Chapter 62
*[Elara]*
You never truly stop being a mother. You just learn to hide the terror behind a much more expensive smile.
I left Cassian on the mezzanine dealing with the logistical fallout of the Russian’s sudden departure. I didn't take the main staircase down to the ballroom. I took the servant’s corridor that bypassed the heavy security checkpoints, stepping out into the cool, jasmine-scented air of the Roman courtyard.
The gravel crunched faintly beneath my heels.
Leo wasn't in his private quarters. I knew exactly where to find him. A boy who just orchestrated a bloodless coup doesn't go to sleep. He goes to pay his ghosts.
I found him standing near the edge of the sprawling hedge maze, the marble fountain masking the low hum of his conversation.
He wasn't alone.
A figure stepped out from the dense, manicured foliage. Fifteen years had hardened Viper Nine. The hollow-cheeked youth I had spared in Milan was now a broad, terrifyingly still phantom in his late thirties. He wore a dark trench coat, blending perfectly into the unlit perimeter of the estate.
I didn't draw a weapon. I simply walked into their line of sight.
Nine instantly stiffened, dropping to one knee in the damp grass, his head bowed. He didn't answer to Leo. He answered to my blood, but I was still the Master.
"Get up, Nine," I said, my voice quiet but carrying absolute authority.
The assassin stood, keeping his pale eyes averted in a display of fierce, unbroken respect.
Leo turned to face me. He didn't look guilty. He tucked his hands into the pockets of his tailored trousers, his jaw set with the same stubborn arrogance his father wore like a second skin.
"You were listening on the audio feed," Leo stated. It wasn't a question.
"I always listen, Leo," I replied, stopping a few feet away. I crossed my arms, feeling the cool night air bite at my bare shoulders. "You used a Guild calling card to threaten a Bratva lieutenant. You realize the implication of that move."
"It kept blood off the marble, Mamma," he argued smoothly. "Viktor was a rabid dog. If I let Papa’s Capos handle him, it would have escalated into a shootout. I used the shadows to keep the light clean."
I stared at my son. He was eighteen, brilliant, and terrifyingly pragmatic. He had weaponized the myth of his mother without firing a single shot.
"The shadows come with a price, Leo," I warned him, stepping closer. I reached out, resting my hand against his lapel. "When you threaten a man with ghosts, you invite the dark into your house. Are you prepared to manage the consequences of that?"
"I am," he vowed, his dark eyes locking onto mine with absolute, unshakable conviction.
I looked past him, my gaze settling on the silent assassin waiting in the periphery.
"How long have you been feeding him intel, Nine?" I asked.
"Five years, Master," Nine answered softly. "The Heir requested an encrypted channel on his thirteenth birthday. We provide the data. He builds the strategy. We do not strike without your explicit, overarching consent. He only uses us to watch."
I let out a slow, heavy exhale. I couldn't be furious. I had literally trained him to think this way. Cassian had taught him how to absorb a punch, but I had inadvertently taught him how to ensure the punch never landed in the first place.
"Mamma," Leo said, his voice dropping the commanding edge of the Don-in-training, reverting to the boy who just wanted his mother’s approval. "I didn't cross the line. I just held it."
I looked up at his face, brushing a stray dark curl from his forehead.
"You did perfectly," I admitted, the fierce maternal pride finally bleeding through my icy facade. "You dismantled him. Your father is incredibly proud."
A genuine, relieved smile broke across Leo's face.
The tender moment shattered a second later.
Nine took a sudden, rigid step forward, breaking protocol. His pale eyes flicked from the gravel up to my face, carrying a grim, urgent intensity.
"Master," Nine interrupted, his voice dropping into a harsh rasp. "The Russian lieutenant was not a rogue actor. Viktor was a distraction."
The courtyard suddenly felt ten degrees colder.
I dropped my hand from Leo's chest, pivoting to face the assassin. "What do you mean, a distraction? Viktor embezzled money. The ledger proved it."
"The ledger was planted," Nine corrected grimly. He reached into his dark coat, pulling out a crushed, bloodstained encrypted flash drive. He held it out to me. "My network intercepted a coded transmission from Moscow three minutes ago. The Pakhan sent Viktor here specifically to cause a scene in your ballroom. He wanted the King and the Heir looking at the front door."
Leo stepped forward, snatching the drive from Nine’s hand. "Looking at the front door while they hit the back," my son deduced, his mind calculating the trap at lightning speed.
"Hit what, Nine?" I demanded, my heart kicking against my ribs. "The perimeter is secure. Cassian has eyes on every gate."
"They didn't hit the house, Elara," Nine whispered, dropping the formal title entirely. The absolute dread in his voice made my blood turn to slush.
"Where is Lily?" Nine asked.
The world tilted violently on its axis.
"She’s at the hospital," I choked out, a wave of pure nausea hitting the back of my throat. "She was pulling a double shift in the trauma ward tonight."
"The hospital security grid went completely dark four minutes ago," Nine reported, his hands clenching into fists at his sides. "A heavily armed extraction team breached the surgical floor. They didn't take hostages. They took her."
I couldn't breathe.
They hadn't come for the Don. They hadn't come for the Heir.
They took the one person in this world I had burned down mountains to protect.
"Get my husband," I whispered to Leo, my voice a hollow, dead sound that promised a global apocalypse. I didn't look at my son. I looked at the dark tree line, the Viper violently tearing its way out of a decade-long hibernation.
"Tell him the Queen is going to work."

