the Friend I killed
CHAPTER THIRTY Julius stood in the center of the chamber, waiting for me to attack. The black sword in my hand felt heavier with every passing second. Its blade was covered in thin violet lines that pulsed like veins, and whenever I tried to release it, my fingers refused to obey. The System had chosen my opponent. Now it wanted me to kill him. Again. "You heard the announcement," Julius said. "Come on, Aeron. Let's get this over with." "Shut up." He gave me a tired smile. "Still don't like taking orders?" "I said shut up!" I forced my fingers open. The sword remained in my hand. A warning appeared. [TRIAL PARTICIPANT ATTEMPTING TO REJECT DESIGNATED WEAPON.] [REJECTION DENIED.] [FAILURE TO ENGAGE WILL RESULT IN IMMEDIATE TERMINATION.] My stomach tightened. The System wasn't merely encouraging us to fight. It was threatening to kill us if we refused. I looked toward Elena. She was striking the invisible barrier with everything she had. Daniel had joined her, firing
The New Seven
CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE Every pedestal began to glow. Violet light rose from the floor, forming seven columns around the chamber. The eighth pedestal remained dark, its armored occupant watching me without moving. Then the lights changed. Seven figures appeared inside the columns. I recognized none of them. One was a woman wearing silver armor. Another was an old man with a wooden staff. A third was a young man whose face was covered in black markings. The remaining four looked equally strange, each carrying a different weapon and wearing a symbol I couldn't identify. The System appeared. [AUTHORITY RECORDS RESTORED.] [SEVEN ORIGINAL HOLDERS DETECTED.] [WARNING: RECORDS DO NOT MATCH THE CURRENT TIMELINE.] I looked at the figures. "Who are they?" The masked figure on the eighth pedestal answered. "The first seven people who tried to control the apocalypse." "People?" "Once." The silver-armored woman stepped forward inside her column. Her eyes were empty, but her mouth move
The Eight Pedestal
CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT "Welcome home." The voice came from the figure seated on the eighth pedestal. It sounded exactly like mine. I stood at the elevator entrance, unable to look away from the silver mask covering its face. Black armor covered its body, and violet energy moved beneath the metal like blood flowing through veins. The blade across its knees was Widow-Maker. Not a similar weapon. My weapon. I looked down at my hand. The knife was still there. I tightened my grip. "Who are you?" The figure tilted its head. "You keep asking questions you already know the answers to." "I've never seen you before." "Not with your current memories." The violet symbols covering the ceiling brightened. Behind me, Elena raised her sword. Daniel aimed his rifle, while Julius stood with his hands ready to summon his unstable authority. The girl didn't move. She was staring at the eighth pedestal as if she'd just seen a nightmare return to life. "Everyone stay back," she whispered
The wrong Aeron
CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN "Julius was supposed to kill the right one." The words echoed through the maintenance corridor. I stared at the man standing inside the elevator. He had my face, my eyes, and the same scar-free skin I remembered having before the apocalypse destroyed my life. The only differences were the scar across his cheek and the exhaustion in his expression. He looked like me after five years of suffering. He also looked like someone who had been waiting a very long time to see me. "Who are you?" I demanded. He chuckled. "That's an interesting question, considering you stole my life." "I didn't steal anything." "You woke up seven days before the apocalypse with five years of memories that belong to me. You carry my experiences, my regrets, and my hatred. You even carry the mark that was supposed to remain with my corpse." He pointed at my left hand. The violet mark burned. I forced myself not to react. "You're claiming I'm a copy of you?" "No." His smile disap
The Man inside the Tower
CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX The System's warning remained in front of me. [NEW THREAT DETECTED.] [IDENTITY: AERON MILLER.] [THREAT LEVEL: UNKNOWN.] [LOCATION: CENTRAL TOWER.] I read it three times, hoping the words would change. They didn't. Somewhere inside Central Tower, another version of me was alive. I had spent five years fighting monsters, losing people, and struggling to survive. I had watched Julius drive a blade into my chest. I had felt myself die. Then I had awakened seven days before the apocalypse with my memories intact. I thought I understood what had happened. Now the System was telling me that the man who died might still exist. "Tell me that's a mistake," Daniel said. "I can't." Elena tightened her grip on her sword. "Could it be a monster using your identity?" "Maybe." The girl shook her head. "The System wouldn't identify a monster as another Aeron Miller unless something much worse was happening." I turned toward her. "You knew this was possible." She
The future's final enemy
CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE "I've seen that tower before." Julius's words followed us out of the railway station. The violet column above Central Tower pulsed again, illuminating the city in an unnatural glow. Every pulse sent a faint vibration through the ground. Somewhere in the distance, car alarms blared before falling silent one after another. I kept my eyes on Julius. "You said the man showed you a future before you killed me. What exactly did you see?" He walked beside me, his hands clenched at his sides. "A ruined city. Bodies everywhere. The sky was black, and there were monsters moving through the streets. But the tower was still standing." He swallowed. "The man told me that everything I lost could be restored if I followed his instructions." "And one of those instructions was killing me." "He said the gemstone you carried was necessary. He never explained why." "You could have asked me about it." "I know." "You could have trusted me." Julius stopped walking. For a mo
