"Keep moving! The gate’s just past that coolant vent!" Lyra barked, her boots slamming against the rusted grating.

"I’m moving! Does the air always taste like copper?" Ethan gasped, his chest heaving as they vaulted over a collapsed bulkhead.

"Copper? Kid, that’s ozone and radiation. Don't breathe too deep if you want to keep your lungs working."

"Good to know! Any other toxic fun facts before I pass out?"

"Plenty. Just keep your eyes on the red light. If you see it turn green, run the other way."

They cleared the final gap, dropping into the choking, sulfurous haze of the Red Zone. The heat hit them like a physical wall, thick and humid, turning the very air into a soup of heavy radiation. Ethan staggered, his vision flickering with static.

"Hey, you alright? You look like you’ve seen a ghost."

"Just... the heat. It’s like standing inside a forge."

"Join the club. My head feels like it’s vibrating."

Lyra stumbled, her hand clutched to her side. She slumped against a wall of scorched industrial steel, her breath coming in ragged, shallow hitches.

"Lyra? Hey, look at me."

"I’m fine. Just… give me a second."

"You’re burning up. Your skin is practically glowing, and not in a good way."

"It’s just the zone, Ethan. It’ll pass."

"You’re sweating through your tactical gear, and you can barely stand. You’re having a heat stroke."

"Don’t you dare tell me what I’m having. I’ve survived worse than a little sunstroke."

"You’re delirious. Where’s the nearest shelter?"

"Down there. Through the intake hatch. It’s an old bunker."

Ethan caught her as she swayed, pulling her weight against his shoulder. Her eyes were unfocused, her strength drained. He shoved the hatch open and dragged them into the cool, suffocating silence of a subterranean vault. He laid her on a metal cot, her armor clattering like a dead man's bones.

"Easy. Just breathe."

"It’s so hot, Ethan. Everything’s… it’s spinning."

"I’ve got you. Stay still."

Ethan ripped off his damp outer shirt, drenching it in the condensation dripping from the pipes. He knelt beside her, his hands trembling as he began to dab her neck and chest.

"What are you doing?" she whispered, her voice a weak, jagged thread.

"Cooling you down. You’re going to cook from the inside out if I don’t."

"You don't have to... I can do it."

"Shut up and let me help. You’re the one who said we’re a team, right?"

"I said we were a disaster."

"Then we’re a team of disasters. Now hold still."

The atmosphere in the vault shifted. As he pressed the wet cloth to her collarbone and shoulders, the air between them grew heavy, charged with a sudden, electric stillness. Lyra’s eyes drifted to his face, her gaze lingering on his lips before catching his own.

"You have... such steady hands," she breathed, her voice dropping into a dangerous, breathless rhythm.

"I’m just doing what I have to."

"Are you? Because you’re staring at me like you’re trying to read a book I’m not even writing."

"Maybe I’m just trying to make sure you don't die on me."

"Is that all? Because your heart is beating faster than mine, Ethan."

"It’s the radiation. It does things to the rhythm."

"Is that the only reason? Because you’re awfully close."

Ethan froze, the cloth hovering over her pulse point. The silence wasn't empty; it was full, pressing in on them, echoing with the sound of their ragged breathing.

"Maybe I’m just… curious," he murmured, his voice dipping low.

"About what?"

"About why you’re still looking at me like that."

Lyra’s hand drifted up, her fingers grazing the scar on his jaw. A shiver ran through her, but she didn't pull away. Her eyes searched his, a haunting familiarity flickering in the depths of her gaze.

"You look so much like him," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "The way you hold your head... the way you don't flinch."

"Like who?"

"The man who ruined the world. But you... you’re not him. You’re just a confused boy in a dead man's skin."

"Does it matter? Does the skin change the person underneath?"

"It’s starting to feel like it doesn't."

She reached up, her palm resting against his cheek. The heat from her skin burned, but he leaned into the touch, a jolt of pure, terrifying clarity flashing through his mind.

"Lyra," he started, his pulse echoing in his ears.

"Don't," she whispered, pulling him closer. "Just... don't talk for a second."

Before the distance between them could vanish, a harsh, synthetic chime shattered the air. The vault groaned as a dormant, secondary power grid hissed to life. Sparks showered from a console against the far wall. A massive monitor flared, casting an eerie, monochromatic light across the room.

"What is that?" Lyra gasped, pulling away and reaching for her blade.

"It’s... it’s the local terminal. It’s waking up."

The screen flickered, text scrolling in a violent, rapid blur of green phosphor.

"Ethan, look at the screen! What does that say?"

Ethan scrambled up, his heart hammering against his ribs as he read the blinking red notification.

"Ethan?" Lyra turned, her eyes wide, the softness of the last few minutes instantly hardening into a mask of pure, unadulterated shock. "What did that just say?"

It was a thick, heavy silence—the kind that only existed in places meant to kill you."Tell me that was just a vapor lock," Ethan said. His voice was steady, but his eyes were locked on the dashboard."It was a vapor lock," Kaelen repeated, his hands still white-knuckling the steering wheel. "Also, the tank is empty, the fuel pump is shredded, and we’re sitting in the middle of a literal frying pan.""So, not a vapor lock.""We’re bone dry, Ethan. Not a drop. Not a sniff. Not even a greasy smear in the lines." Kaelen slammed his palms against the wheel, the sound echoing flatly in the cramped cab. "I told you! I told you we were pushing the RPMs too high!""If we hadn't pushed, the Syndicate enforcers would have picked us up five kilometers ago.""And now we’re just corpses in waiting! "We’re losing compression in three cylinders! Ethan, this isn't a long-haul vehicle! It’s a yard dog! It was never meant to cross the flats!""It’s what we have! Adjust the mixture!""With what? My hopes and dreams? There isn't even a knob for that!"Ethan turned his attention away from the dashboard and back to the heap of blankets in the backseat. Lyra’s breathing had turned into a rhythmic, wet rattle that set his teeth on edge. Her skin was a translucent, sickly grey, mapped with veins that pulsed with an angry, fluorescent violet light."Lyra? Can you hear me?""The... the vents are closed," she whispered, her eyes rollin

Kaelen shoved Ethan toward a narrow gap between two warehouse units. "Third bay. They keep the logistics runners there. Most are stripped for parts, but some still have juice!"Ethan didn’t argue. He didn't lower the submachine gun. The barrel remained centered on Ethan’s solar plexus. "And I don’t need it to be perfect to hit him from six feet away. You know what he is.
