Gold light cut through the ceiling.

Every chamber above them locked at once.

The sound traveled through the vault in four hundred twelve heavy impacts, close enough together to shake dust from the columns.

Noah was already moving toward the stairs. Jace followed until the Anchor binding tightened across his chest.

Seraphina put his left arm over her shoulders and kept moving.

By the time they reached the vault, gold walls had formed between chamber rows. Each wall carried a transfer number and a destination code too long for Breach Sight to finish before it changed.

Two masked figures appeared inside the farthest gold wall, half present and sharpened by each increase in seal progress. Their armor was clean, their movements synchronized, and their faces hidden behind mirrored masks.

One Collector raised a hand. Three chamber rows vanished behind gold, visible through Breach Sight but unreachable from the aisle.

"Local claimant," the nearer figure said. "Stand down. House Sunchain is correcting an unauthorized structural loss."

"People are not structural loss."

"That distinction is not present in the vault charter."

"Then your charter needs work."

The second Collector accelerated the seal.

Two of the seven cracked chambers stood open.

A man with dark hair and a scar crossing one eyebrow had dragged himself into the aisle. He wore the remains of a preservation wrap and held a broken section of chamber frame like a weapon.

Across from him, a woman knelt beside another open chamber, one hand pressed to the seal while pale light moved beneath her fingers.

Neither looked grateful.

"Which one of you belongs to Sunchain?" Lucas asked.

"No one," Noah said.

Lucas glanced at the Free Claim line between Noah and Jace. "That answer has a leash attached."

"It has a cost attached," Noah replied. "Learn the difference before you use the weapon."

Sophia did not look up from the chamber. "Argue after we keep the people inside from being transferred."

Her patient was awake behind the glass, eyes moving without the rest of the body. The gold seal had reached the person's throat.

The exchange contained no philosophy. Only a woman behind glass, another woman spending Health to delay a lock, and a man angry because both available choices looked like surrender.

"That was Sunchain's answer too."

Lucas's grip tightened around the broken frame. "I am not asking him to keep us forever. I am asking him to stop the transfer."

"Temporary ownership is still ownership while the lock is closed."

Noah stepped between them before the argument became physical. "Both of you are right about the part in front of you. That is how the menu works."
