Riven woke on Day Five already thinking about the empty list sitting in his Lord Network panel.
He checked the status near the Lord Hall marker first, the same habit he'd built into every morning since arriving.
[Lord Hall (Level 2)]
[Development Level: 14]
[Population: 81]
[Gold: 70]
[Grace Period: 3 Days Remaining]
Three days. He pulled up the Barracks interface next, the same second move he made every morning without fail.
[Unit Summoning Available]
[Angel Barracks: 10/day]
[Fallen Angel Barracks: 10/day]
[Summon Cost: 1 Gold per Unit]
"Summon," he said.
[20 Units Summoned]
[Race: Angel (10) / Fallen Angel (10)]
[Loyalty: Absolute]
[Gold: 70 → 50]
[Population: 81 → 101]
One hundred and one now — more people than every foster home and group placement he'd ever lived in combined, all of them looking to him for direction instead of the other way around. He let that number sit for a moment, then turned to a problem that had been nagging at him since the night before: fifty gold wasn't much to work with, and every Blueprint trade on the Network was going to want either gold or resources he couldn't afford to bleed dry.
He looked toward Elarys, wings folded loosely at her back, and an idea he'd been turning over since the boar hunt finally clicked into place.
"You can fly," he said. "How far, exactly?"
"Farther than anything on the ground can chase," she said. "Why?"
"Because my territory boundary doesn't have to be where my hunting stops." Riven had noticed it days ago without acting on it — the faint, invisible pressure at the edge of his Lord Space, the same pressure he'd felt near the eastern boundary while scouting. Past that edge, there was no more ground at all — his ninety-seven square kilometers simply ended, drifting in open space the same way every Lord's territory apparently did, untethered from anyone else's. Ground units had no way to survive out there, let alone reach it. But wings didn't need ground to fly through.
[Identification Activating...]
[Target: Territory Boundary — Beyond]
[Analysis: Open Void Beyond Boundary. Elevated Monster Activity — Higher Threat, Higher Yield.]
[Notable Species: Void-Touched Creatures — Gold Auto-Converts on Kill (Scaled to Level), Rare Material Drop Chance (~30%).]
Riven read it twice, the shape of an opportunity settling into place fast. Ground units were bound to his territory's pace, restricted to whatever a normal patrol could reach and return from in a day. But Elarys and every Angel-line and Fallen Angel-line unit under his command had wings. Nothing about that constraint applied to them.
"Take five Angel and five Fallen Angel," he said. "Rotate the group every six hours so nobody's flying out there exhausted. Hunt whatever's past the boundary and keep it running around the clock. I'll hold things down here."
Elarys nodded, already thinking ahead to the flight itself. "Gold, and a resource nobody else is using yet."
"Same principle as the iron vein," Riven said. "The advantage that's just sitting there for whoever bothers to look."
She gathered her ten without needing further instruction, five gold-armored and five iron-dark, wings unfurling in near-unison as they lifted off the training yard and cleared the treeline in seconds — faster and higher than any ground unit could have managed in an hour. Riven watched until they shrank to specks against the morning sky, then turned back to the work waiting for him on the ground.
The first rotation came back a little past midday, faster than he'd expected, one unit's armor scorched along one shoulder but nobody worse for it than that, already handing off to the second five-and-five before their wings had even finished folding.
[Hunt Report: Void-Touched Creatures Slain — 4]
[Gold Earned: 165]
[Items Acquired: Void Residue x1]
[Gold: 50 → 215]
[Hero EXP Gained: Elarys — 60]
[Hero Level: 1 → 3]
Riven blinked at that last line before he'd even finished reading the gold total. Heroes leveled differently than Units, he already knew that much, but he hadn't expected two levels from a single morning's hunt. Combat against something that actually threatened her, apparently, counted for a lot more than the boar hunts and training-yard drills that had carried her this far.
Riven turned the report over, noting the mechanic before he noted the number. The gold had converted the instant each creature died, scaled to whatever level it had been — no trade counter, no waiting on anyone else's price. The single Void Residue sitting in his inventory was the only material drop out of four kills, and even that had needed the System to roll in his favor.
