The girl with mismatched wings didn't speak. She stood at the edge of the golden light, watching Riven with eyes that still hadn't settled on a color, gold bleeding into black and back again like something being fought over just beneath the surface.

Riven didn't move either. Not out of fear — he'd never been much good at fear, not after eighteen years of learning that fear rarely changed an outcome, only how much you suffered on the way to it — but out of the same instinct that had kept him alive through every group home and every foster placement that hadn't wanted him around for long. Watch first. Understand the shape of the thing before you touch it.

[Would you like to select this Hero?]

The prompt hovered beside her, patient and unbothered, as if the System hadn't just flagged her arrival as an anomaly less than a minute ago.

"Not yet," Riven murmured.

He focused on her instead, the way he'd focus on a locked door he intended to eventually open. The itch behind his eyes sharpened into something closer to pressure, a held breath waiting to be let out. His Talent, he was starting to understand, didn't work by asking permission. It worked by wanting to know.

[Identification Activating...]

[Target: Unnamed Hero Candidate]

[Analyzing...]

The gray mist around them dimmed slightly, as though the world itself were narrowing its attention down to the two of them and nothing else.

[Race: Angel (Partial) / Fallen Angel (Partial)]

[WARNING: Dual Bloodline Detected]

[This combination is classified as INCOMPATIBLE under standard Racial Bloodline Protocols.]

[Anomaly Confirmed.]

Riven read the words twice. Then a third time, slower, letting them settle.

He'd never studied bloodline theory in depth — nobody handed a foster kid from Ohio a copy of Racial Compatibility and You before shoving him through a summoning circle — but he'd absorbed enough scattered fragments from the endless stream of leaked reports and half-credible forum threads that clogged every corner of the internet back on Earth to know the basic rule everyone agreed on: bloodlines from opposing origins didn't sit together in one body. One devoured the other, or the vessel tore itself apart trying to hold both. It was one of the few things that seemed to hold true across a thousand years of documented Lord history.

And yet here she was. Standing. Breathing. Not tearing herself apart.

"That's not supposed to be possible," Riven said quietly, more to himself than to her.

For the first time, something flickered across her face — not quite a smile, not quite a wince. Somewhere between the two, like she'd heard that exact sentence more times than she could count, in whatever fragmented existence she'd had before this moment, and had never once found it useful information.

[Hero Potential: Unknown — Insufficient Data]

[Combat Capability: Extremely Low]

[Hidden Skill Detected: ???]

That last line caught his attention harder than the bloodline warning had. A Hero with no combat rating worth mentioning, and a skill even the System itself couldn't read. Two mysteries stacked on top of each other, wrapped inside a girl who, by every rule Riven understood, shouldn't exist in the first place.

He turned the notification over in his mind, the way he used to turn over a bad grade or a landlord's unfair notice, looking for the seam where the wording gave more away than the person who wrote it intended. Insufficient Data wasn't the same as No Data. It meant the System had tried to measure her and failed, not that there was nothing there to measure. A thousand years of accumulated Lord knowledge, and whatever machinery ran underneath all these floating text boxes still couldn't put a number on what she was. That alone told him more about her potential ceiling than any actual number could have.

Anyone chasing power for its own sake would have looked at "Combat Capability: Extremely Low" and moved on without a second thought. There would be other Heroes. Stronger ones. Ones that didn't come with question marks where their strengths should be.

Riven didn't move on.

He'd spent his whole life being the thing other people looked past because he didn't come with an obvious use attached — no family name, no talent worth bragging about, no story anyone wanted to invest time in. He knew, better than almost anyone standing in this gray nowhere ever could, that "currently weak" and "worthless" were not the same word. Foster families had looked at him the same way Lords apparently looked at Elarys: a line of red flags where a resume should be, easier to pass over than to understand.

"How many times?" he asked her.

She didn't pretend not to understand the question. "I've lost count," she said. "Enough that I stopped expecting anyone to stay long enough to ask my name first."

"I'm not asking because I feel sorry for you," Riven said, before she could read it that way. "I'm asking because a warning label isn't the same thing as a verdict. Everyone who walked away from you did the easy math. I'd rather do the correct one."

Something in her posture shifted at that — not relief, not quite, but the loosening of a muscle that had been braced for a long time without realizing it.

"What's your name?" he asked.

She blinked, as if the question surprised her more than the bloodline warning had surprised him. "I don't have one," she said. Her voice was quiet, careful, like she wasn't fully sure she was allowed to use it. "Heroes are named. Usually. By the Lord who selects them."

"You've done this before," he said. Not quite a question.

"I've been offered before," she corrected. "No one's selected me before."

That told him almost everything he needed to know without a single additional System prompt. Other Lords had stood exactly where he was standing, seen the same warning label, and walked away from her. Maybe more than once. Maybe many times, if the Ethereal Space recycled candidates the way he suspected it might.

Riven felt something settle in his chest, quiet and certain, the same feeling he used to get right before making a decision nobody else in the room agreed with.

"Elarys," he said.

She tilted her head. "What?"

