I woke to the sound of rain against the warehouse roof.

The safe house was silent. Maya was asleep in the corner, her hand resting on a pistol. The contact—Kat—hadn't returned.

I sat up slowly. My shoulder ached. My head still throbbed from the night before. But the keys beneath my skin were calm. Resting.

I reached out with the network.

Faint pulses. Distant echoes. The Observers were out there. Waiting. Hiding. Dying.

And Viktor was the closest.

I pulled out the folder Maya had given me. Viktor's photo stared back at me. An old man with kind eyes and a weathered face. He ran a small bookstore in the city's historic district. A quiet life. A hidden purpose.

But he was marked. Alexander's men were closing in.

I stood up. Walked to the window. The rain blurred the city skyline.

"Can't sleep?" Maya's voice was soft.

"No. Too much to do."

She joined me at the window. "You're thinking about Viktor."

"He's running out of time. They all are."

"Then we move tonight." She handed me a coffee. "Kat has a car ready. She'll drop us near the bookstore. After that, we're on our own."

"Where will she go?"

"Somewhere far from here." Maya's smile was thin. "She's a survivor. She knows when to disappear."

I drank the coffee. It was bitter and strong. Perfect.

"Let's go."

---

The car dropped us three blocks from the bookstore.

Rain soaked through my jacket within seconds. The streets were empty. Dark. The kind of night that swallowed sound.

"Stay close," Maya whispered. "Watch the shadows."

I nodded. The keys pulsed beneath my skin, feeding me information. I could feel the minds around us. A few scattered drunks. A homeless man sleeping in a doorway. And something else. Something cold and watchful.

"We're being followed," I said.

"How many?"

"One. Maybe two. They're hanging back. Waiting."

Maya's hand moved to her pistol. "Keep walking. Don't react."

We walked. The bookstore was ahead, a small shop nestled between a bakery and a closed-down theater. The lights were off. The door was locked.

"We're here," I said.

"Can you sense him? Viktor?"

I reached out with the network. Felt for the familiar pulse of an Observer.

Nothing.

"He's not here."

Maya's face hardened. "Kat said he was here."

"Kat lied." I turned. The cold presence was closer now. "Or she was forced to lie."

The shadows moved.

Three figures emerged from the darkness. Black suits. Hidden earpieces. Professional killers.

"Maya, get down!"

I pushed her behind a parked car as the first shots rang out. Bullets ripped through the bookstore window. Glass shattered across the sidewalk.

I raised my hand. The keys blazed.

"Stop!"

Two of them froze. Their weapons clattered to the ground.

The third was different. Stronger. Trained to resist.

He kept coming.

I dove behind the car as his bullets ricocheted off the metal. Maya returned fire, forcing him back.

"He's shielded!" I shouted.

"I can see that!" She reloaded. "Can you break through?"

"I can try."

I closed my eyes. Reached out with everything I had. The keys burned. The network roared.

The third man's mind was a fortress. But I'd broken through fortresses before.

I pushed.

Harder. Deeper. Through the walls he'd built.

And I found something I didn't expect.

Fear. Pure, primal fear.

He wasn't just a soldier. He was a prisoner. Forced to serve Alexander. Forced to hunt me.

I pulled back.

"Kaelen!" Maya's voice was sharp. "What are you doing?"

I looked at the man. His gun was still raised. But his hands were shaking.

"I felt it," I said. "He doesn't want to do this."

"Of course he doesn't. He's a human being. But he'll still kill us if we give him a chance."

I stood up. Walked toward him.

The man's eyes went wide. "Stay back!"

"Or what? You'll shoot me?" I kept walking. "You'll kill me and go back to Alexander? Go back to being his puppet?"

"Shut up!"

"I know what he did to you. I know about your family. Your wife. Your daughter."

The man's face went pale. "How do you know that?"

"I can see it. In your mind. He's holding them hostage. Forcing you to serve him."

Tears streamed down the man's face. His gun dropped to the ground.

"Please," he whispered. "I don't want to hurt anyone. But if I don't do what he says..."

