"Ethan?" Lyra’s voice was as sharp as the knife she now held loosely at her side. "Why did that terminal just call you Ethan?"
"I... I have no idea!" Ethan shouted, backing away as the console began to pulse a violent, rhythmic amber. "It’s old tech! Maybe it’s a generic welcome message?"
"A generic welcome message that uses the specific name of the most hated man in history?" Lyra stepped closer, her eyes narrowing. "Explain yourself. Right now."
"I can't!" Ethan yelped, covering his ears as a deafening siren erupted from the overhead speakers. "System! Help me out here! Shut this thing off before it brings the whole zone down on us!"
"Initializing synaptic override," the System’s cheerful voice chirped in his mind. "But look, junior, security's tighter than a vacuum seal. You need more than a generic bypass. You need Tier 3 Clearance. You ready for the big leagues?"
"Just do it!" Ethan screamed internally. "My head is already split open!"
"Buckle up. This one’s a doozy."
A vertical bolt of blue fire seemed to tear through Ethan’s skull from the neck up. He didn't fall this time. He didn't gasp. Instead, his entire spine clicked into a rigid, military straightness. The frantic, wide-eyed look in his eyes vanished, replaced by a cold, predatory focus that looked ten years older and a thousand times more dangerous.
"Ethan?" Lyra asked, her hand moving toward her holster. "You’re acting weird. What’s happening?"
Ethan didn't respond with a stutter. He didn't even look at her. His hands moved toward the console with a rhythmic, mechanical elegance. "Step back, Lyra. You’re standing in the kill-zone of the thermal vent."
Lyra blinked, frozen by the sheer authority in his tone. "The what?"
"The vent," he repeated, his fingers dancing across the ancient keys with a speed that blurred. "When I bypass the primary cooling loop, the back-pressure is going to vent three hundred degrees of steam right where your boots are. Move. Five paces to your left."
"Who... who are you right now?" she whispered, moving almost despite herself.
Ethan tapped the final sequence into the glowing interface. "The name’s Ethan. But you knew that already, didn't you?"
The siren cut out instantly. The amber lights flickered and died, replaced by a soft, cool blue luminescence that bathed the bunker in calm. The heavy thrum of the security grid faded into a gentle hum.
Ethan turned away from the screen. He didn't look like the man who had tripped into a sewage grate an hour ago. He walked toward Lyra, his steps silent, his chin held high. He didn't stop until he was inches from her, his presence crowding her into the cold metal of the bunker wall.
"You look flustered," Ethan murmured. His voice was lower now, a smooth, honeyed baritone that vibrated in the small space between them.
"I’m not flustered," Lyra snapped, though her breath hitched. "I’m suspicious. You just hacked a high-tier security terminal in ten seconds."
"A man has to have hobbies," he said, leaning one hand against the wall beside her head. He tilted his head slightly, his gaze scanning her face with an intensity that felt like a physical touch. "And you have a habit of asking questions you already know the answer to."
"I don't know anything about you!" she hissed, though she didn't push him away. "You’re a civilian one minute and a ghost the next. Which is it?"
"Whichever one keeps you safe," he whispered, his eyes dropping to her lips for a fraction of a second before returning to hers. "Do you want me to be 'Steve' again? Would that make you feel more in control?"
"I don't want you to be anyone but honest," she breathed, her grip tightening on her knife hilt.
"Honesty is expensive in the ruins, Lyra. Are you sure you can afford the price?"
He leaned in closer, the scent of ozone and scorched metal lingering between them. His other hand reached out, his thumb grazing the line of her jaw with a confidence that was borders on arrogance.
Then, quite suddenly, his hand began to shake.
The cold focus in his eyes shattered like dropped glass. Ethan blinked, his knees buckling, and he barely caught himself on the wall as he scrambled backward, looking like a deer caught in high-beams.
"Whoa! Whoa, okay!" Ethan gasped, his voice returning to its higher, frantic pitch. "What—what was that? Why was I... why were you... did I just touch your face?"
Lyra stood pinned against the wall, her chest heaving, her face a deep shade of crimson. "You... you were... I’m going to kill you."
"I’m so sorry!" Ethan flailed his arms, nearly knocking over a canister. "The System! It—it did something to my head! It was like I was watching a movie of myself but I wasn't the one driving! Please don't stab me!"
"You were just... you were inches away," Lyra stammered, shaking her head as if to clear it. "You weren't even stuttering! You sounded like... like a damn general!"
"It was the memory dump!" Ethan cried. "Tier 3! It was an espionage package or something! I feel like I just swallowed a whole spy novel!"
"You're a disaster, Cole," Lyra said, her voice finally steadying, though her hand was still trembling where she held her weapon. "A complete, utter disaster."
"I know! I’m working on it!"
"Don't do that again," she warned, pointing her knife at him. "The smooth talk. The... the leaning. If you do it again, I’m not hesitating. I don't care who the terminal says you are."
"Agreed! Full agreement!" Ethan held his hands up in a gesture of surrender. "I prefer the stuttering anyway. It’s more... authentically me."