"Your name. Elarys." He didn't know where it came from, exactly — it simply arrived, whole, the way the right word sometimes did when he was solving a problem other people had already given up on. "Unless you'd rather choose your own."

For a long moment she said nothing, wings shifting slightly behind her — one white feather catching the golden light, one black feather swallowing it whole.

"Elarys," she repeated, testing the shape of it in her mouth. "...I like it."

[Would you like to select Hero: Elarys?]

"Yes," Riven said, and this time there was no hesitation in it at all.

[Hero Selected: Elarys]

[Race: Angel (Partial) / Fallen Angel (Partial)]

[Bloodline Stability: Unstable]

[Recommendation: Bloodline Assimilation required before combat deployment.]

Riven's eyes narrowed at the word unstable. An unstable bloodline wasn't just an inconvenience — if the fragments of theory he half-remembered were accurate, it meant her body was actively losing the fight to hold both bloodlines in balance, a slow-motion collapse that would only get worse the longer it went unaddressed. Whatever she was, whatever she could become, she needed stabilizing before any of it mattered.

Which meant he needed resources he didn't currently have.

[System Notice: As a newly awakened Lord, you are entitled to one Starting Item, provided by Humanity's 100 strongest Lords.]

[Please state your request.]

Riven's mind moved fast, running through everything he half-knew about bloodlines, stability, and the handful of resources that a thousand years of human civilization had apparently standardized into something reliable enough to request on demand.

"Basic Bloodline Assimilation Stones," he said.

There was a pause — longer than any of the previous System responses had taken, as though the request were being relayed somewhere far beyond the gray mist, to a hundred people he would never meet and might never even learn the names of.

[Request Received.]

[The 100 Strongest Lords of Humanity have reviewed your request.]

[Consensus: One stone is considered insufficient for the stated purpose.]

[Adjusted Reward: 2 Basic Bloodline Assimilation Stones]

Riven let out a breath he hadn't realized he was holding. Somewhere out there, a hundred people who'd spent a thousand years clawing their way to the edge of Level 100 without ever crossing it had looked at his single stone request and decided, without needing to be asked twice, that it wasn't enough. It was such a small thing — barely a decision to them, probably — and yet it told him something important about the world he'd just entered. Humanity, up here at the top, wasn't hoarding what it knew. Not entirely. Not from someone honest enough to ask for the right thing.

Two smooth, pale stones materialized in the air in front of him, humming faintly with the same golden resonance that had bled through the mist when he'd confirmed his race.

He picked one up. It was warmer than he expected, and heavier — dense in a way that had nothing to do with its size.

"Elarys," he said. "Hold still."

She did, wings tensing but not retreating, watching him with an expression caught somewhere between wariness and something that looked almost like hope, an emotion she clearly hadn't had many chances to practice.

[Applying Basic Bloodline Assimilation Stone...]

[Target: Elarys]

[Stabilizing Dual Bloodline...]

[Bloodline Conflict Resolved: Angel / Fallen Angel]

[Bloodline Stability: Unstable → Stable]

The golden light around her flared, then steadied, and for the first time since she'd formed out of the fog, her wings settled into stillness — the white one gleaming clean and untroubled, the black one no longer fighting for space beside it, simply there, accepted, part of a whole rather than a war.

[Hidden Skill Update: ??? → Partially Revealed]

[Skill Name: Fragment Unknown — "...ith of the Unmade"]

[Elarys has gained 2 Skills.]

Riven read the fragmented skill name twice, then a third time, and felt something in his chest that wasn't quite excitement and wasn't quite unease — the specific, electric feeling of standing at the edge of something too big to see all at once. Ith of the Unmade. Whatever word belonged in front of those letters, the System still couldn't fully render it, even after stabilizing the bloodline that had been suppressing it. That wasn't a minor skill hiding behind a placeholder. That was something the world itself hadn't finished deciding how to name.

He filed the fragment away carefully, the way he filed away everything he didn't yet understand, and reached for the second stone.

"This one's mine," he said, and pressed it against his own chest before Elarys could ask why.

[Applying Basic Bloodline Assimilation Stone...]

[Target: Riven Ashford]

[Angel Affinity: 90 → 100]

[Absolute Loyalty Threshold Reached: Angel Race]

Warmth spread through him, gentle and total, nothing like the sharp pressure of his Talent awakening earlier. It felt less like gaining something new and more like a lock clicking into a place that had always been shaped to receive it.

[Barracks Split Detected.]

[Cause: Hero possesses dual Racial Bloodline (Angel / Fallen Angel). Barracks ecosystem has expanded to accommodate both racial lines.]

[Angel Barracks Established.]

[Fallen Angel Barracks Established.]

[Normal Unit Summon Rate Increased: 10/day → 20/day]

Riven read the explanation twice, and the shape of it clicked into place easily enough once he saw it spelled out. A normal Hero anchored one racial line, and one Barracks grew out of that anchor. Elarys, carrying two stabilized bloodlines instead of one, had apparently done the job of two Heroes at once — splitting his single starting Barracks into a matched pair, each one drawing from a different half of her.

Riven allowed himself a small, satisfied breath. Two barracks from one anomaly. Twice the daily summons other new Lords would be starting with, all because he'd looked past a warning label everyone else had apparently walked away from.

