Chapter 61

*[Elara]*

Five years is a blink of an eye when you are building a dynasty, but it is an eternity for a boy sharpening his teeth.

I stood on the glass-enclosed mezzanine overlooking the grand ballroom of our newly rebuilt Roman estate. The floor-to-ceiling windows were soundproof, muting the tense negotiation happening forty feet below. I rested my hands on the polished brass railing. The faded silver scars on my shoulders were hidden beneath the high collar of a black velvet gown.

Cassian stood directly behind me, a crystal tumbler of scotch loosely gripped in his left hand. The silver at his temples had spread, framing his sharp features with a distinguished, lethal gravity.

We weren't intervening. We were observing.

Down on the marble floor, our eighteen-year-old son sat at the head of a long mahogany table.

Leo was no longer the terrified boy hiding in a bunker. He had grown into a towering, broad-shouldered reflection of his father, wearing a bespoke charcoal suit that concealed the tactical ceramic blades strapped to his ribs.

Sitting across from him was Viktor, an ambitious, newly appointed lieutenant of the Bratva. The Russian had mistaken the Rossi Syndicate’s decade of quiet peace for weakness.

Viktor slammed a heavy fist onto the table. Even through the soundproof glass, the aggression radiated upward.

"You insult me, boy!" Viktor’s voice bled through the secure audio feed piped into my earpiece. "I demand to speak to the Don! I will not negotiate shipping routes with a teenager who hasn't earned his blood!"

Two massive Russian bodyguards racked the slides of their submachine guns, stepping menacingly toward the table.

Cassian took a slow sip of his scotch. He didn't tense. He didn't reach for his weapon. He just watched his son.

Down below, Leo didn't flinch. He didn't reach for the concealed blades I had taught him how to throw with surgical precision.

Instead, Leo calmly reached for his espresso cup, taking a slow sip. He set the cup down, his dark, obsidian eyes locking onto the furious Russian lieutenant.

"You don't get to speak to the King, Viktor," Leo said, his voice a low, vibrating rumble that sent a fierce jolt of maternal pride straight through my chest. He sounded exactly like Cassian. "The King only speaks to equals. You are a middleman who embezzled three million euros from your own Pakhan last quarter."

Viktor’s face drained of color. The arrogant bluster vanished, instantly replaced by sheer, naked panic.

"Lies," the Russian choked out, glancing nervously at his own guards. "You have no proof."

Leo smirked. It was a cold, terrifying expression.

He reached into his suit jacket and pulled out a small, intricately carved wooden chess piece. A knight, wrapped in a silver viper. He placed it gently on the center of the table.

"My shadows pulled the offshore ledger from your encrypted servers an hour ago," Leo stated clinically, the lethal detachment of the Viper echoing in his cadence. "The file was anonymously emailed to your Pakhan in Moscow. He is currently reading it."

Viktor stumbled backward, his chair scraping violently against the marble. He looked at the tiny silver snake as if it were a live grenade.

"You killed me," Viktor whispered, the realization setting in. If he returned to Russia, his own boss would execute him for theft.

"I didn't touch you," Leo corrected smoothly, leaning back in his chair and crossing his arms. "I simply rearranged the board. You have exactly ten minutes to leave my city before your own men receive the order to put a bullet in your head. Run, Viktor."

The Russian lieutenant didn't argue. He turned and sprinted toward the exit, his confused bodyguards scrambling to follow him out the heavy oak doors.

The ballroom fell completely silent.

A bloodless execution. A flawless checkmate.

Cassian let out a low, deeply satisfied hum. He stepped forward, wrapping his free arm around my waist, pulling my back flush against his chest.

"He didn't even raise his voice," Cassian murmured, pressing a warm kiss to my temple. "He dismantled a Bratva lieutenant with a piece of paper and a rumor."

"He fought with his mind," I whispered, leaning back into his solid heat, my heart swelling with an overwhelming, profound peace. "Just like his father taught him."

Down on the floor, Leo looked up toward the mezzanine.

He couldn't see us through the tinted glass, but he knew exactly where we were standing. Our son gave a subtle, respectful nod to the empty balcony, acknowledging the ghosts who had built the throne he was preparing to inherit.

