Chapter 36
**[Elara]**
Peace is a fragile glass floor. You can walk on it for years, admiring the view, but you never truly forget the drop waiting beneath your feet.
The grand ballroom of the Rossi estate was flooded with golden light from the towering crystal chandeliers. Tonight marked the five-year anniversary of the Citadel’s fall. The Dons of the Five Families, politicians, and European elites milled about the room, sipping vintage champagne and laughing.
It was a flawless display of absolute power disguised as high society.
I stood near the sweeping marble staircase, watching the room. I wore a backless emerald gown that pooled around my heels, a diamond-encrusted Viper coiled around my left wrist a gift from Cassian.
"You're scanning the exits again."
Cassian stepped up beside me, handing me a flute of champagne. He wore a midnight-blue tuxedo tailored so perfectly it looked like armor. His dark hair was brushed back, a few stubborn strands falling over his forehead. He looked relaxed, commanding the room without even raising his voice.
But I saw the subtle shift of his eyes. He was scanning the crowd right along with me.
"Old habits," I murmured, accepting the glass. I took a slow sip, my gaze tracking Moretti as the younger Don aggressively flirted with a senator's daughter near the ice sculpture. "Moretti brought three extra guards tonight. Unsanctioned."
Cassian didn't even look in Moretti's direction. "I know. Matteo already disarmed them at the gate. They're currently sitting in a holding room drinking tap water while their boss drinks my thousand-dollar champagne."
I let out a soft laugh, leaning my shoulder against his arm.
"You run a very tight ship, Don Rossi," I teased.
"I have a very demanding queen," he replied smoothly, turning his head to press a warm, fleeting kiss against my bare shoulder. "Where is Leo?"
"Upstairs in the nursery. Lily is reading him to sleep. I doubled the detail on the east wing just to be safe."
Cassian nodded, his jaw relaxing slightly at the mention of our son being secured.
Before he could pull me onto the dance floor, Matteo stepped out from the shadowed alcove near the kitchen doors. The Capo’s face was pale. The jovial atmosphere of the gala seemed to evaporate entirely around him as he walked briskly toward us.
Cassian’s posture shifted instantly. The relaxed husband vanished; the apex predator took his place.
"What is it?" Cassian demanded quietly as Matteo approached.
"A package, Boss," Matteo said, keeping his voice dangerously low so the surrounding guests wouldn't hear. "It bypassed the perimeter checkpoints. Security didn't flag it. It was just sitting on the desk in your private study."
My blood turned to ice.
Nobody bypassed the Rossi estate security. The biometric scanners, the armed patrols, the thermal drones it was impenetrable. To leave a package in Cassian’s private study meant someone had walked right past a hundred armed men like a ghost.
"Evacuate the ballroom," Cassian ordered immediately, his hand instinctively dropping toward the concealed holster beneath his tuxedo jacket. "Lock down the nursery. Nobody gets near my son."
"Wait," I said, catching Cassian’s wrist. I looked at Matteo. "Was it addressed to the Don?"
Matteo swallowed hard, avoiding Cassian's furious glare to look directly at me. "No, Donna. It has your name on it. Your old name."
The glass of champagne slipped from my fingers. It shattered against the marble floor, the sharp sound drawing the attention of several nearby guests.
Cassian didn't care about the guests. He grabbed my hand, his dark eyes fierce and protective. "We go together. Matteo, secure the house."
We left the ballroom, taking the private servant corridors to avoid the crowd. The air grew colder the deeper we moved into the secure wing of the estate.
Cassian kicked the heavy oak door of his study open, sweeping the room with a drawn pistol. The study was empty. The fire crackled innocently in the hearth.
Sitting precisely in the center of Cassian’s massive mahogany desk was a small, matte-black wooden box.
I walked slowly toward the desk. My heart hammered a frantic, sickening rhythm against my ribs. I recognized the wood. Ash wood. The Guild used to issue contracts in boxes exactly like this one.
"Don't touch it," Cassian growled, grabbing a pair of tactical gloves from a drawer. "It could be rigged with a localized explosive or a contact nerve agent."
"It's not rigged," I whispered, staring at the box. "It's a message."
I didn't wait for the gloves. I reached out and flipped the brass latch. The lid popped open.
Lying on a bed of dark crimson velvet was a single, silver bullet.
Carved into the side of the casing was a deeply intricate, microscopic etching of a viper. But the snake’s head was severed, neatly separated from its body.
Tucked beneath the bullet was a folded piece of heavy cardstock.
Cassian stepped up beside me, his jaw locked in a terrifying clench as he stared at the silver bullet. I pulled the note from the velvet and unfolded it with trembling fingers.
There were only four words written in elegant, flowing black ink.
*You missed one, Viper.*
The air was violently sucked from my lungs. The room spun.
"Elara," Cassian commanded softly, gripping my shoulders to steady me. "Who is it? Who the hell breached my house?"
I stared at the severed snake on the bullet.
Five years ago, I thought I had burned the Guild to the ground. I thought I had executed every handler, every master, and every apprentice who knew my true identity. But the silver bullet was a calling card I hadn't seen since I was a teenager bleeding on a training mat.
"He’s alive," I breathed, my voice entirely hollow.
Cassian grabbed the note, reading the four words. His obsidian eyes turned completely black with lethal intent. "Who?"
I looked up at my husband, the terrifying, icy detachment of the assassin violently overriding the warmth of the mother I had become.
"The man who taught me how to kill."