"You didn't have to do that," Elarys said quietly, flexing her once-unstable wings, testing them like she still couldn't quite believe they'd stopped fighting each other. "Most Lords wouldn't have."

"Most Lords aren't me," Riven said, and meant it without a trace of arrogance — just a plain statement of fact, the same way he'd have pointed out that the sky was gray instead of blue.

The mist around them shivered one final time, and a last line of text unfolded, calm and final, closing the door on the Ethereal Space behind them.

[Preparations Complete.]

[Transferring Lord and Hero to Lord Space...]

[Grace Period Beginning: 7 Days]

The gray world dissolved into gold, then into green, then into wind — real wind, carrying the smell of grass and river water and something distantly, impossibly like home — and Riven Ashford opened his eyes for the second time that day, standing at last on ninety-seven square kilometers of land that belonged to no one but him.

The hills weren't a hologram anymore. They rolled out in every direction under a sky the color of late afternoon, tall grass bending in slow waves toward a river that caught the light like hammered silver a few hundred meters downslope. Somewhere past the treeline to the north, birds he didn't recognize called out to each other in voices that weren't quite bird voices, and the air itself felt thicker than Earth's, charged with something he had no name for yet but that made the hair on his arms stand up all the same.

A pale stone marker stood a short distance ahead of them, unassuming and about waist-high, humming with the same low golden resonance he'd felt during his awakening.

[Lord Hall (Level 1) Established]

[Barracks (Level 1) Established]

[Starting Gold: 200]

[Population: 1]

[Grace Period Active — Space Beast Hordes and Dungeons Disabled for 7 Days]

Elarys stood beside him, wings catching the light of an actual sun for the first time, both feathers — white and black alike — settling into something that looked, for the first time since he'd met her, almost peaceful.

"It's real," she said quietly, like she still hadn't quite let herself believe it.

"It is," Riven agreed. He looked out over the hills that were now, somehow, his responsibility — ninety-seven square kilometers of grass and forest and river that a thousand years of other Lords had never gotten to call their own, sized by luck he hadn't earned and populated by exactly one Hero everyone else had thrown away. Seven days before the world started trying to kill him in earnest. Seven days he couldn't afford to waste a single hour of, let alone a whole one.

He turned back to the Lord Hall marker before he let himself think about rest.

[Unit Summoning Available]

[Angel Barracks: 10/day]

[Fallen Angel Barracks: 10/day]

[Summon Cost: 1 Gold per Unit]

If the allotment reset daily, then every day he didn't spend it was a day gone for good — no carrying it forward, no doubling up later to make up for lost time. Twenty gold out of two hundred wasn't nothing, but it was a trade he'd make every single day without hesitation. He wasn't going to let the very first day of his Grace Period slip by on nothing.

"Summon," he said.

Light bloomed from the Barracks structure in two distinct columns, gold on one side and deep dusk-gray on the other, folding themselves into twenty kneeling figures who rose the instant they finished forming.

[20 Units Summoned]

[Race: Angel (10) / Fallen Angel (10)]

[Loyalty: Absolute]

[Gold: 200 → 180]

[Population: 1 → 21]

[Awaiting Orders, Lord.]

It was late enough, and Riven tired enough, that giving twenty strangers detailed orders in the dark seemed like a good way to waste half of what they could accomplish tomorrow through simple exhaustion-driven mistakes. "Rest tonight," he told them instead. "Set a watch rotation among yourselves — I want eyes on the treeline in case anything decides my territory looks appetizing before I've built a wall around it. Real work starts at first light."

They dispersed without argument, a few peeling off toward the treeline immediately, the rest settling into loose, watchful formation near the Lord Hall. Only then did Riven let himself sit down in the grass, the weight of the day finally catching up to him all at once.

Elarys settled down beside him, wings folding, watching the same dark treeline her own units now guarded.

"Get some sleep," she said. "I'll take first watch."

Riven wanted to argue — some old, stubborn instinct that said the person in charge didn't get to rest before everyone else did — but his body had already made the decision for him days before his mind caught up to it. "Wake me if anything moves," he said, and let his eyes close.

Tomorrow, the real work would start. Tonight, for the first time in longer than he could remember, he didn't have to watch the dark alone.

Riven woke a second time that morning, though he hadn't remembered falling asleep at all. He'd meant only to sit down against the base of the new tower for a moment while the repair crews worked, and the next thing he knew Elarys was crouched beside him, one hand steady on his shoulder."You've been out for twenty minutes," she said. "I let you have them.""Twenty minutes I didn't budget for." He pushed himself upright, joints stiff in a way that had nothing to do with injury and everything to do with a night that had ended in combat instead of sleep. Around him, the field told its own story — scorched grass in wide black patches, the wall's damaged section already climbing back toward full height under a dozen busy hands, and the fountain at the center of the yard still pulsing its slow, steady gold.[Wall Integrity: 88% → 94%]"Faster than I expected," Riven said, watching stone knit itself seamless under the crew's work."Development Level thirty buys you a faster repair crew," Ela
