The boardroom plunged into absolute chaos.
"Taken?" Vivian gasped, her phone slipping from her fingers and clattering against the mahogany table. "My mother... taken by who?"
Nobody answered her. The board directors were staring at the television screen mounted on the wall. Live news footage showed the high-rise glass headquarters of Hayes Logistics at the Riverdale Port surrounded by federal tactical teams, emergency sirens painting the morning sky red.
The company was finished. But Trenton Hayes had not surrendered.
Julian Sterling suddenly lunged across the table toward the steel briefcase, frantically trying to grab the offshore wire transfer receipts that proved his treason.
"Give me those!" Julian shrieked, his eyes bloodshot. "You can't prove anything! This is forged!"
Caleb didn't even shift his stance. He brought his right hand down like a descending iron guillotine, slamming his open palm directly onto Julian’s reaching wrist.
Crack!
The bone in Julian’s arm splintered. Julian let out a high-pitched scream that bounced off the boardroom walls, collapsing to his knees while clutching his limp, broken wrist to his chest.
"Touch those documents again," Caleb said, his voice flat, "and you lose the other arm."
Old Madam Sterling slammed her cane against the carpet, her wrinkled hands trembling with rage and fear. "Caleb Vance! How dare you strike a son of the Sterling family inside our own corporate headquarters!"
Caleb turned his gaze slowly toward the old woman.
The chill in his dark eyes was so intense that the matriarch choked on her own breath, instinctively pulling back into her leather chair.
"A son of the Sterling family?" Caleb said, each word landing like an iron hammer. "Julian sold your distribution routes, embezzled twenty million dollars from your operational accounts, and took a five-million-dollar bribe to hand Vivian over to Trenton Hayes. If this company had fallen today, you would have died in a public debtor's ward, Madam Sterling."
The old woman's lips quivered. She looked down at the banking ledgers on the table, unable to utter a single counter-argument.
Caleb turned to Arthur Vance, the senior comptroller. "Hand these files directly to the economic crimes unit. Ensure Julian Sterling spends the next twenty-five years in federal custody."
"Right away, Chairman Vance," Arthur Vance replied, bowing with deep deference before signaling two guards to haul the screaming Julian out of the room.
Vivian didn't care about Julian. She grabbed Caleb’s forearm with both hands, tears spilling over her eyelashes. Her pride, her corporate coldness, her suspicion—everything was gone, replaced by raw panic.
"Caleb, please!" she begged, her voice cracking. "The text message... you said my mother was taken! Who has her? Is it Trenton?"
Caleb looked down at her. Her fingers dug through his jacket, trembling uncontrollably. For three years, Helena Sterling had berated Caleb every morning, throwing his laundry onto the floor and calling him a useless stray who didn't deserve to breathe the same air as her daughter.
Helena was selfish, vain, and cruel.
Yet she was still Vivian’s mother.
"Trenton didn't act alone," Caleb said quietly, his hand steadying Vivian’s shaking shoulders. "He fled toward Valenreach under the protection of the Blackwood Syndicate. They took Helena as leverage to force me into the Dragon Gate Arena tonight."
Vivian’s eyes widened in horror. "The Dragon Gate Arena? That’s an underground death ring! Nobody comes out of that place alive! We need to call the police, we need to call the military—"
"The law ends at the provincial border," Caleb said. "Calling the authorities will only sign your mother's death warrant."
He pulled his arm free gently, turning toward the double doors.
"Where are you going?" Vivian cried, running two steps after him.
Caleb paused at the entrance of the boardroom.
"I am going to bring your mother back," he said without looking back. "Stay inside this building. Arthur Vance has placed fifty armed Apex guards on this perimeter. Nobody enters, and nobody leaves until I return."
Caleb took the private executive elevator straight down to the underground parking structure.
The heavy steel doors slid open. Waiting in the dim concrete bay were four matte-black armored transport vehicles, engines idling with a low, menacing hum. Marcus Vance stood by the open passenger door of the lead vehicle, holding a secure satellite tablet.
"Report," Caleb commanded, stepping into the armored cabin.
Marcus slid the door shut and handed over the tablet.
"Lord Vance, the tracking signal on the syndicate convoy has crossed the provincial border into Valenreach. They have taken Mrs. Helena Sterling to the sub-level holding cells of the Dragon Gate Arena."
Marcus brought up a high-resolution satellite scan of the arena—a massive, reinforced concrete colosseum built into the base of a jagged mountain ridge.
"Furthermore," Marcus continued, his jaw tightening, "we have intercepted an encrypted radio transmission from the arena’s inner sanctum. The commander overseeing the operation isn't Lord Blackwood."
Caleb’s eyes narrowed into slits. "Who is it?"
Marcus hesitated for a second before tapping the screen, bringing up an intercepted audio waveform and a surveillance still of a figure standing on the arena's catwalk.
The figure wore black tactical armor, a silver ballistic half-mask, and twin combat daggers strapped across her chest. On her left shoulder was an embossed silver viper emblem.
Marcus looked Caleb straight in the eye.
"The order to kidnap Vivian's mother was signed personally by Commander Viper... your real sister, Liviana."

The rain over Mount Valen felt like ice needles, but the voice through the satellite receiver was even colder."A blood-feud?" Across from her, twenty board directors and family elders sat with crossed arms, whispering like vultures waiting for a carcass.Julian Sterling leaned back in his leather chair, a smug grin plastered across his face. "The banks opened an hour ago. Hayes Logistics filed the debt consolidation claim at eight sharp.
