Chapter 1:The man who sold me

The mud in the dead town tasted like copper and stagnant rain. Adrian Cole lay beneath the shadow of a collapsed grocery store, his fingers clawing at the frozen earth as purple veins spread across his neck. The infection was burning through his body, but the pain was nothing compared to the sight of the man standing above him.

Ren Sullivan.

Ren wore the heavy winter coat Adrian had stolen from a raider camp two winters earlier. That was the winter Ren had nearly died of fever, when Adrian walked forty miles searching for medicine and gave him the last of their clean water. He had stayed awake through countless nights to keep his friend alive, believing they could survive anything as long as they had each other.

Now Ren wouldn’t meet his eyes.

“Blackwell’s people keep their promises,” Ren said, glancing toward the armored transport at the end of the street. “Running water, greenhouses, and walls the infected can’t break through.”

“We survived three years together,” Adrian rasped. “After everything we’ve been through, you’re going to leave me here?”

“I know what we’ve been through.”

“Then help me up.”

Ren’s jaw tightened. “Victor Blackwell wanted the location of the man who raided his supply convoy. I gave him what he wanted.”

Adrian stared at him, waiting for an explanation that might make the betrayal less unbearable, but Ren offered nothing.

“You sold me.”

“I did what I had to do.”

“I raided that convoy to feed us!” Adrian’s words dissolved into a violent cough, leaving blood at the corner of his mouth. “You would have starved without me!”

“And I’m grateful, but gratitude won’t keep me alive.” Ren’s voice cracked before he looked away. “I’m tired of starving and running. I want a future, Adrian, and Blackwell can give me one.”

Adrian remembered carrying Ren through infected territory when fever had made him too weak to walk. They had shared their last meal during those desperate months, and Adrian had trusted him with every secret and resource, never imagining Ren would trade their friendship for a place behind someone else’s walls.

“You’re going to regret this,” he whispered.

Ren looked down at him, his expression hollow with the desperation of a man who had convinced himself betrayal was necessary for survival.

“Goodbye, Adrian.”

“Ren!”

Adrian dragged himself forward, but his bitten leg collapsed beneath him. The armored vehicle began moving, Victor Blackwell’s iron-fist crest flashing across its door before the truck disappeared into the gray mist.

Three years of sacrifice had bought him nothing but a grave.

A wet growl sounded behind him. Adrian turned and saw three infected approaching the abandoned vehicles. He reached for his knife, but his trembling fingers could no longer grip the handle, and darkness blurred his vision.

As the first infected lunged, Adrian closed his eyes, holding on to one final promise.

If I ever get another chance, I’ll make you pay.

Darkness swallowed him.

Adrian gasped and shot upright, his hands flying to his chest. He expected torn flesh and the burning agony of the infection, but his skin was whole, his breathing steady, and his clothes were clean.

“What the hell happened?”

A sharp buzz made him roll off the bed and scan the room for danger. There were no infected scratching at the walls or shattered windows letting in the freezing wind. The sound came from a smartphone vibrating on his nightstand, its unbroken screen displaying a date he never expected to see again.

7:00 a.m., Sunday, September 13, 2026.

September 13. The apocalypse would begin on October 13, exactly thirty days away.

Adrian checked the date again as memories flooded his mind: the hospitals overwhelmed by infected patients, the cities collapsing into chaos, and the fortified settlements rising from the ruins. Most of all, he remembered Ren walking away while he lay dying in the mud.

Yet here he was, alive and uninjured, thirty days before the world fell apart.

Somehow, Adrian had returned to the past.

He gripped the nightstand, struggling to accept the impossible second chance, but he couldn’t afford to waste time searching for answers. He had thirty days to prepare, and this time, he wouldn’t let anyone decide his fate.

A strange pressure stirred behind his eyes, followed by a thought that seemed to appear inside his mind without warning.

I need to call the bank before lunch.

Adrian froze. The thought hadn’t come from him. Another surfaced almost immediately, faint but unmistakable.

I hope Adrian doesn’t forget the budget meeting again.

He turned toward the wall separating his apartment from the neighboring unit, realizing he could somehow hear another person’s thoughts. The pressure disappeared before he could investigate, leaving him with another mystery to solve.

For now, survival came first.

Adrian opened his banking application and studied his savings. The money wasn’t enough to build an empire, but he could sell unnecessary possessions, liquidate investments, and secure loans before the financial system collapsed. He opened a blank note and listed his priorities: securing a warehouse outside the city center, stockpiling food and medicine, purchasing water purification systems and generators, obtaining transportation, and identifying future threats.

His memories supplied details about the roads that would become impassable, the districts that would fall first, and the supposedly safe settlements that would turn into death traps. Unlike in his previous life, he knew what was coming.

At the bottom of the list, he typed one name.

Ren Sullivan.

Adrian’s anger returned, but he refused to let revenge distract him from preparation. He would deal with Ren when he had the resources to ensure the traitor could never threaten him again.

His phone vibrated.

Morning, bro. Are we still meeting today? Got something important to discuss with you.

Ren’s familiar friendliness made Adrian’s jaw tighten. He began composing a casual reply when a news alert appeared on the screen.

Breaking: Authorities investigate mysterious incident at Halcyon City research facility. Multiple casualties reported.

Adrian stared at the headline. In his previous life, the incident connected to the outbreak had occurred weeks later. He opened the report and checked its publication time. Eleven minutes ago.

Something had changed, and he couldn’t assume the future would unfold exactly as he remembered.

Another notification arrived from an unknown number.

You shouldn’t have come back, Adrian Cole.

Adrian read the message twice, struggling to understand how anyone could know he had returned to the past. Before he could investigate, his phone began ringing.

Dr. Evelyn Cross.

In his previous life, Evelyn had been a virologist who died after getting too close to the truth behind the infection. Adrian answered cautiously, wondering why she was contacting him before the apocalypse.

“Adrian Cole?” Her strained voice came through the speaker. “Listen carefully. I don’t know how you know what’s coming, but if you’ve returned too, we have a serious problem.”

Adrian’s heart hammered. If Evelyn had returned as well, he wasn’t the only person whose future had been rewritten.

Then a strange pressure stirred behind his eyes, and another thought surfaced beneath her frightened voice.

Don’t tell him about the facility.

Adrian’s skin prickled. Evelyn was hiding something, and whatever it involved, she didn’t want him to know.

Before he could question her, she whispered, “The apocalypse has already begun.”