I took a heavily armored smuggling sub from a clandestine port in Sicily, riding beneath the radar of European maritime patrols until we reached international waters. From there, I transferred to an unmarked freighter carrying black-market munitions to the port of Baltimore. The journey took four agonizing days. Four days of suffocating silence in a windowless steel cabin, reviewing the encrypted data Leo had squeezed from Vanguard's servers before the connection died. The Rot Within
Chapter 78*[Cassian]*Betrayal is a poison that doesn't just kill the victim; it rots the very foundation of the house they stand in. I stared at the black screen, the silence in the war room stretching so tight it threatened to snap the air in half. The remaining Capos of the Five Families were looking around the room, their eyes wide with sudden, terrifying suspicion. The men they had bled with, drank with, and sworn oaths with could be Pantheon sleepers. The enemy wasn't an armada sailing across the Atlantic. The enemy was standing right next to them, holding an assault rifle. "Clear the room," I growled, my voice a low, vibrating rumble of absolute menace. Nobody moved. The shock had paralyzed them. "I said clear the damn room!" I roared, slamming my fists onto the obsidian table. The impact cracked the glass holographic interface. The Capos didn't hesitate a second time. They scrambled toward the heavy steel doors, desperate to escape the wrath of the King. Matteo hesitate
The Broken Halo
Chapter 77*[Elara]*Silence in the aftermath of violence is the loudest sound on earth. The stealth transport tore through the stormy sky over the Atlantic Ocean, moving at hypersonic speeds back toward Rome. The cargo hold was freezing, vibrating with the sheer power of the engines, but the tension radiating off Cassian generated enough heat to warm the entire cabin. He hadn't sat down since we extracted from the Apex Tower. He stood near the open cockpit door, staring out into the black clouds, his jaw locked so tight I could see the muscles feathering in his cheek. Nine sat perfectly still on the metal bench opposite me, cleaning his weapons with terrifying, robotic efficiency. I leaned my head back against the cold fuselage, closing my eyes. My crimson gown was in tatters, the hem ruined by concrete dust and blood. Every muscle in my body ached, a deep, bone-weary exhaustion that begged me to sleep. But sleep was a vulnerability I couldn't afford. "Sterling was a messenger,"
The Freefall Crucible
Chapter 76*[Cassian]*Falling through a collapsing skyscraper is not a clean drop. It is a violent, chaotic tumble through a blender of jagged steel, exploding concrete, and razor-sharp rebar. I locked my arms around Elara, pulling her flush against my chest, twisting my body in mid-air to ensure my back took the brunt of the impact. The heavy Kevlar plating beneath my tuxedo absorbed a brutal strike from a falling concrete slab. My ribs screamed in protest, but I didn't loosen my grip. We crashed through the ceiling of the seventy-ninth floor. The Vanguard mercenaries waiting below had triggered the charges perfectly, blowing out the structural supports. The ceiling caved in, crushing the staging area they had prepared. We hit the floor hard, sliding across a thick layer of pulverized drywall and shattered glass. The impact knocked the wind out of me, a violent explosion of white light bursting behind my eyes. I rolled onto my back, instinctively shielding Elara as a massive se

Chapter 75[Elara]The heavy steel shutters hit the marble floor with a deafening, earth-shaking slam. The crystal chandeliers flickered and died, plunging the opulent ballroom into total, suffocating blackness."Night vision! Now!" Cassian roared, the sound of his pistol discharging twice echoing through the dark.I didn't need the command. I tapped the microscopic sensor behind my ear, activating the specialized contact lenses resting over my eyes. The pitch-black room instantly flared into a crisp, glowing green.I looked down. Sterling was dead. Cassian had put two bullets through his chest the second the lights cut out. But the billionaire’s final, hysterical laugh still haunted the air."Mamma! Papa!" Leo’s voice screamed through the encrypted comms, completely stripped of his usual calm. "Get out of there! The Vanguard troops in the building weren't the primary security! It was a honeypot!""Calm down, Leo. Talk to me," I ordered, spinning back-to-back with Cassian, my ceramic

Chapter 74[Cassian]The glass didn't shatter from an explosion. It shattered because Viper Nine had just thrown a Vanguard mercenary completely through it.The string quartet abruptly stopped playing. They had never fought the King and Queen of Rome.I didn't reach for my gun. I grabbed the heavy, six-foot-tall ice sculpture of a swan resting on the table beside me. With a guttural roar, I heaved the massive block of ice directly into the nearest cluster of guards. The sheer weight crushed two mercenaries to the floor, their weapons clattering uselessly away.Beside me,
