The morning sun cut through the rain clouds over Riverdale, but inside the Sterling Cosmetics headquarters, the air was as cold as a morgue.
Vivian Sterling sat at the head of the conference table, dark circles bruised beneath her eyes. She hadn't slept a minute in the hotel penthouse. Across from her, twenty board directors and family elders sat with crossed arms, whispering like vultures waiting for a carcass.
Julian Sterling leaned back in his leather chair, a smug grin plastered across his face. He wore a fresh silk tie, pretending the humiliation of wiping duck soup off the hotel floor with his jacket had never happened.
"It's nine in the morning, Vivian," Julian announced, tapping his gold pen against the mahogany table. "The banks opened an hour ago. Hayes Logistics filed the debt consolidation claim at eight sharp. Where is the forty million dollars?"
Vivian tightened her fists under the table until her knuckles went white. "Trenton Hayes manipulated the maturity date. That loan wasn't due until next quarter. Our legal team is filing an emergency injunction—"
"Legal team?" Julian barked a laugh. "The city magistrate belongs to Trenton's father! In three hours, the court bailiffs will freeze our accounts, lock our factory gates, and put the Sterling family name on the national default registry!"
Old Madam Sterling sat at the far end of the room, her silver cane resting between her knees. She didn't look at Vivian. Her gaze was fixed on the corporate seal resting in a glass box on the credenza.
"Vivian," the matriarch said, her voice dry and unyielding. "You have failed as CEO. The board will now vote to strip you of executive authority. Julian will take your seat, endorse the merger with Hayes Logistics, and settle the debt."
"You're giving our company away for free!" Vivian stood up, her chair scraping loudly against the floor. "Trenton Hayes doesn't want a merger! He wants to strip our patents, sell our supply lines, and throw the Sterling name into the gutter!"
"At least he has the money to save our personal dividends!" an elder shouted.
"Sign the transfer, Vivian!" another yelled. "Stop dragging us down with your stubborn pride!"
Julian stood up, pulling a leather folder from his briefcase and tossing it in front of Vivian.
"Sign the resignation," Julian sneered. "And where is your useless husband? The one who hired cheap actors to play phone pranks at the hotel last night? Tell him to bring his toy black card and pay off our forty-million-dollar bill! Oh wait, he can't. Because he’s probably packing his plastic bags to run back to the slums!"
The boardroom erupted into mocking laughter.
Bang!
The frosted glass doors of the boardroom were kicked off their rollers, crashing onto the carpeted floor.
The laughter died instantly.
Caleb Vance walked into the room.
He didn't wear a designer suit. He wore clean black jeans and a fitted charcoal jacket, his dark hair cut sharp, his eyes carrying a piercing, predatory focus. Behind him walked an elderly man with pristine silver hair carrying a heavy steel briefcase, flanked by two stone-faced men in tailored charcoal suits.
Julian jumped out of his chair, pointing a trembling finger. "You! How dare a live-in beggar break into the board meeting? Security! Drag him out!"
None of the building guards moved. In fact, four corporate guards standing by the doorway kept their heads down, completely ignoring Julian's orders.
"Caleb..." Vivian gasped, her voice trembling. "What are you doing here?"
Caleb didn't look at Julian. He walked straight to the head of the table, stopping right beside Vivian. He placed a calm, steady hand on the back of her chair.
"I came to settle the bill," Caleb said.
Julian scoffed, regaining his arrogant sneer. "Settle the bill? Did you hear that, elders? The trash who washed our dishes for three years says he’s going to settle a forty-million-dollar institutional loan!"
"He isn't settling it," a crisp, commanding voice spoke from behind Caleb.
The silver-haired man stepped forward, setting the steel briefcase onto the conference table with a heavy thud. He popped the latches.
Inside were not stacks of cash. Inside were stacks of certified federal bond certificates and an official gold-crested document bearing the seal of the Central Sovereign Reserve.
The elderly man looked at the room with cold disdain.
"I am Arthur Vance, Senior Comptroller of the Apex Asian Banking Trust," the man stated calmly. "Fifteen minutes ago, Apex Trust acquired the municipal debt portfolio of Hayes Logistics from the national banking commission for sixty million dollars cash."
The entire room went dead silent.
Julian blinked stupidly. "W-What? You bought the debt?"
"Precisely," Arthur Vance replied. He pulled a single sheet of paper from the briefcase and slid it directly across the mahogany table until it stopped in front of Julian. "And as the new sole debt holder, Apex Trust has just declared Hayes Logistics in non-compliance with federal liquidity statutes. Their operating accounts across Riverdale have been frozen as of 9:15 AM."
Julian’s face drained of color. He picked up the paper with shaking fingers. The official red stamp of the federal regulatory agency was still wet.
"No... this is a trick!" Julian stammered, looking at Old Madam Sterling in panic. "Grandmother, don't believe him! Trenton told me this morning that Hayes Logistics has infinite backing from the Provincial Blackwood Syndicate!"
Caleb took a step forward, leaning over the table. His eyes locked onto Julian's sweaty face.
"Julian," Caleb said softly. "You received a five-million-dollar bribe from Trenton Hayes yesterday to force this vote, didn't you?"
Julian flinched, knocking over his water glass. "You... you have no proof! You're making things up!"
"Page two," Arthur Vance said calmly.
Caleb tapped the folder on the table. "Page two contains your offshore Cayman account statement, your wire transfer receipts, and the audio recording of you promising Trenton that Vivian would be delivered to his hotel room by noon."
Old Madam Sterling's eyes widened in horror. The board directors gasped, instantly pulling their chairs away from Julian as if he carried the plague.
Julian fell back into his seat, his mouth opening and closing like a dying fish.
Vivian stared at the bank statements on the table, then turned her head toward Caleb. Her chest heaved with shock. He had solved a corporate execution in fifteen minutes—without raising his voice, without flinching, and without asking for a single cent in return.
"Who are you, Caleb?" Vivian whispered, her voice barely audible.
Before Caleb could answer, a loud, panicked commotion erupted in the hallway outside.
The double doors swung open again.
A breathless secretary rushed in, her face paper-white as she clutched a trembling tablet computer.
"Chairwoman! Mr. Julian!" the secretary screamed. "Turn on the news! Hayes Logistics headquarters at the port... it just collapsed!"
Caleb's eyes narrowed slightly. He pulled out his burner phone.
A text from Marcus appeared on the screen:
[Lord Vance: Trenton Hayes just fled the city toward Valenreach with thirty armed syndicate enforcers. And someone just disabled the security grid at your residence—Vivian's mother has been taken.]

The Capital’s Decree
The rain over Mount Valen felt like ice needles, but the voice through the satellite receiver was even colder."A blood-feud?" Caleb asked, his tone level as he stared into the dark valley below.A dry, arrogant chuckle echoed through the line."Did you think a backwater city like Riverdale was big enough to hold the secrets of the Sterling bloodline? Vivian's mother carried something that belongs to the Valerius Clan of the Imperial Capital. As of ten minutes ago, the Clan Council issued an Imperial Extraction Decree. Fifty enforcers are already surrounding the Sterling family manor.""Who are you?" Caleb demanded."I am Dominic Valerius, Third Regent of the Imperial Clan.
