CHAPTER 3: NIGHT OF PERILS.

MAX'S POV.

Bewildered, I beheld a sight that shattered my heart into a thousand pieces. My girlfriend was bent over on her knees, and banged from behind by who I'd never imagine she'd do such a thing with- Zack. I thought he was out celebrating with Quin and Chloe.

"Julia!" I yelled in anger.

Stunned, the duo turned quickly in my direction. Seeing I was the one, Julia smiled and resumed bouncing on Zack's erect and rigid penis, making sure a got a clear view of her ass as it giggled.

Her moans were a direct mockery of me. I couldn't remember what it felt like making love to my own girlfriend. But there she was, giving what was mine to someone else.

Was it even mine, though?

"You can come join in, Max. I'm not selfish," Zack smiled, grabbing Julia by the waist as he began thrusting in and out of her forcefully. Despite the loud music, I could hear the sound of his impact against Julia's jiggling butt.

Consumed with rage, I walked over and punched him on his left cheek, causing him to fall sideways on the bed.

"What the hell's wrong with you?!" Julia yelled, glaring at me.

Lord, have mercy! She even had the effrontery to yell at me when I caught her cheating? That spoke volumes.

Wiping the blood off his mouth, Zack chuckled, getting up out of Julia's bed. Julia quickly put on her dress,, which was on the floor.

"How could you do this, Julia? Why? After everything I've done?" I asked, my eyes welling up with tears.

"I never loved you, Max. You practically wouldn't let me be, so I had to have pity on you. But I can't be with a simp like you," she replied with no remorse whatsoever.

"So it had to be Zack, of all people?"

"Uh, just so you know, she's been banging your brother Carl as well," Zack chipped in.

My eyes widened in disbelief as I looked at Julia. She looked away, rolling her eyes. That was all the confirmation I needed.

"So all those times I met you at the house, you-you were-" I couldn't utter those words, let alone bear the thought of it.

"Max, look, I appreciate everything you've done for me, but I can't settle with an ungifted. I thought that with time, you would gain control of your gifts, but you still haven't. And I fear you won't if it has taken you this long and there's no result."

Julia's pitiful look hurt more than her words. I didn't even realize when tears ran down my cheeks. I wiped off tears and turned toward Zack. He stood stark naked, looking at me. I walked up to him, sulking.

"For what's worth, be assured that I'll take good care of her, just as you saw me doing," Zack said, smirking.

I lost my temper and threw a punch at him, but he telekinetically restrained my hand from moving, stretching his right hand. I struggled to move my hand, but my effort was to no avail.

I threw another punch with my free arm, and he did the same as with the other, stretching his other hand. I winced in pain as Zack began twisting my arms.

A mild smirk crept up Julia's face. She took pleasure in my pain? I meant that little to her?

"I could snap your hands like a twig right now, but out of the goodness of my heart, I won't, so you could at least jerk off, now that you don't have a girlfriend."

Saying that, he released me. I fell to my knees, catching my breath. I looked up and saw Julia all snuggly in Zack's arms. Gritting my teeth, I got up. Glaring at them one last time, I walked out of Julia's house, putting on my hood.

The one place I thought I could find solace was where I got my heart shattered the most.

I was without myself, walking aimlessly and with no idea where I was going, through the bustling streets of the Creeks, bumping into folks mindlessly with my head bowed.

The insults hurled didn't register as all that clouded my head were the voices and pictures of those who have hurt me.

I could still see their mocking smiles, even though not present with me. My head began swirling. I was overtaken by a strong dizziness, and at the same time, plagued with those mocking smiles and their incessant insults.

"You're weak. You're a failure. I wonder why you're still alive. Die already. You can never be me, you bastard son of a homewrecker."

These and more kept ringing in my head.

"Leave me alone. Leave me alone," I said, scrunching my face as I tried to drive out the voices, but the voices wouldn't just go away.

I began feeling a tempestuous rage welling up in me as the voices got louder and noisier. I didn't know when I yelled, "Shut up!"

There was a surge of electricity from my body, which made the clouds rumble. All the bulbs, all power transmitters within five thousand yards, got fried, ushering a part of the Creeks into a blackout.

I was stunned at what happened. I looked at my hands and saw jolts of electricity crackling around them. Looking around, I saw the damage I had unknowingly caused. The folks around looked at me in shock, terrified, even the gifted.

I came to myself when I heard the city alarm go off. Soon, the Enforcers were going to swarm the place, so I took to my heels.

I had no destination as I made my escape. I couldn't think clearly and logically in the state of mind I was in.

I suddenly felt a hand pull me out of nowhere into a dark room. A hand was put across my mouth as I heard a voice quietly shushing me, so I complied.

Soon after, I heard the Enforcers passing through where I was. I would have been caught had I not been in that room.

Seeing that the coast was clear, I was released. As a source of illumination came on, I saw that it was Quin and that Chloe had come to my rescue. So I took off my hood.

"Max?" Chloe exclaimed, as both girls were stunned to see that I was the one.

