Chapter 62 Part 3
Kyle spent the afternoon running between rooms like a waiter at a restaurant where every table hated each other. He carried water upstairs for Wren, who refused to drink anything from a communal tap. He brought fresh towels to Bianca, who had claimed every towel on the second floor as a territorial marker. He fixed Scarlett’s pillow, which had been flattened during the room shuffle. He delivered tea to Vivian, who accepted it without thanks. He adjusted Hailey’s reading lamp, which had been knocked sideways when the demons swept through. He handed Riley a new blanket because the old one smelled like demon robes.By nine in the evening, Kyle collapsed onto his own bed with the exhausted satisfaction of a man who had kept seven women from killing each other for a full day. The house was quiet. The demons had retreated into the walls. The lights were dimming.Kyle picked up the terminal. Opened the group chat. Typed one message. Hit send to all.Kyle: Goodnight, baby~He set the terminal
Chapter 62 Part 2
“I refuse to eat the fish.” Wren folded her arms. “I refuse the eggplant. I refuse the soup. And I refuse anything purchased with that woman’s black card. If it touched her money, it touched her influence.”“Then what are you going to eat?” Kyle looked at her.“Terminal rations.” Wren sat back down with rigid posture. “Sealed. Untouched by sheep hands.”Kyle walked to the pantry, pulled out a strip of terminal issued meat jerky, tore the wrapper open, and held it in front of Wren’s mask. She bit into it without using her hands, her masked face tilted upward, her jaw working through the tough, dry meat with the offended dignity of a queen eating peasant bread.“The Sugar Baby Queen.” Vivian’s amber eyes gleamed from across the table. “Ten stars. Two hundred years old. Held back an ocean. And she’s eating jerky from a foil wrapper because she’s scared of ginger.”“I am not scared!” Wren chewed furiously. “I am cautious! There is a difference that your serpent brain is too primitive to u
Chapter 62 Part 1
Wren was still staring at the string of sevens on the terminal when Kyle reached across the table and placed a pair of chopsticks in her gloved hand.“Eat first.” Kyle closed the terminal and slid it into his pocket. “Conspiracy theories later.”“That was not a conspiracy theory.” Wren’s masked face turned toward Hailey, who sat at the far end of the table sipping tea with her glasses slightly fogged from the steam. “That was a coded message from a woman who hypnotized my husband in a demon palace and changed the outcome of my wedding. Sevens mean something. I want to know what.”“They mean eat your lunch before it gets cold.” Kyle pushed a plate of steamed fish toward her. “You didn’t eat breakfast. Your stomach has been growling for an hour.”“My stomach does not growl.” Wren picked up the chopsticks with stiff dignity. “It expresses displeasure at an audible frequency.”Vivian watched Wren load her plate with three servings of rice, two pieces of fish, a heap of eggplant, and a bow
Chapter 61 Part 3
Vivian appeared from the kitchen doorway. Her amber eyes locked on Wren’s arm through Kyle’s and her thin smile appeared.“I knew it.” Vivian’s voice was cold and precise. “From the moment she walked in with those blue flowers and that new mask, I knew she was a troublemaker.”“I’m not a troublemaker.” Wren sat down at the table and folded both gloved hands in front of her. “I’m a wife. Troublemaking is a side effect.”Kyle pulled out the terminal and opened the household group chat. Six names now. He added Wren’s registration to the group with two taps and held up the screen. The Vicious Husband and His One Wife Plus Four Intern Ex Wives Divorce Group.Wren read the title. Her masked face turned slowly toward Kyle.“I am not an intern.” Wren’s voice went dangerously low. Before Kyle could respond, the chat title changed. Someone had edited it remotely. Kyle checked the sender.Vivian.New title: Beast Wife Divorce Group.A notification popped up immediately. Wren has left the group.“
Chapter 61 Part 2
“Your new jacket.” Wren set it on the bed beside him. “I put thirty thousand demons to work last night while you were sleeping. They can make anything. Suits, gowns, armor, furniture. Tell me what you want to wear and it appears by morning.”“You have thirty thousand personal tailors.” Kyle picked up the blazer and felt the weight of it. Heavy, warm, and so perfectly fitted it looked like it had been measured against his body while he slept, which it probably had.“I have thirty thousand loyal servants who happen to be excellent with needles.” Wren stood up and walked to his side of the bed. “Put it on.”Kyle pulled the blazer over his shoulders and looked at himself in the mirror. The red velvet caught the afternoon light and turned it to fire. The diamonds at the collar threw tiny sparks across his jawline. He looked like a man who owned things and knew it.“One more thing.” Wren reached into her coat and pulled out a mask. Not the silver one she wore. The black and red demon mask fr
Chapter 61 Part 1
The mask came away in Kyle’s hands like a shell being lifted from something it had protected for too long.Wren’s face was fair, sharper than he expected, with cheekbones cut high and clean and a jaw that could have been drawn with a ruler. Five scars ran diagonally from her left temple to her jaw, pale and raised, healed but permanent, the same marks he had seen in the memory of a ten year old girl standing in blood at the base of a water tower. Her eyes were crimson, burning soft in the starlight, framed by dark lashes that caught the steam like tiny crystals. Two small devil horns curved from her temples, darker than her hair, polished smooth, catching the light from the glowing spring. And her lips. Blood red. Full. Curved into a smile that held nothing theatrical behind it. Just a woman letting someone see her for the first time in two hundred years.“You’re beautiful.” Kyle whispered it before his brain could filter it.“Don’t sound so surprised.” Wren’s cracked voice carried the