"That's more than the mana crystal cave gave me in a full morning," Riven said, turning the number over with open satisfaction. "And it cost me nothing but ten units who were flying anyway. You're up two levels, on top of it."
"They weren't easy kills," Elarys said, glancing over the scorched unit's shoulder with a critical eye. "Whatever lives out there, it's stronger than anything inside your boundary. Strong enough to actually push me, apparently. We were careful. Next time, we bring more than ten."
"Next time," Riven said, "keep someone close enough to fly an injured unit back to the fountain fast. Don't wait and hope nobody needs it."
This wasn't a one-time fix. It was a standing order now — a second hunting ground, one only his winged units could reach, sitting just past land everyone else assumed was the only thing that mattered. Gold on every kill, and roughly one material drop for every three or four — good odds, as long as he kept sending units out often enough for the odds to matter.
"The second five-and-five is already out there," he said, nodding toward the empty sky where they'd vanished minutes ago. "When they're back in six hours, you go out again with a fresh five-and-five. No gaps. Someone's always in the air."
With that problem solved for now, he turned to the panel he'd been waiting all night to open again.
[Lord Communication Network]
[Nearby Lords Detected: 6]
Six names populated the list this morning, where there had been none the night before. Riven scanned through them quickly, Identification humming faintly at the edge of his awareness even though it had no target to lock onto yet — just names, levels, and a short line of public information each Lord had apparently chosen to share.
One entry caught his attention immediately.
[Lord: Kessa Dorn — Level 3 — Race: Dwarf]
[Public Note: Trading surplus Blueprints for Iron and Timber. Open to offers.]
Riven opened a message window without hesitating.
"I have iron and timber to spare. Looking for a Training Ground Blueprint if you have one. What would you want for it?"
The reply came faster than he expected, blunt and businesslike in a way that told him this wasn't Kessa's first trade.
"Happen to have a spare Training Ground Blueprint from an old trade. 60 Iron, 40 Timber, and it's yours. Deal?"
Riven checked his stockpile. More than enough of both, and the price was lower than he'd braced for.
"Deal," he said aloud, confirming the trade through the panel.
[Trade Complete]
[Resources Sent: Iron x60, Timber x40]
[Item Received: Training Ground Blueprint]
Elarys leaned over his shoulder, reading the exchange with open curiosity. "That was fast."
"Everyone benefits from a fast trade," Riven said. "Slow ones just give the other side time to change their mind." Trade, apparently, worked the same out here as it did on Earth — speed and a fair price beat clever negotiation nine times out of ten.
He scrolled back through the remaining five names before closing the panel, curiosity getting the better of him. Most offered nothing useful yet — a Lord two Tiers below him looking for basic food resources, another advertising Hero Summoning Stones at a price Riven couldn't afford to match this early. Nothing else worth acting on tonight, but he made mental note of who was trading what before closing the panel.
He stared at the trade log for a moment, turning the whole exchange over in his mind. Wings had paid for a Blueprint. The Blueprint had cost him almost nothing out of pocket. The Network wasn't just a convenience. It was a second economy sitting on top of his own territory, and between it and the open void past his boundary, he'd found two new sources of gold in a single morning that most Lords, if the rest of his territory was any indication, probably never thought to look for.
He walked to the open ground near the Barracks and pulled up the build option immediately.
[Building Available: Training Ground]
[Requires: Blueprint (Owned), Wood x40, Stone x50, Gold x25]
"Build it," he said.
[Materials Consumed: Wood x40, Stone x50]
[Gold Spent: 25]
[Gold: 215 → 190]
[Training Ground Construction Complete]
[Development Level: 14 → 18]
A wide, flattened yard of packed earth appeared where empty ground had been, ringed by simple wooden racks already hung with practice weapons — blunted swords, training spears, a row of shields stacked against one post. Riven walked its length, satisfied. Weapon Mastery had already proven itself worth chasing. A dedicated space for it meant faster gains across the whole rotation instead of units drilling wherever there happened to be open grass.