"It's annoying. But it's better than that monster you just were." She turned away, her ears still burning. "Check the screen. Did you actually unlock the map or were you just busy being a creep?"
Ethan scrambled back to the terminal, his heart still hammering against his ribs from the proximity to her. "Checking! Checking now! System, please tell me I did something useful before I snapped back."
"You did great, junior," the System replied. "You bypassed the encryption, stabilized the core, and oh, look at that. You found the prize."
The terminal screen cleared, revealing a high-resolution wireframe of the lower levels. A single, pulsating green icon sat near the center.
"What is it?" Lyra asked, stepping up behind him, keeping a cautious distance.
"It’s a schematic for a biological synthesizer," Ethan read aloud. "And there’s a stored canister. 'Regenerative Anti-Toxin: Tier 4'. Lyra, that’s it! It’s the cure for the heat-sickness. It’s right here."
"In the lower levels?" Lyra squinted at the map. "Wait. Look at the sensor readout. Below the supply room."
Ethan peered at the scrolling red data at the bottom of the map. His face went pale. "What does 'Massive Biological Signature detected' mean?"
"It means we aren't the only ones who found the cooler," Lyra said, her voice dropping all traces of fluster as she checked her magazine. "And according to that scale... it’s an Alpha Ravager."
"Is that big?"
"It’s big enough to treat us like toothpicks. And it’s sitting right on top of my medicine."
Ethan looked from the map to the heavy steel door that led down into the dark. "Can we maybe send a robot in?"
"No," Lyra said, her gaze fixed on the door with cold resolve. "We go down. And Ethan?"
"Yeah?"
"If that 'other guy' inside your head knows how to fight as well as he knows how to talk... we're going to need him."

Chapter 28: Pushing Metal
Chapter 28: Pushing MetalThe silence that followed the engine’s final, pathetic gasp was louder than the roar of the cylinders had ever been. It was a thick, heavy silence—the kind that only existed in places meant to kill you."Tell me that was just a vapor lock," Ethan said. His voice was steady, but his eyes were locked on the dashboard."It was a vapor lock," Kaelen repeated, his hands still white-knuckling the steering wheel. "Also, the tank is empty, the fuel pump is shredded, and we’re sitting in the middle of a literal frying pan.""So, not a vapor lock.""We’re bone dry, Ethan. Not a drop. Not a sniff. Not even a greasy smear in the lines." Kaelen slammed his palms against the wheel, the sound echoing flatly in the cramped cab. "I told you! I told you we were pushing the RPMs too high!""If we hadn't pushed, the Syndicate enforcers would have picked us up five kilometers ago.""And now we’re just corpses in waiting! Chapter 27: Fever and Fuel"Keep your foot on it, Kaelen! If we drop below sixty, the injectors are going to seize!" Ethan shouted over the banshee-wail of the dying engine."I’m flooring it! The pedal’s touching the rusted-out floorboards!" Kaelen yelled back, white-knuckling the steering wheel as the truck lurched over a deep fissure in the salt-crusted earth. "We’re losing compression in three cylinders! Ethan, this isn't a long-haul vehicle! It’s a yard dog! It was never meant to cross the flats!""It’s what we have! Adjust the mixture!""With what? My hopes and dreams? There isn't even a knob for that!"Ethan turned his attention away from the dashboard and back to the heap of blankets in the backseat. Lyra’s breathing had turned into a rhythmic, wet rattle that set his teeth on edge. Her skin was a translucent, sickly grey, mapped with veins that pulsed with an angry, fluorescent violet light."Lyra? Can you hear me?""The... the vents are closed," she whispered, her eyes rollin

Chapter 26: Heavy Metal Escape"Left! Go left!" Kaelen’s voice cracked as a bullet whined off the rusted lip of a dumpster, showering them with orange sparks."I am going left!" Ethan grunted, half-carrying, half-dragging Lyra. "Which left, Kaelen? The one with the armored patrol or the one with the cliff?""The motor pool!" Kaelen shoved Ethan toward a narrow gap between two warehouse units. "Third bay. They keep the logistics runners there. Most are stripped for parts, but some still have juice!"Ethan didn’t argue. Chapter 24: The Structural Weakness
Chapter 24: The Structural Weakness"The air is getting thin in here, Ethan," Lyra whispered. She leaned her head against the corrugated steel wall, her breath coming in ragged, shallow intervals. "How long has it been?"Ethan didn’t look up. His eyes were fixed on the door’s interior handle, or what was left of it. Chapter 23: The Mechanics of Betrayal"Is the safety on, Kaelen? Or has it rusted into place since the last time you actually had to aim at something besides a target board?" Lyra leaned heavily against the corrugated steel wall of the shipping container, her fingers tracing the edge of a deep dent in the metal."It’s not rusted, Lyra," Kaelen said, his voice grating like gravel over a dry heat. He didn't lower the submachine gun. The barrel remained centered on Ethan’s solar plexus. "And I don’t need it to be perfect to hit him from six feet away. You know what he is. You know what he represents.""I know what he looks like," Ethan interrupted, his voice intentionally level. He kept his palms open and away from his waist.
