"My joint hurts like hell!" She groaned.

Back from work, Clara sank into her chair, tired eyes fixed on the glow of her laptop screen. Fatigue to the core. She felt the earth weighed heavy on her shoulders. Being around Kage all day wasn’t what she’d expected—more draining than she anticipated.

More command, more humiliation, more silence. Worse, he doesn't even have to do any talking, she just get engulfed by the weird shame and deflated self esteem.

"I have to finish this" she muttered to herself.

She knew rest now would only stall her work, so forcing herself to focus, she served a simple dinner and began sifting through her tasks. The door creaked open. She wasn’t expecting anyone, but Matt’s presence was easy to guess. It was about time he wrapped up his shift.

"Yo baby girl" Matt announced his presence.

He reached for her dinner plate, but her sharp glare halted him. Laughing, hands raised in surrender, he pulled back. “Relax tigress, I brought groceries,” he said, “I

“Oh, I need to give you the tea.” Those words might as well have been meaningless noise to Clara’s ears. Maybe useful enough to irritate her. She stood there, furious, realizing she’d wasted a good 20 minutes listening to Jessica fangirl over Kage. The Kage she knew! The way Jessica gushed about his voice, his hands, his hair, his ‘perfect face’—even the shoes! Clara’s disappointment swelled. Was this why Jessica had refused to tell her anything about Kage all this time? Because half the women in the hospital were thirsting after him—the same man she’d once divorced. If this was the crowd defending him, no story could touch him. It dawned on Clara at the moment: their plan with Matt might already be doomed. They should have thought about another plan. Something better. Maybe another 'accident'. Mind still racing, she leaned against the counter close to her, watching the nurses chat casually. The busy hall, patient, doctors, even kids and visitors had something to say. The

Two days ago had been Clara’s proper get-together with Matt. Their 'small' fight, date, and her new regime of being in control of him. Apparently, the blood, tears and lies were too small. They’d hatched a plan to deal with Kage. An idea that deep down Clara knew was risky, maybe even too reckless. She felt the weight of responsibility pressing on her, as if only she could make it work. "I believe in you, babe" Matt had told her. She wanted to be careful. To reject his plan But the hatred she carried for Kage was already shifting into something more insidious: SHAME. Every time she was near him, it crept in, and she refused to let it settle. She needed to let him know she was far better than him and not someone he could keep in his shadows Now, outside the hospital, Clara breathed in the 9 a.m. air. An ambulance screeched into the entrance, two paramedics rushing out with a stretcher. Her eyes immediately locked on the patient’s twisted leg. "What the ..." she whispere

"You are cheating on me" her voice barely audible as she stared at the name on the screen. Clara was shaking, tears pouring freely as her throat constricted, making it nearly impossible to speak. Her hands trembled as she held Matt’s phone, the screen locked but a message clearly visible: 'I thought you guys were a thing. Thanks for the gifts though. I could have gotten myself the necklace still.'She showed it to Matt, whose face went blank. The sight made her choke back a sob. He couldn't even fake remorse?“Salomé?” she asked, voice cracking. He just shrugged. His expression bretaying nothing."You are getting things for Salomé?!" She yelled.Matt stepped forward to take the phone, but Clara threw it against the wall without thinking. Heart racing, she dashed to the kitchen and grabbed the knife she was eyeing from the counter.Matt rolled his eyes. “Put that away. You don’t want to hurt yourself,” he said flatly, walking over to retrieve his phone. He smiled dryly. “Stil

  • 36: Silent bickering

“Afternoon shift, just checking something out,” Kage said, settling into the penthouse of his mansion with John and Gina. It was 10 a.m., sunlight pouring in through floor-to-ceiling windows, the city sprawled beneath them. Gina was reviewing the progress report from yesterday’s enrollment. It was a success. She mentioned more letters from the kids. Like before, the orphanage had the children write to the hospital, thanking and sharing thoughts. Kage made a mental note to read them later, after his day calmed down. 185 letters, great. As Kage sipped coffee from his cup, he watched Gina carefully arrange the letters into a box, the previous batch stacked neatly alongside. She hesitated, then said quietly, “Sir, With the government combo OVC program, there are scholarships available through the OVC center.”Kage frowned slightly. “I know. The team’s already scouting for eligible kids.”Gina's cheeks flushed. “I just thought you might be looking for an opportunity for Mia. The seve

After yesterday’s mid surgery, Kage spent the rest of the day consulting with his patients. Clara was shadowing him, moving silently beside him— something she had always hated. Being in charge was always one of her things, the center of attention. She would even prefer to be worshiped. But Kage, he couldn’t tell whether her quiet bickering inside or the micro rage she tried so hard to hide was more amusing or frustrating. It was amusing. Watching her take orders, knowing her place. It was a little bit fun. As he prepared to leave for work, he made his way downstairs and found Gina, Roseanne, and John already waiting. John was back. It was Tuesday, another day set for the Richard Ho orphanage kids to enroll for the health insurance. Roseanne and Gina took a separate car, as expected, while Kage shared the ride with John; his wheelchair tucked safely inside as usual. Occasionally, John would glance at him through the rearview mirror. Subtle, maintained his gaze on the highw