He sent word through the ranks, and within the hour every unit not out hunting or gathering had cycled through the new yard at least once. Riven walked its length again in the early afternoon, watching pairs spar with blunted weapons under the eye of the same Angel-line unit who'd been teaching informally near the riverbank all week. She'd taken to the role without being asked, correcting stances with quiet, patient corrections instead of barked orders, and Riven made a mental note to check her aptitude the next chance he got. A good teacher was worth protecting from the front lines if he could manage it.
[Weapon Mastery Report: 34 Units Improved]
[Unit "Doran" reached Weapon Mastery Threshold — Skill Unlocked: Iron Stance]
Thirty-four in one morning, more than double the pace from the days before the yard existed. Riven watched the number and felt the same quiet satisfaction he'd started to associate with decisions that paid off exactly the way he'd hoped they would.
The afternoon brought a harder test. A hunting party returned early, moving fast, one unit supporting another who limped heavily on a leg that hadn't bent right in the fight.
[Identification Activating...]
[Target: Unit — Injury Assessment]
[Status: Fractured Leg, Bleeding]
"Fountain," Riven said immediately, and two units half-carried the injured woman toward the pale water without waiting for further instruction. She drank, and within seconds her posture straightened, weight settling back onto the leg like it had never been hurt at all.
[Debuff Removed: Fracture, Bleeding]
[Vitality Restored: Full]
"What hit her?" Riven asked the unit who'd helped her back.
"Something bigger than what we've fought so far," the unit said. "Big as a horse, maybe bigger. Stone-gray hide like it was carved instead of grown, tusks the length of my forearm, and it moved faster than something that size has any right to. It roared before it charged — not an animal sound, something closer to rock grinding on rock. We pulled back before it could finish what it started."
Riven's attention sharpened immediately. Not a threat he was willing to send an unprepared group after twice. "Show me where," he said, and gathered ten units — Angel and Fallen Angel both — before setting out himself.
The creature wasn't hard to find. It had followed the retreating hunters partway toward the treeline before losing interest, and now paced a wide clearing near the forest's edge, tusks longer than any boar's, hide a mottled gray-brown that looked more like stone than skin.
[Identification Activating...]
[Target: Unknown Creature]
[Species: Stonehide Charger]
[Threat Level: High]
[Suggested Approach: Ranged Softening Before Melee Engagement — Avoid Prolonged Frontal Contact]
High was a full step above anything they'd faced yet. Riven didn't send anyone in blind. "Spears and bows first," he said. "Wear it down before anyone gets close. Nobody engages until I say so."
Five units with improvised spears and two with hunting bows spread into a loose ring around the clearing, and the first volley struck home before the creature even registered the threat — three spear-throws catching its flank, arrows finding the softer hide behind its foreleg. It roared, a sound that shook loose birds from every tree in earshot, and charged the nearest spear-thrower with a speed that made Riven's stomach drop.
"Scatter and reset!" he shouted, and the units broke formation instantly, drawing the charge wide before it could connect with anyone. Two more volleys followed as it turned, slower now, blood matting the fur along one shoulder.
"Melee, now — flanks only," Riven called, and four units closed in together, blades finding the wounds the ranged attacks had already opened. It thrashed once, twice, catching one unit's shield with a glancing tusk-strike that sent her stumbling back, and for a half-second Riven's chest tightened the same way it had during the Iron-Hide Boar fight days ago. Then the creature's legs buckled, and it went down loud and heavy, shaking the ground with its fall. Unlike the unit who'd stumbled home with a fractured leg an hour earlier, this fight ended with nothing worse than a torn shield strap — no trip to the fountain needed.
[Unit EXP Gained: 15 (Distributed)]
[Achievement Unlocked: First High-Threat Kill]
[Item Acquired: Stonehide Pelt x1, Stonehide Tusk x2]
Riven crouched beside the fallen creature, running Identification over the materials before anyone touched them.
[Identification Activating...]
[Target: Stonehide Pelt]
[Material Grade: Above Average — Suitable for Reinforced Armor Crafting]
Another quiet gift, sitting right there for anyone who'd bothered to fight for it properly instead of running from a threat level marked High. He had his Blacksmith now, and a Blacksmith with actual materials worth working was worth more than one running on scrap iron alone.
By evening, the Development notification arrived without fanfare, the way the good ones always seemed to.
