the wagons, and the leader backed away with a dark metal sphere in his fist. "If we can't take the demoness," he snarled, "we'll take what binds her." He crushed the sphere, and a pulse of black energy rolled across the slope straight toward our wrists. It hit like a fist through my skull, and the world went white. I saw the original Nolan on his knees in the shrine with blood soaking his shirt. I saw Veyra standing over him with wet hands and a pale face, and behind a shimmering barrier I saw a masked figure watching without moving. Then it vanished, and I was kneeling on the slope while the wagons rattled away in a cloud of dust. "Nolan." Veyra's hand gripped my shoulder, rougher than she probably intended. "What did you see?" I told her all of it: the blood, her hands, the barrier, the masked watcher. "I don't understand it," I finished. "I couldn't see who he was." She said nothing, and her fingers loosened slowly. I met her eyes and asked a different question than the one she was braced for. "Did you know they were coming?" For a moment I thought she would refuse. "I knew someone might investigate the shrine," she said at last. "I did not know they would arrive so quickly." It was not a confession, but she had offered it freely, and I decided not to press for more. I searched the abandoned crates and found a sealed packet stamped with the silver symbol of the Quiet Meridian. The first page was a cold list of instructions. *Original Nolan Rhyse, failed investigative asset. Shrine incident recorded as a completed termination.* Veyra went still. "That phrase," she said quietly. "They used it with me." I had never seen her look shaken, and I did not like how much it unsettled me. "You recognize it." "I recognize the way they say it." She looked away. "Open the rest." Beneath the official pages, folded flat against the back of the packet, lay one last sheet in a hurried hand. It was addressed to her. *The vessel must die before the transfer stabilizes. If the first attempt fails, eliminate the body and recover the soul fragment.* Below it, a second line had been pressed hard into the paper. *The demoness must never learn who gave the order.* Veyra read it over my shoulder and said nothing for several long seconds. I turned to face her. "Who told you to kill me?" Before she could answer, the markings on our wrists burned white, and a new message filled my vision. MEMORY FRAGMENT RECOVERED. ORIGINAL NOLAN RHYSE: FINAL MOMENTS. And this time, the memory began with Veyra's voice. "I am sorry. They said you would destroy us all.”Latest Chapter
Chapter 10: The First Seal Breaks
NOLAN POVThe thing that stepped out of the Hollow Gate had no face. Its body was a human silhouette assembled from shards of black glass, and ancient markings crawled beneath its surface like veins of light. Every step it took made the magic in the chamber flicker. The Quiet Meridian researchers dropped to their knees, and one of them began to laugh. "We succeeded," he said. "We actually succeeded."The entity turned its head toward him, and the laughter died. The man rose into the air with his limbs twisting as the creature drained the magic out of him, then fell like a dropped coat.Thessari clutched my wrist with trembling fingers. "That is not what they were trying to summon."The entity turned to me, and its voice scraped through the chamber like a blade on stone. "The vessel has returned."A wave of force rolled outward and shattered every artificial anchor in the room. Researchers screamed and scattered, and several of them did not get up again. Orlisse shouted for everyone to
Chapter 9: The Woman Who Dreams of My Death
THESSARI POVI have watched Nolan Rhyse die eleven times. In one future a blade finds his chest, in another the Hollow Gate collapses on top of him, and in the worst of them he survives long enough to become something that no longer remembers why it wanted to save the world.I have tried to change those visions, and I have tried to ignore them. I once even tried to kill him before he could reach the gate, but every choice I made changed one thing while making another worse. Now the Quiet Meridian has chained me to the First Seal, and the woman who once promised to help me escape stands beside the machine that will open it. I close my eyes as the eleventh vision ends and the twelfth begins. In this one the Meridian wins. Its researchers bend the mechanism to their will, and the gate obeys them like a well-trained hound. In the next they die screaming, torn apart by the force they woke. In the third Nolan stands on the central platform with both palms pressed to the ancient anchors whil
Chapter 8: The War Demon's Price
NOLAN POVThe woman waiting outside the maintenance exit carried no visible weapon, and she clearly did not need one. The air around her hummed with pressure, and the flagstones cracked beneath her boots with every unhurried step.Orlisse Drevane looked at Veyra first. "You look terrible."Veyra raised her blade. "You look like someone who has come to make a mistake."Orlisse ignored the threat and turned to me, her gaze settling on the mark glowing at my wrist. "So you are the human soul that has everyone digging up graves. Tell me, Nolan Rhyse, do you know what happens when a prison recognizes its key?""I'd love to say yes," I said. "But I've been here less than a day.""Then you are either very lucky or very doomed." She finally glanced at Mireth, who was trying to melt into the wall. "I was a war strategist in the old Sovereign territories, and I have tracked the Quiet Meridian for months. Their digging is shaking sites that should have stayed buried. This is no longer only about
Chapter 7: The Woman Who Sold My Death
MIRETH POVI have three rules for surviving a Quiet Meridian excavation. Never enter alone, never touch anything that recognizes your soul, and never bring a demon like Veyra Noxen anywhere near your hiding place.Today I have broken all three.Black mist was already creeping through the passage behind me, and the structure had recognized the man trailing Veyra. I had no wish to learn what it would do once it finished identifying him. I glanced over my shoulder and found him standing in the corridor with his head tilted, like someone who meant to demand a full explanation while the ceiling fell on him."Run!" I shouted."Which way?""Away from the mist! Follow my light!"I had come into these ruins days earlier to steal a ledger from a Quiet Meridian courier, so I knew the passages well enough to lead them. My lantern burned violet and exposed carved markings that ordinary light could never reveal, and I used them to steer us around the unstable sections. Every few steps I checked the
Chapter 6: The Voice That Called Me Back
NOLAN POV"The vessel has returned," the voice repeated, deep and patient. "Initiate recovery."The ground shuddered beneath my boots, and dust sifted down from the ledge above our hiding place. Veyra had her sword drawn, but she wasn't watching the ravine. She was staring at my wrist, where the black marking had begun to crawl toward my elbow like ink spreading through water."Tell me you know what that means.""I've been in this world for less than a day.""That was not what I asked."Before I could answer, the black crystal crumbled to dust in my palm. A deep metallic groan rose from beneath the ravine, as though an enormous door had begun to turn on hinges that had not moved in a thousand years. My interface flooded with unstable readings, and I forced myself to parse them. The signal wasn't radiating outward like ordinary magic. It was searching, sweeping through the stone until it found one particular soul, and when it touched mine, the bond between Veyra and me cinched so hard
Chapter 5: The Man Who Knew I Wasn't Him
NOLAN POVThe man in the silver-trimmed coat said my name as though he had waited a long time to say it. He did not sound surprised that I was alive. He sounded like someone ticking an item off a list.I kept my face neutral. "Should I know you?"His smile widened. "No. The man you replaced certainly did."Veyra's hand drifted toward her sword, and the emissary noticed at once. "Careful," he said mildly. "If you kill me, you will never learn why the Quiet Meridian chose you to murder him."Her fingers stopped an inch from the hilt. Her fury rolled through the bond like heat from a forge."I serve High Inquisitor Odran Pell," he went on, "and I have come with an offer. Surrender peacefully, Nolan, and we will remove the resonance bond, answer your questions about the transfer, and allow Miss Noxen to walk away unharmed."It was a very good offer, which was exactly what bothered me. "You know a lot about a bond that's an hour old.""We know a great deal about many things.""Then why bar
