Kaelen scaled the jagged cliffs of the Obsidian Mountains, his black boots crushing the brittle glass beneath him. The air grew thinner with every step, replaced by a thick, suffocating pressure. Toxic violet Aether choked the sky above, leaking from the upper peaks in heavy, deadly currents.

A normal man would melt from the inside out within minutes of breathing this atmosphere. Their lungs would blister, and their blood would boil.

Kaelen just inhaled deeply. The absolute darkness of his Void affinity roared to life in his veins. Black lines throbbed against his pale skin, aggressively devouring the lethal radiation. The toxic Aether was instantly crushed, converted into a boundless well of stamina that fueled his relentless climb.

"The holy priests in their pristine golden towers would choke on this air," Malakor rasped. The ancient entity’s voice scraped against the inside of Kaelen’s skull like jagged iron. "They preach about their holy light, but that light dies the second it touches this mountain."

Kaelen didn't break his stride. "I don't care about their preaching. I care about tearing down their walls."

"Out here, among the monsters, you aren't the prey anymore," Malakor purred.

"I was never the prey," Kaelen stated coldly.

He willed his status interface to manifest. Lightless blue runes flickered into his periphery, slicing through the violet fog.

[System: Absolute Void Affinity - Level 7]

[System: Aether Radiation Absorbed. Stamina Restored.]

He analyzed the minor stat increases with a deep frown. The numbers were entirely inadequate for the war he intended to wage. General Lyraenza possessed enough raw solar energy to vaporize an entire city block with a single command.

If Kaelen descended the mountain right now, the Aegis army would burn him to ash. He needed to evolve. He needed overwhelming, monstrous power to rip the Sun God's influence from this dying world.

He dismissed the runes with a sharp flick of his wrist.

Before he could take another step, a heavy tremor violently shook the dark glass beneath his boots. Thud. Thud. Thud.

Kaelen instantly dropped his center of gravity, perfectly balanced and ready to strike. The violent wind shifted, carrying the vile stench of rotting meat, stagnant water, and old blood. Through the swirling gray ash, a massive, terrifying shadow materialized.

It was a Blood-Armored Dreadfang. Kaelen recognized the horrific beast from the forbidden archives of the lower city. It was a mid-tier Calamity Beast, a creature that normally required an entire squad of elite Aegis Paladins to subdue.

The monster stood taller than a military transport carriage, pacing on four heavily muscled limbs. Thick, blood-red bone plates pulsed with dull, menacing light along its heavily armored spine. Drool the color of dirty pond water dripped from jaws lined with jutting, crooked tusks.

Kaelen didn’t draw his standard blade. Normal steel would shatter against that armor. He channeled his raw essence, turning the shadows pooling around his boots into thick, bubbling dark oil.

[System: Skill Activated - Shadow Step]

The physical world blurred into a rapid, gray smear. Disorientation hit for a fraction of a second before Kaelen materialized high in the air above the beast. Gravity instantly took hold, pulling him down toward the Dreadfang’s armored skull.

He focused the Void into his right arm. Dense, black matter violently coiled around his forearm. It hardened instantly into a jagged, light-consuming blade of pure dark matter.

The Dreadfang possessed supernatural, predatory instincts. It felt the sudden shift in air pressure and jerked its massive head upward. Rather than cowering, the beast spun its heavy torso with terrifying speed.

Its thick tail, lined with razor-sharp bone spurs, whipped through the air straight at Kaelen’s ribs. A strike like that would shatter a normal man in half.

Kaelen didn't flinch. He didn't even attempt to dodge. He coated his left hand in dense, gravity-crushing Void energy and caught the lethal tail mid-swing.

The kinetic impact was deafening. The shockwave shattered the obsidian glass beneath the beast, but Kaelen didn’t budge an inch. The Void absorbed the kinetic force, nullifying the beast's momentum completely.

The Dreadfang roared in utter confusion.

"Too slow," Kaelen sneered.