[Development Level: 18 → 20]
[New Building Types Unlocked: Wall (Basic), Watchpost]
Two more names to add to a growing list of things he couldn't build yet — no Blueprint for either sitting in his inventory, no trade lined up to fix that tonight. He pulled the Network back open before he let himself rest, scanning the remaining names for anyone advertising a Wall or Watchpost Blueprint. Nothing tonight. He sent a general request instead, the same kind Kessa Dorn's public note had used, offering surplus food and timber in exchange for either.
"You're still working," Elarys said, settling nearby as the fountain's light steadied into its evening glow.
"Three days doesn't leave room for waiting," Riven said. "If nobody bites tonight, someone will tomorrow. I'd rather have the offer sitting out there than waste a day I could've spent asking."
She didn't argue with that. She'd stopped arguing with most of his instincts by now, and Riven had noticed the shift without needing to comment on it directly.
Riven looked out over the training yard, the forge still glowing faintly from its second day of use, and the fountain's steady pulse lighting the clearing gold against the coming dark. One hundred and one people. A Training Ground bought through trade instead of luck. A High-threat kill that hadn't cost him a single permanent loss. And a Network with a standing offer now sitting on it, waiting for someone else to notice it the way he'd noticed Kessa Dorn's.
Three days left. He intended to use every hour of them.

Chapter 14: The Cost of Staying First
The Horde notification arrived before Brynhild's crew had finished the second wall section, cutting through the midday work with the same flat certainty every System message carried.[Space Beast Horde: Incoming][Estimated Arrival: Dusk][Difficulty Selection Required]Riven didn't slow his pace toward the Lord Hall. Level one through ten meant a Horde every single day, and he'd already built his morning around the assumption that today wouldn't be an exception just because yesterday's fight had been the hardest one yet."Hell," he said, the same word he'd chosen without hesitation two mornings ago. "Same as last time. Nothing about yesterday's difficulty told me to play this one safer.""Nothing about yesterday told you to play it harder, either," Elarys said, falling into step beside him. "You could hold at Hell for a while and just let the territory keep growing underneath it.""I could," Riven agreed. "But I've got a wall section that's already stronger than anything the Devourer
Chapter 13: The Weight of Loyalty
Riven waited until the following morning before he touched the Hero Summoning Stone again. Not out of hesitation — he'd made that mistake once already with the gauntlet and wasn't interested in repeating the pattern — but because a decision this size deserved a full day's rest behind it instead of the tail end of a Dungeon clear. Chapter 12: The Rift Below
They found it before noon, exactly where Elarys said it would be — a tear in the world near the southern edge of the territory, close enough to the boundary that the light around it looked wrong, thin and grey against the healthy green of everything else Riven had built. A ring of dead grass surrounded it in a perfect circle, nothing growing inside the border, as if the land itself had already decided the rift wasn't part of the territory anymore.[Identification Activating...][Target: Dungeon Entrance][Dungeon Name: Ashen Vault][Available Difficulties: Ordinary / Elite / Epic / Legendary][Estimated Duration Until Collapse: 24 Hours][Full Conquest Reward: Permanent Sub-Space Claim]Riven walked the circle once, hands behind his back, reading the rift the way he'd read the Horde composition the morning before. No hesitation in the act itself — Identification didn't need him to touch anything to answer, and he'd stopped pretending it did the moment the gauntlet proved it days ago.
Chapter 11: What Hell Left Behind
Riven woke a second time that morning, though he hadn't remembered falling asleep at all. He'd meant only to sit down against the base of the new tower for a moment while the repair crews worked, and the next thing he knew Elarys was crouched beside him, one hand steady on his shoulder."You've been out for twenty minutes," she said. "I let you have them.""Twenty minutes I didn't budget for." He pushed himself upright, joints stiff in a way that had nothing to do with injury and everything to do with a night that had ended in combat instead of sleep. Around him, the field told its own story — scorched grass in wide black patches, the wall's damaged section already climbing back toward full height under a dozen busy hands, and the fountain at the center of the yard still pulsing its slow, steady gold.[Wall Integrity: 88% → 94%]"Faster than I expected," Riven said, watching stone knit itself seamless under the crew's work."Development Level thirty buys you a faster repair crew," Ela
