Chapter 67

[Elara]

Dawn broke over Rome not with a shout, but with a slow, bleeding violet.

The stealth transport touched down on the reinforced roof of the Salvator Mundi hospital just as the city below began to stir. I didn't wait for Matteo to fully secure the landing skids. I unclipped my harness, slid the heavy side door open, and dropped onto the concrete.

The icy wind whipped my hair across my face. I smelled jet fuel, ozone, and my own dried blood. But all I cared about was getting to the fourth floor.

Cassian matched my pace, his heavy boots silent on the stairwell concrete. He kept his hand firmly pressed against the small of my back. It was a physical tether, keeping me grounded when my mind threatened to spin out of orbit.

We bypassed the security checkpoints. The Rossi guards lining the corridors took one look at our soot-stained tactical gear and stepped immediately aside, bowing their heads.

I pushed open the heavy wooden door to the private recovery suite.

The room was bathed in the soft, golden light of the morning sun. The harsh fluorescent lights had been dimmed.

Sitting in the chair beside the bed, holding his aunt’s pale hand, was Leo. My son was still wearing his rumpled pajamas, a dark bruise forming under his eye from exhaustion, but he was wide awake.

Lily lay in the bed. Her eyes were open.

She turned her head as the door clicked shut behind Cassian. She looked at my ruined combat suit. She saw the fresh blood smeared across my knuckles and the absolute, hollow exhaustion carving deep lines into my face.

She didn't look terrified. She looked profoundly, beautifully relieved.

"Mamma!" Leo jumped out of his chair.

I caught him as he slammed into my chest, burying my face in his neck. I held him so fiercely my fractured ribs screamed, but I didn't care. I breathed in his scent. He was safe. He was alive.

Cassian wrapped his arms around both of us, resting his chin on Leo’s head.

"We got her, Leo," Cassian murmured, his deep voice thick with emotion. "The threat is gone. You did your job perfectly."

I pulled back, kissing my son’s forehead, before stepping slowly toward the bed.

I sank into the empty vinyl chair, entirely drained. I reached out, my trembling fingers gently brushing the IV tape on Lily’s wrist.

"I am so sorry," I whispered. The tears I had swallowed on the cargo jet finally spilled over, hot and bitter. "They used you to get to me, Lily. I dragged you back into the dark. I almost got you killed."

Lily slowly turned her hand over, intertwining her fragile fingers with mine. Her grip was weak, but the fierce determination in her blue eyes was blinding.

"You didn't drag me anywhere, Elara," Lily rasped, offering a tired, genuine smile. "I chose to stay. I chose this family. Do you honestly think I didn't know what it meant when you married the King of Rome?"

I stared at her, completely stunned. I had spent fifteen years treating her like glass. I thought the violence of my world would shatter her.

"I am not made of sugar, sister," Lily continued, her voice gaining a fraction of strength. "You spent your entire life bleeding so I could wake up. If taking a knife to the stomach is the price I pay to stand by your side... I would pay it ten times over."

A heavy, jagged stone of guilt that I had carried in my chest for over a decade finally dissolved.

I leaned forward, resting my forehead gently against the edge of her mattress, crying silently. She wasn't broken by my shadows. She accepted them.

Cassian stepped up beside me, resting his scarred hand on my shoulder. He looked down at Lily, a deep, respectful admiration softening his sharp features.

"You have the heart of a Rossi, Lily," Cassian vowed quietly. "From this day forward, you have a personal detail of ten men. Nobody breathes the same air as you without my explicit permission."

Lily offered a weak laugh. "That's going to make dating incredibly difficult, Cassian."

"Good," Leo muttered from the foot of the bed, crossing his arms with a protective scowl that perfectly mirrored his father’s. "You don't need to date. Most guys are idiots."

A soft, genuine laugh bubbled out of my chest, cutting through the tears.

The heavy oak door of the suite clicked open.

Matteo stepped inside, looking apologetic for interrupting the family. He held a sleek, black encrypted tablet.

"Forgive me, Boss. Donna," Matteo said, bowing his head. "Viper Nine is on the secure channel. He says the global sweep is complete."

Cassian looked at me. The domestic warmth of the room instantly chilled, replaced by the cold, calculating reality of our empire.

I kissed Lily’s knuckles one last time. I stood up, smoothing the wrinkles from my bloodstained shirt. The Queen of Shadows settled back over my shoulders, heavy and absolute.

I took the tablet from Matteo.

"Let's see what the ghosts dragged into the light."

From there, I transferred to an unmarked freighter carrying black-market munitions to the port of Baltimore. The journey took four agonizing days. Four days of suffocating silence in a windowless steel cabin, reviewing the encrypted data Leo had squeezed from Vanguard's servers before the connection died. Chapter 78*[Cassian]*Betrayal is a poison that doesn't just kill the victim; it rots the very foundation of the house they stand in. I stared at the black screen, the silence in the war room stretching so tight it threatened to snap the air in half. The remaining Capos of the Five Families were looking around the room, their eyes wide with sudden, terrifying suspicion. The men they had bled with, drank with, and sworn oaths with could be Pantheon sleepers. The enemy wasn't an armada sailing across the Atlantic. The enemy was standing right next to them, holding an assault rifle. "Clear the room," I growled, my voice a low, vibrating rumble of absolute menace. Nobody moved. The shock had paralyzed them. "I said clear the damn room!" I roared, slamming my fists onto the obsidian table. The impact cracked the glass holographic interface. The Capos didn't hesitate a second time. They scrambled toward the heavy steel doors, desperate to escape the wrath of the King. Matteo hesitate

  • The Broken Halo

Chapter 77*[Elara]*Silence in the aftermath of violence is the loudest sound on earth. The stealth transport tore through the stormy sky over the Atlantic Ocean, moving at hypersonic speeds back toward Rome. The cargo hold was freezing, vibrating with the sheer power of the engines, but the tension radiating off Cassian generated enough heat to warm the entire cabin. He hadn't sat down since we extracted from the Apex Tower. He stood near the open cockpit door, staring out into the black clouds, his jaw locked so tight I could see the muscles feathering in his cheek. Nine sat perfectly still on the metal bench opposite me, cleaning his weapons with terrifying, robotic efficiency. I leaned my head back against the cold fuselage, closing my eyes. My crimson gown was in tatters, the hem ruined by concrete dust and blood. Every muscle in my body ached, a deep, bone-weary exhaustion that begged me to sleep. But sleep was a vulnerability I couldn't afford. "Sterling was a messenger,"

Chapter 76*[Cassian]*Falling through a collapsing skyscraper is not a clean drop. It is a violent, chaotic tumble through a blender of jagged steel, exploding concrete, and razor-sharp rebar. I locked my arms around Elara, pulling her flush against my chest, twisting my body in mid-air to ensure my back took the brunt of the impact. The heavy Kevlar plating beneath my tuxedo absorbed a brutal strike from a falling concrete slab. My ribs screamed in protest, but I didn't loosen my grip. We crashed through the ceiling of the seventy-ninth floor. The Vanguard mercenaries waiting below had triggered the charges perfectly, blowing out the structural supports. The ceiling caved in, crushing the staging area they had prepared. We hit the floor hard, sliding across a thick layer of pulverized drywall and shattered glass. The impact knocked the wind out of me, a violent explosion of white light bursting behind my eyes. I rolled onto my back, instinctively shielding Elara as a massive se

Leo’s voice screamed through the encrypted comms, completely stripped of his usual calm. "Get out of there! The Vanguard troops in the building weren't the primary security!
