Chapter 68
[Cassian]
There is power in money. There is power in fear. But true, unshakeable power lies in secrets.
Elara tapped the glass screen of the encrypted tablet. Lines of decrypted data scrolled rapidly across the display. Nine hadn't just executed the High Table remnants. He had raided their digital archives.
"Arthur kept insurance," Elara murmured, her gray eyes narrowing as she read the data. "He didn't trust the politicians and cartel bosses who hired the Commission. He collected leverage."
"What kind of leverage?" I asked, stepping behind her to look over her shoulder.
"Everything," she breathed, her voice dropping into a tone of absolute awe. "Bribes. Assassination orders. Money laundering ledgers. He kept physical copies of every dirty deal the High Table ever brokered. It’s an extortion goldmine."
"Where is it?"
"The Vatican Catacombs," Elara said, looking up at me. "Sub-level four. An old papal vault that was sealed a century ago. The data says the vault requires a biometric blood-key to open. Arthur coded it to his own DNA."
I let out a low, dark chuckle. "Arthur is currently a charred stain on a Swiss mountain. That vault is sealed forever."
Elara didn't smile. A cold, terrifyingly brilliant light illuminated her eyes.
"Arthur designed the lock," she corrected softly, slipping the tablet back to Matteo. "But he used Guild architecture to build the encryption. Which means I know exactly how to trick the scanner into accepting a false positive."
Two hours later, we stood in the damp, freezing darkness beneath the Vatican.
The catacombs smelled of ancient dust and decaying stone. I held a high-powered tactical flashlight, the thick beam cutting through the gloom. We reached the end of a forgotten tunnel, facing a massive, circular steel vault door entirely out of place among the crumbling Roman brickwork.
In the center of the door was a sleek, modern biometric scanner containing a tiny, retractable needle.
"He really was paranoid," I muttered, analyzing the heavy explosives-resistant steel.
"He was a narcissist," Elara corrected. She stepped up to the panel.
She didn't bring hacking equipment. She didn't bring a vial of Arthur's blood. She simply pulled a small, ceramic dagger from her boot.
Without a moment of hesitation, she sliced a shallow cut across her own palm.
"Elara," I started, grabbing her wrist.
"Trust me," she whispered.
She pressed her bleeding palm directly against the scanner pad, forcing her blood into the tiny collection reservoir. At the exact same moment, her free hand flew across the numeric keypad below the scanner, typing a sequence of numbers so fast her fingers blurred.
The machine beeped angrily, flashing red. DNA Mismatch.
Elara didn't stop. She typed a second sequence, overriding the genetic error log, flooding the local server with a diagnostic feedback loop. She was blinding the machine's localized memory just like Leo had blinded our estate cameras.
The red light flickered. It turned yellow. Then, a solid, glowing green.
Override Accepted.
Heavy, hydraulic pistons hissed. The massive steel vault door groaned, releasing a cloud of stale, pressurized air, and slowly swung outward.
I aimed my flashlight into the dark room.
It wasn't filled with gold or cash. It was filled with rows of sleek, climate-controlled filing cabinets and heavy, fireproof servers.
We stepped inside. I pulled a thick leather-bound ledger from the nearest shelf and opened it. The flashlight beam illuminated the pages. It was a detailed, handwritten log of illegal arms shipments purchased by the French Minister of Defense, brokered by the High Table.
I grabbed another file. Blackmail photos of a prominent Russian oligarch.
"Cassian," Elara whispered, standing in the center of the vault.
She was looking around the room, the sheer magnitude of what she had just unlocked crashing over her.
"This isn't just leverage," she said, turning to look at me. The shadows of the vault danced across her pale, beautiful face. "This is a leash. Whoever holds this room controls the governments of Europe. They control the cartels. They control the police."
I tossed the ledger onto a metal desk.
I walked slowly toward my wife. I didn't look at the blackmail. I didn't look at the servers. I looked only at the woman who had walked out of the gutters to become a queen.
"They don't control anything," I murmured, stopping inches from her. I reached out, my scarred hands gently resting on her hips. "You do."
Elara looked down at the bleeding cut on her palm. She slowly closed her hand into a fist, smearing the blood across her knuckles.
"I spent my entire life trying to escape the dark," she whispered, a fierce, untamed power finally settling perfectly over her soul. "I thought peace meant living in the light."
"The light blinds you to the knives in the shadows," I agreed, leaning down until my lips were a breath away from hers. "What do you want to do with the vault, Master?"
Elara looked up at me. The terrified girl Arthur had built was gone. The hunted, paranoid mother was gone.
Standing in front of me was the undisputed architect of the global underworld.
"We keep it," Elara stated coldly, a terrifying, beautiful smirk curling her lips. "We keep the ghosts. We keep the secrets. We build a wall of shadows around our family so high that God himself couldn't climb it."
I smiled, a dark, feral sound vibrating deep in my chest.
"As you command, my Queen."
I kissed her in the dark, surrounded by the sins of a fallen empire. We didn't need the sun anymore. The monsters of the world belonged to us, and the Rossi legacy was permanently etched in blood and ash.
The Viper was finally home.