"What happened? Why are the Enforcers after you?" Quin inquired, furrowing her brow.

Fresh tears began streaming down my face as I looked down.

CHAPTER 9: COUNCIL OF BARONS. The atmosphere at the Sovereign's hold was quite tense. Events of the previous night caused the Sovereign to tighten security at the hold. Although activities went on as usual, there was a renewed sense of alertness by everyone, especially the guards. Along the massive hallways, footsteps could be heard as Lord Julius made his way to the hall of council. The Sovereign had called for a council meeting with the Barons earlier that day at dawn. As he got to the door, the sovereign guards bowed, and the steel red doors slid into the wall to the left and the right automatically, sensing his presence. He didn't as much as nod in acknowledgement to the salutation of the guards. He ignored them and walked in.Up ahead at the round table, he saw lord Castor and lord Kole chit-chatting. They seemed rather at ease. "What are you two so engrossedly talking about?" lord Julius asked, pulling out a seat among the four empty seats at the majestically crafted table.

It had been over three hours since they left the house."Max, you won't believe the obnoxious thing Quin was imagi- The hell!" Chloe exclaimed, furrowing her brow. "What happened?" Quin asked as they quickly set the grocery bags down and walked toward me. Chloe took off the ice bag and looked at my face."Who did this?" she asked."The Morton brothers," I replied, sighing. "Those assholes! I swear to God, I'll-" "It's okay, Quin. I took care of it. There's no need for the violence," I interrupted, trying not to let things get out of hand, knowing how hot-tempered Quin was, especially when it came to people she cared about."They came to get their cut from the heist we pulled," I added."The

CHAPTER 7: INCIDENT AT THE BETROTHAL CEREMONY.RAIKA'S POV.Standing close to Percy, we waltzed to a soft ballad that the band played. It was so beautifully played that I'd have rather sat and listened to it, but I was obligated to do otherwise.I was impressed at how good Percy had gotten since the last time I ever witnessed him dancing, but it wasn't with me, though. It was with that cheeky, self-absorbed Megan. I was glad she and the other kids of the Barons weren't here. But there was escaping her as long as we were all expected to resume training at the academy the next day. What a grueling task it would be to deal with her crap. But what the hell.As we danced, speaking no words to each other, I caught sight of a couple of unfriendly faces I recognized. I couldn't help but stare anytime I had the opportunity to, as I waltzed, furrowing my brow."Is everything okay?" Percy asked. "Yeah. Everything is okay," I replied, cracking a mild smile, trying to hide my concern. It felt li

I was absent-minded, staring down at my food, which I had only eaten halfway."Earth to Raika!" "Mm," I gasped, looking up. "Were you saying something, Mother?""I'm surprised to see that you are nervous," Mother said, furrowing her brow slightly as she looked intently at me."Nervous? Me?" I scoffed. "Why the heck would I be nervous?" "Well, it's just unusual seeing you this way. You've never seemed nervous. But it's okay to be nervous. Just so you know, I was a nervous wreck when it was my Betrothal Ceremony to your father. You're handling way better than I did," she said, then she gulped some wine."Thank you for the encouragement, Mother, but I'm not nervous." "Then what's weighing on your mind?" Mother inquired. I munched a little bit of the grilled steak we were served for lunch. H

CHAPTER 5: AT THE BETROTHAL CEREMONY.A man accompanied by a Sovereign guard walked hastily through the hallways of the Sovereign's hold. He nodded, greeting some of the officials who were standing and those who were up and about at the hold. It was a busy day at the hold.He got to a section of the palace and walked to a twelve-foot door. On each side of the door stood a soldier, dressed in navy blue uniforms and armed, looking well-groomed. He went ahead to knock on the door. "My Lady? It is time." After a short while of getting no response, he knocked again. "Lady Raika. It's time." Once again, there was no response. Lord Keefe went ahead to push open the door and walk into the Princess's chamber. He met her absence. "Where is she? Where is the Princess?" he asked the soldiers who stood guard by her door. They looked confusedly at Lord Keefe. "After she returned from lunch, she hasn't left her chambers, my lord," one of the soldiers said. "Well, she isn't in her chambers, is

CHAPTER 4: REASONABLE DOUBT.MAX'S POV.Stepping out of the door I entered, I found myself in the middle of the road, in what seemed like a war-torn area. Turning back, I saw that Quin and Chloe were nowhere to be found. I was gripped with a little bit of fear. There were buildings destroyed, vehicles on fire, as though a bomb had gone off. There was carnage all around me as far as the eye could see. The sky was red as though the heavens bled.Smoke and dust filled the air, making visibility a bit challenging. I was also covered in dust, I guess as a result of the rubble all around me. Before me, there were dead bodies and injured folks wailing. Terrified at the sight before me, I reflexively took a few steps backward and stumbled, falling onto a body with a first-degree burn. Gasping in fear, I quickly stood to my feet. "Where am I? What's going on?" I muttered. Up ahead, I saw a mound of rubble as though something heavy had landed in the middle of the road. So, I walked over to i