"I know." I reached out. Put my hand on his shoulder. "Help me. Help me stop him. And I'll save your family."

The man stared at me. Then he nodded slowly.

"Okay. I'll help."

Behind him, the other two men started to stir.

"We need to move," Maya said. "Where's Viktor?"

The man pointed down the street. "They moved him. An hour ago. Alexander's men took him to the old theater."

"The theater?"

"It's a front. Alexander's using it as a holding facility. He's been collecting Observers there. Keeping them alive. Breaking them."

I felt sick. "How many?"

"At least a dozen. Maybe more." The man's voice was hollow. "He's been torturing them for years. Trying to extract the network's secrets."

The keys burned beneath my skin. Rage. Pure, burning rage.

"Maya," I said. "I'm going in."

"I know."

"You don't have to come."

She smiled coldly. "Your mother would never forgive me if I let you die alone."

I turned toward the theater. The rain had stopped. The clouds were clearing.

Tonight, I would save Viktor.

Tonight, I would free the Observers.

Tonight, I would start taking back what was mine.

And God help anyone who got in my way.

The mountain road was treacherous. Hairpin turns. Steep drops. No guardrails.I drove the rusted pickup slowly, headlights cutting through the fog. The keys beneath my skin pulsed with each mile, guiding me forward like a compass pointing home. The cabin appeared at dawn.It was small. Wooden. Smoke rising from a stone chimney. Nestled in a clearing surrounded by ancient pines. Exactly the kind of place where nobody would think to look for a fugitive prince.I killed the engine. The kind of place where people came to forget their problems or create new ones.I walked in as Viktor Ross. The disguise was simple. A fake beard. Dark contacts. A scar painted on my cheek. Old leather jacket that smelled like cigarettes and cheap whiskey. I moved with a swagger I didn't feel, projecting confidence I didn't have. The bar was half-empty. A few drunks nursed their beers. A couple of tough-looking men played cards in the corner. The bartender was a big man with a shaved head and a scarred face.I walked to the counter. "I'm looking for Mira."The bartender's eyes narrowed. "Who's asking?""Viktor Ross. I have business with her.""Never heard of her." He picked up a glass and started wiping it. • The Escape from Below

Drake moved like a predator. He grabbed my arm and yanked me toward a wall of ancient symbols. His hand pressed against a carved stone, and the wall slid open, revealing a narrow passage."Through here. Now."I didn't argue. I dove into the darkness just as the first gunshots echoed from the staircase above. The passage was tight. Cold stone pressed against my shoulders on both sides. I could hear Drake behind me, his breathing steady and controlled."Keep moving," he growled. "They know the layout. They'll have men waiting at the other end.""How do you know?""Because I used to work for Alexander."I stopped."Keep moving!" Drake shoved me forward."You worked for Alexander?" I kept running, but my mind was racing. "That's how you know everything? You were one of them?""I was. Until he killed my brother." Drake's voice was flat. "Now I'm your best chance at survival. So shut up and run."---The passage opened into a wide tunnel. Sewage water rushed past our feet. The stench was ov

  • The First Observer

The white light faded slowly, leaving behind a world that wasn't quite right.I stood in a vast chamber. Stone walls. High ceilings. Torches flickered in iron brackets, casting dancing shadows across ancient symbols carved into every surface. The air was cold and still, heavy with the weight of centuries. My keys were gone.I looked down at my hands. The obsidian fragments had merged. Melted into my skin. I could feel them pulsing beneath the surface, alive and waiting."Welcome, Kaelen Blackwood."The voice came from everywhere and nowhere. Deep. Ancient. Resonant.I turned slowly. A figure stood at the center of the chamber. Tall. Cloaked in shadows. Its face was hidden, but its eyes burned with pale blue light."Who are you?""I am the first Observer. The one who bound himself to your bloodline a thousand years ago." The figure raised a hand. "You are the first of your line to reach this place since your father's death.""My father was here?""He was. Thirty years ago. He came seek