Then, Leo picked up his espresso, turned his back to the doors, and walked calmly out of the ballroom.

I turned around in Cassian’s arms, looking up at the man who had kidnapped me, chained me, and ultimately set my soul entirely free.

"The empire is secure, Don Rossi," I said softly, resting my hands flat against the lapels of his suit.

Cassian smiled, his dark eyes burning with the same absolute, unyielding devotion that had kept me breathing for fifteen years. He set his scotch glass on a nearby table, capturing my face in his scarred hands.

"The empire was secure the moment you put my ring on your finger, Elara," he promised, his thumbs brushing my cheekbones. "Everything else is just details."

He kissed me, slow and deep, as the Italian sun sank below the horizon, plunging Rome into the dark.

But for the first time in my entire life, the shadows didn't frighten me.

They belonged to us.

From there, I transferred to an unmarked freighter carrying black-market munitions to the port of Baltimore. The journey took four agonizing days. Four days of suffocating silence in a windowless steel cabin, reviewing the encrypted data Leo had squeezed from Vanguard's servers before the connection died. Chapter 78*[Cassian]*Betrayal is a poison that doesn't just kill the victim; it rots the very foundation of the house they stand in. I stared at the black screen, the silence in the war room stretching so tight it threatened to snap the air in half. The remaining Capos of the Five Families were looking around the room, their eyes wide with sudden, terrifying suspicion. The men they had bled with, drank with, and sworn oaths with could be Pantheon sleepers. The enemy wasn't an armada sailing across the Atlantic. The enemy was standing right next to them, holding an assault rifle. "Clear the room," I growled, my voice a low, vibrating rumble of absolute menace. Nobody moved. The shock had paralyzed them. "I said clear the damn room!" I roared, slamming my fists onto the obsidian table. The impact cracked the glass holographic interface. The Capos didn't hesitate a second time. They scrambled toward the heavy steel doors, desperate to escape the wrath of the King. Matteo hesitate

Chapter 77*[Elara]*Silence in the aftermath of violence is the loudest sound on earth. The stealth transport tore through the stormy sky over the Atlantic Ocean, moving at hypersonic speeds back toward Rome. The cargo hold was freezing, vibrating with the sheer power of the engines, but the tension radiating off Cassian generated enough heat to warm the entire cabin. He hadn't sat down since we extracted from the Apex Tower. He stood near the open cockpit door, staring out into the black clouds, his jaw locked so tight I could see the muscles feathering in his cheek. Nine sat perfectly still on the metal bench opposite me, cleaning his weapons with terrifying, robotic efficiency. I leaned my head back against the cold fuselage, closing my eyes. My crimson gown was in tatters, the hem ruined by concrete dust and blood. Every muscle in my body ached, a deep, bone-weary exhaustion that begged me to sleep. But sleep was a vulnerability I couldn't afford. "Sterling was a messenger,"

Chapter 76*[Cassian]*Falling through a collapsing skyscraper is not a clean drop. It is a violent, chaotic tumble through a blender of jagged steel, exploding concrete, and razor-sharp rebar. I locked my arms around Elara, pulling her flush against my chest, twisting my body in mid-air to ensure my back took the brunt of the impact. The heavy Kevlar plating beneath my tuxedo absorbed a brutal strike from a falling concrete slab. My ribs screamed in protest, but I didn't loosen my grip. We crashed through the ceiling of the seventy-ninth floor. The Vanguard mercenaries waiting below had triggered the charges perfectly, blowing out the structural supports. The ceiling caved in, crushing the staging area they had prepared. We hit the floor hard, sliding across a thick layer of pulverized drywall and shattered glass. The impact knocked the wind out of me, a violent explosion of white light bursting behind my eyes. I rolled onto my back, instinctively shielding Elara as a massive se

I tapped the microscopic sensor behind my ear, activating the specialized contact lenses resting over my eyes. The pitch-black room instantly flared into a crisp, glowing green.I looked down. Sterling was dead. Cassian had put two bullets through his chest the second the lights cut out. But the billionaire’s final, hysterical laugh still haunted the air."Mamma! Papa!" Leo’s voice screamed through the encrypted comms, completely stripped of his usual calm. "Get out of there! The Vanguard troops in the building weren't the primary security!