I took a heavily armored smuggling sub from a clandestine port in Sicily, riding beneath the radar of European maritime patrols until we reached international waters. From there, I transferred to an unmarked freighter carrying black-market munitions to the port of Baltimore. The journey took four agonizing days. Chapter 78*[Cassian]*Betrayal is a poison that doesn't just kill the victim; it rots the very foundation of the house they stand in. I stared at the black screen, the silence in the war room stretching so tight it threatened to snap the air in half. The remaining Capos of the Five Families were looking around the room, their eyes wide with sudden, terrifying suspicion. The men they had bled with, drank with, and sworn oaths with could be Pantheon sleepers. The enemy wasn't an armada sailing across the Atlantic. The enemy was standing right next to them, holding an assault rifle. "Clear the room," I growled, my voice a low, vibrating rumble of absolute menace. Nobody moved. The shock had paralyzed them. "I said clear the damn room!" I roared, slamming my fists onto the obsidian table. The impact cracked the glass holographic interface. The Capos didn't hesitate a second time. They scrambled toward the heavy steel doors, desperate to escape the wrath of the King. Matteo hesitate

Chapter 77*[Elara]*Silence in the aftermath of violence is the loudest sound on earth. The stealth transport tore through the stormy sky over the Atlantic Ocean, moving at hypersonic speeds back toward Rome. The cargo hold was freezing, vibrating with the sheer power of the engines, but the tension radiating off Cassian generated enough heat to warm the entire cabin. He hadn't sat down since we extracted from the Apex Tower. He stood near the open cockpit door, staring out into the black clouds, his jaw locked so tight I could see the muscles feathering in his cheek. Nine sat perfectly still on the metal bench opposite me, cleaning his weapons with terrifying, robotic efficiency. I leaned my head back against the cold fuselage, closing my eyes. My crimson gown was in tatters, the hem ruined by concrete dust and blood. Every muscle in my body ached, a deep, bone-weary exhaustion that begged me to sleep. But sleep was a vulnerability I couldn't afford. "Sterling was a messenger,"
The Freefall Crucible
Chapter 76*[Cassian]*Falling through a collapsing skyscraper is not a clean drop. It is a violent, chaotic tumble through a blender of jagged steel, exploding concrete, and razor-sharp rebar. I locked my arms around Elara, pulling her flush against my chest, twisting my body in mid-air to ensure my back took the brunt of the impact. The heavy Kevlar plating beneath my tuxedo absorbed a brutal strike from a falling concrete slab. My ribs screamed in protest, but I didn't loosen my grip. We crashed through the ceiling of the seventy-ninth floor. The Vanguard mercenaries waiting below had triggered the charges perfectly, blowing out the structural supports. The ceiling caved in, crushing the staging area they had prepared. We hit the floor hard, sliding across a thick layer of pulverized drywall and shattered glass. The impact knocked the wind out of me, a violent explosion of white light bursting behind my eyes. I rolled onto my back, instinctively shielding Elara as a massive se

Sterling was dead. Cassian had put two bullets through his chest the second the lights cut out. But the billionaire’s final, hysterical laugh still haunted the air."Mamma! Papa!" Leo’s voice screamed through the encrypted comms, completely stripped of his usual calm. "Get out of there! The Vanguard troops in the building weren't the primary security!