He tightened his grip, his Void-enhanced fingers mercilessly cracking the beast's bone spurs. With a brutal, two-handed yank, he ripped the massive beast entirely off balance. The Dreadfang crashed heavily onto its side, cracking its red armor against the unyielding plateau.

Before the monstrous feline could recover, Kaelen descended like a falling meteor. He drove his Void blade straight toward the creature’s open, roaring mouth.

[System: Passive Triggered - Corrosive Blood]

Kaelen intentionally sliced his own palm against the edge of his dark matter blade. His dark red blood instantly mutated into highly volatile cosmic acid the second it hit the air. The corrosive liquid completely coated his weapon as it plunged deep down the monster's throat.

The beast's defiant roar twisted into a wet, pathetic, gurgling shriek. Thick, noxious black smoke violently erupted from its jaws. Kaelen’s acid ruthlessly melted through the beast's throat, vocal cords, and internal organs in mere seconds.

Kaelen twisted his wrist, carving a massive, hollow hole straight through the beast's neck. Black, liquefied flesh poured out onto the obsidian stone, hissing violently as it melted the ground. The Dreadfang thrashed wildly in sheer agony for two seconds before going completely limp.

Kaelen stood triumphantly over the massive carcass, his breathing perfectly steady. The minor cut on his palm was already stitching itself closed with black tendrils of energy.

[System: Void Regeneration Activated. Wound Healed.]

He didn't waste a single second admiring the kill. Kaelen plunged his bare right hand directly into the scalding, melted chest cavity of the Dreadfang. He dug relentlessly through ruined muscle and shattered ribs until his fingers brushed against a vibrating, jagged crystal.

He gripped it tight and ripped the Aether Core free. The crystal was the size of a large apple, glowing fiercely with a violent, bloody red light. Veins of dark energy shifted sluggishly inside the gem.

Without a second thought, Kaelen crushed the core in his fist.

[System: Skill Activated - Essence Absorption]

A spiraling vortex of absolute darkness erupted from his palm. The Void drilled violently into the red crystal, shattering it into a cloud of glowing dust. The raw, unfiltered energy slammed directly into Kaelen's bloodstream.

The reaction was immediate and brutal. It felt like swallowing molten iron. Kaelen gritted his teeth, his jaw locking tight as the violent power raged through his veins.

The veins in his neck bulged black, standing out starkly against his pale skin. He refused to drop to his knees, forcing the chaotic foreign energy into submission through sheer, unrelenting willpower. The searing heat in his blood finally snapped into a cold, lethal clarity.

[System: Level 8 Reached!]

[System: Raw Strength and Agility Significantly Increased.]

[System: Physical Mutation Unlocked - Abyssal Talons.]

Kaelen exhaled a long breath of freezing black mist. He looked down at his right hand. The beast's boiling blood flaked off his skin, revealing a dark transformation.

His fingernails had thickened and grown rapidly. They were now matte, metallic black talons, curved slightly at the ends and razor-sharp. He tapped his thumb against his index finger, and the talons clicked together with the heavy sound of tempered steel.

"Excellent," Kaelen muttered, flexing his newly mutated hand. The power coursing through his limbs felt incredibly dense and violent.

He looked up at the toxic fog rolling over the plateau. His vision suddenly shifted, automatically adjusting to a totally new spectrum. Faint, pulsing ribbons of sickly light hung in the air, weaving through the fog.

[System: Predator’s Senses Activated. Aether Trails Visible.]

They were tracks. Clear, glowing residual paths of Aether left behind by other, more powerful Calamity Beasts.

"You are shedding the weak flesh, Kaelen," Malakor chuckled darkly, sounding genuinely pleased. "There are ancient things waiting higher up. Things that will give you the strength to slaughter the golden priests and burn their citadel."

Kaelen ignored the ancient entity's praise. He locked his newly enhanced eyes on a fresh, glowing Aether trail leading higher up the obsidian incline. It vanished directly into a thick, menacing bank of deep violet fog.

He rolled his shoulders, his new black talons glinting dangerously in the toxic light. Without a single backward glance at the ruined Dreadfang, Kaelen stepped into the mist. He was ready for the next slaughter.
