Every Breath Costs
last update2026-08-03 02:47:56

The next breath drove it deeper.

Noah inhaled again, and the line between them tightened like wire pulled through bone.

FREE CLAIM DASHBOARD

Protected Person: Noah Venn.

Ownership Status: NONE.

Consent: ACTIVE.

Revocation Right: ACTIVE.

Legal Category: INVALID.

Maintenance Rate: 0.1 Charge per breath.

Available Charge: 0/140.

Fallback Cost: 1 Health per 10 breaths.

Heir's Claim Proficiency: 0%.

"That is obscene," Emma said.

She had one hand against Jace's throat and the other pressed flat to his chest, as if she could physically keep the next point of Health from leaving. Liam stood beside Noah, counting the flickers that crossed his arms whenever he tried to breathe more slowly.

"Noah," Emma said, "normal breaths. Do not hold them."

"He loses Health when I breathe."

"He loses more if your body destabilizes and the claim has to rebuild you."

"That sounds like something the System would say."

"It sounds like nursing. I understand the confusion."

Noah tried anyway.

His chest stopped moving. Frost spread beneath his skin almost immediately, white lines climbing from his collarbone toward his jaw.

IDENTITY STABILITY: 45% → 31%.

PRESERVED-STATE REVERSION: ACTIVE.

Jace caught the front of Noah's blanket. "Breathe."

Noah shook his head.

"That was not a suggestion."

"You do not get to command me."

"Good. Then consider it excellent advice from a man currently being stabbed by your lungs."

Noah let the breath out.

The frost retreated. Pain struck Jace hard enough to pull his vision sideways.

Health: 61/420 → 60/420.

Identity Stability: 31% → 44%.

Emma pushed him back against the folded coats. "You are done speaking."

"That seems medically ambitious."

Seraphina stood over the claim panel, reading every line as though one might become less ugly under sustained attention. "There should be an emergency guest classification. A protected dependent. A medical exception."

She opened the registry and entered the first request herself.

TEMPORARY MEDICAL GUEST STATUS

Applicant: Noah Venn.

Ownership Required: NO.

Protection Requested: YES.

Result: REJECTED.

Reason: Unowned heirs may not receive continuous claimant protection.

"Appeal it," Liam said.

She did.

HUMANITARIAN EXCEPTION REQUEST

Risk of Immediate Harm: CONFIRMED.

Consent of Protected Person: CONFIRMED.

Ownership Transfer: REFUSED.

Result: REJECTED.

Recommended Resolution:

Assign Owner.

End Protection.

Delete Unsupported Subject.

Nobody argued after that.

The evidence remained above them, clean and complete. The registry had reviewed pain, consent, and immediate danger, then returned the same three choices with better formatting.

Noah stared at the deletion line. "Pause the claim."

"No," Jace said.

"Ten seconds."

"No."

"Let it prove what happens."

"We already know."

"I need to."

Jace looked at him. Noah had been spoken for by chambers, files, recovery staff, and every person who thought survival gave them the right to decide the shape of it. Refusing him now would protect his body by repeating the method that broke everything else.

"Three seconds," Jace said.

Emma turned on him. "Absolutely not."

"Noah has revocation rights."

"He also has a nervous system held together by an illegal claim."

"Still his."

Noah lifted his hand.

FREE CLAIM PROTECTION

Protected Person requests voluntary suspension.

Duration: 00:00:03.

Confirm?

He confirmed.

The line between them vanished.

For one second, Noah looked relieved.

Then the room found him.

UNCLAIMED HEIR DETECTED.

Protection Status: NONE.

Legal Category: UNSUPPORTED.

DELETION AUTHORIZATION: 00:00:05.

Noah's outline broke at the shoulder. The edge of him disappeared, revealing the wall through a place where skin had been.

Emma swore.

Jace reactivated the claim before the countdown reached four.

FREE CLAIM RESTORED.

Health: 60/420 → 58/420.

Identity Stability: 44% → 39% → 47%.

HEIR'S CLAIM PROFICIENCY

0% → 6%.

Noah dropped to one knee. Liam caught him beneath both arms and kept him from hitting the marble.

For three seconds, Noah had been no one's responsibility. The System treated that as proof he should not exist. Jace watched him learn the difference between freedom and abandonment in real time, and hated that the machine had designed them to look identical. Noah had tested the rule because some part of him still hoped it might be less complete than the people enforcing it. The missing shoulder answered more honestly than any Collector.

Seraphina closed the rejected appeal. "It did not even attempt preservation."

"It attempted resolution," Jace said.

"By deleting the contradiction."

Noah looked at his shoulder after it returned. He touched the place twice, carefully, checking that the hand still belonged to the person using it.

"I thought there might be a pause," he said. "Something between protected and gone."

"There should be," Liam replied.

"There isn't," Seraphina said.

The Safe Zone barrier pulsed beyond the doors.

MANUAL TERRITORY BRIDGE

Time Remaining: 00:04:03.

Barrier Integrity: 35% → 34%.

Claimant Charge: 0.

Health Conversion: PENDING.

Emma read the second cost and laughed once without humor. "One body. Two systems billing it."

Jace felt the Free Claim drain building again, not as one clean wound but as a rhythm. Noah's breath. The barrier's pulse. Noah's breath. The barrier's pulse. Each one asked whether Jace still contained enough of himself to turn responsibility into fuel.

He did not feel heroic. He felt used by mechanisms he had chosen to keep active because the people inside them were real. That was the part nobody put in the reward screen. A moral choice could still grind someone down. Refusing ownership did not make the cost disappear; it only stopped the System from deciding who deserved to pay it.

Noah breathed.

Health: 58/420 → 57/420.

VITALITY CHECK: PASSED.

Vitality Proficiency: 0% → 4%.

WILLPOWER CHECK: PASSED.

Willpower Proficiency: 62% → 64%.

Heir's Claim Proficiency: 6% → 9%.

Seraphina knelt beside Jace. Her voice lowered enough that Noah could choose whether to hear it.

"The registry will not leave this unresolved," she said. "It will keep applying pressure until the contradiction becomes something it recognizes."

"Ownership."

"Or deletion."

Jace looked at the black veins climbing his wrist.

Seraphina did too.

"Or claimant collapse."