Chapter 52**[Elara]**"I didn't use a brute-force algorithm," Leo muttered, shifting his weight under his father’s heavy, expectant stare. "That would have tripped the silent alarms in Matteo’s quarters. I used a mirrored latency spoof."We were still standing in the subterranean vault. The heavy steel door was locked behind us, sealing us inside the syndicate’s most classified room. Cassian had pulled a high-back titanium stool from the corner, sitting down with his arms crossed over his bare chest. He wasn't scolding our son like a typical father catching a teenager sneaking out. He was debriefing him. "A mirrored spoof," Cassian repeated, his tone dangerously neutral. He arched a dark eyebrow. "You bounced a fake IP address off the internal servers to trick the biometric scanner into thinking it was running a routine diagnostic."Leo nodded, a spark of defiant pride briefly cutting through his guilt. "I coded the bypass script on a localized flash drive. When the optic laser sca

Chapter 51[Elara]Silence in a house with a thirteen-year-old boy is rarely a sign of peace. It is usually the gestation period of a catastrophe.I woke at 2:00 AM. The Tuscan villa was wrapped in the profound, heavy quiet of the countryside. Beside me, Cassian was deeply asleep, his broad back rising and falling in a steady, comforting rhythm.I didn't wake him. I slipped out from under the Egyptian cotton sheets, my bare feet making absolutely no sound on the cool hardwood floor. I pulled a silk robe over my shoulders and walked down the sweeping hallway toward Leo’s room. The door was cracked open. The bed was empty.A cold, familiar prickle of adrenaline washed over the back of my neck. I didn't panic. The perimeter alarms were silent. Nine’s invisible watch was unbroken. If a threat had breached the grounds, the house would be screaming. This wasn't an intrusion. This was an excursion.I moved through the dark house, letting the dormant instincts of the Viper guide me. I didn't
Epilogue - The King's Shadow
Chapter 50**[Elara]**Peace does not mean a lack of vigilance. It simply means you finally have something worth watching the horizon for. Ten years had passed since the Colosseum. Ten years of unbroken, quiet dominance. We hadn't just rebuilt the Rossi empire; we had fundamentally changed the tectonic plates of the underworld. We ruled not through the terror of ghosts, but through absolute, unyielding economic and strategic supremacy. I stood on the wraparound terrace of our private villa nestled deep in the rolling hills of Tuscany. The late afternoon sun bathed the endless vineyards in a rich, liquid gold. A gentle breeze tugged at the hem of my linen dress. I leaned against the warm stone balustrade, swirling a glass of deep red wine, watching the scene unfolding on the manicured lawn below. Cassian sat at a heavy wrought-iron table beneath the shade of an ancient olive tree. A chessboard rested between him and our thirteen-year-old son. Leo was the spitting image of his fath
The Weight of the Crown
Chapter 49**[Cassian]**The Colosseum was a graveyard of ambition. I looked down at the bodies of the seven cartel bosses. Men who had ruled vast, untouchable empires across the globe, now bleeding out in the dirt of a dead arena. They had tried to put a price tag on the Rossi bloodline, and they paid the ultimate toll for their arrogance. The silence of the Roman night was thick, broken only by the distant wail of police sirens responding to the brief, suppressed gunfire. "Matteo," I spoke quietly into my radio. "Deploy the cleanup crews. Erase the bodies. Sanitize the ruins. I don't want a single shell casing left for the authorities to find."*"Understood, Boss,"* Matteo replied, his voice betraying a profound relief. The Capos had expected a bloodbath that would decimate our ranks; instead, Elara’s ghosts had surgically removed the threat without a single Rossi casualty. I turned to my wife. Elara stood rigidly near the center of the arena, her eyes locked on the dark tunnel
The Bait and the Trap
Chapter 48**[Elara]**An invitation to the Roman Colosseum at midnight is not a diplomatic gesture. It is a death sentence. Yet, when the Don of the Rossi Syndicate publicly challenges the heads of the seven global cartels to a parley on neutral, historic ground, pride dictates they must attend. To refuse would be to admit cowardice to their own soldiers. Cassian knew exactly how to manipulate the arrogance of men. The ancient amphitheater was bathed in shadows. The modern spotlights that usually illuminated the ruins for tourists had been systematically disabled by Rossi hackers. Only the pale silver light of the half-moon cut through the crumbling stone arches. I stood beside Cassian in the center of the arena floor, the exact spot where gladiators had bled and died two thousand years ago. I wasn't wearing a ballgown. I wore full tactical armor. My hair was braided back tightly, twin ceramic blades strapped to my thighs, and a heavy submachine gun slung across my chest. Beside

Chapter 47**[Cassian]**The Rome penthouse was entirely silent, save for the rhythmic, heavy thud of my boots pacing the length of the war room. I looked at the heavy cardstock photograph resting on the center of the mahogany table. The red crosshair superimposed over my son’s chest felt like a physical knife twisting deep in my gut. Matteo stood near the reinforced door, his assault rifle slung over his chest, his face pale. The Capo had seen me angry, but he had never seen me like this. This wasn't anger. It was a cold, apocalyptic fury that demanded a sacrifice to be satiated. The heavy door opened. Elara walked into the room. She wore the same dark combat gear she had worn to the textile factory in Milan. Her face was an impenetrable mask of absolute ice. She didn't look at Matteo. She walked straight to the table and stared down at the photograph. "Did you kill him?" I asked, my voice a dangerous, low vibration in the quiet room. "No," Elara replied, not looking up. "I let
