By the time they got home, the sky had already darkened. Gray unlocked the apartment door and stepped inside with Lily following quietly behind him.

"Go wash your hands, Lily," Gray said softly, setting her backpack down near the door.

Lily gave a small nod and headed to the bathroom without a word. Her steps were slower than usual. Nothing like her normally cheerful, bouncing self.

Gray walked into the kitchen and poured a glass of water, patiently waiting for her. When Lily came out and sat down at the table, he placed the glass in front of her.

"Thank you, brother," she muttered quietly.

Gray sat across from her. It was obvious Lily was still upset about what she told him earlier. Seeing her like this made his chest ache.

"Lily," he said gently, "can you tell me their names?"

Lily's shoulders stiffened. Her gaze slowly lifted to meet his face.

"I just want to know who they are," he continued calmly. "I'm not going to storm into your school or do something crazy. I promise. I just

Five days had passed in the blink of an eye since Gray made the bold investment. Now, with less than two days left to complete the System mission, Gray was already hoping for some miracle. He hadn't seen Chloe since their last tutoring session on Friday since they had no sessions over the weekend. That was also why he'd been able to rest and slack off for two days. He stayed mostly at home with his sister. The two of them enjoyed the comfort of their small apartment, spending most of their time in the cozy living room watching animated movies and eating. Every late afternoon, they'd also take a walk to the nearby park."I'll pick you up again later, okay?" Gray said, ruffling Lily's hair gently. As Monday came, their daily routine continued. Today, Gray walked Lily to school. His sister looked visibly happy about it."Yes, brother!"Lily nodded with a bright smile, her backpack bouncing as she shifted on her feet. Same as her reaction throughout the past week, she was always happy whe

  • Chapter 29: Deal With Her Father

Chloe didn't need to wait long.Within minutes, she stood in front of her father's office on the highest floor of their mansion, the third floor. As she arrived, the heavy door slowly opened as if waiting for her arrival. Her father's office was a world of its own.Elegance and perfection could barely describe it.Dark mahogany shelves stretched from floor to ceiling, packed with countless books. Business strategy, global politics, rare first editions, and even philosophy texts with cracked leather spines that looked ancient.A tall glass window behind the main desk let in golden rays of late afternoon sun, casting long shadows across the room's intricate, custom-made Persian rug.In one corner stood a vintage globe bar cart. Beside it was a well-maintained bonsai tree resting on a raised stand. The scent of polished wood, aged paper, and faint cologne gave the room an aura of old money.Several framed paintings and photos hung on the plain wall opposite the shelves. Chloe recognized

  • Chapter 28: A Davenport, After All

"So do you understand what I said?" Gray adjusted his hold on the tablet in his hands. His eyes squinted as he glanced at the whiteboard, full of written notes. The afternoon sun filtered through the tall windows of the Davenport estate's study room, casting long streaks of light across the polished floor."Yeah." Chloe nodded briefly as she scribbled down notes in her notebook. She had learned several new things with Gray's help. It was only their third session, but she could already tell she'd improved a lot.Chloe was happy about it. Her sessions with Gray also helped her recall lessons she'd learned previously. She was very thankful for it."That's good, then." Gray placed the tablet on the table. It had been an hour since their session started, and they had already gone through several topics."It seems like things aren't as hopeless as you claimed to be." Gray's lips turned into a playful smile. He sat down and leaned his back gently against the couch.Gray knew that learning co

  • Chapter 27: Other Plans

The old man was breathing heavily, still visibly shaken from his close call with death. He looked at Gray with wide eyes reflecting disbelief and gratitude."You..." the man rasped, his voice trembling slightly. "You saved me."The old man gripped Gray's arm tightly, as if afraid to let go. Gray smiled lightly and brushed the dust off the man's sleeve. He let him hold on, knowing the impact of the near-accident might still be hitting him."It's okay, sir. You're safe now," he said. "You really should be more careful, though. You nearly gave everyone here a heart attack."The man gave a weak chuckle, still catching his breath."I suppose I did, because I almost had one myself." The old man still had the presence of mind to joke, even though he was visibly anxious.Gray let the man regain his composure for a few minutes. He just stayed there in silence as the old man breathed in and out, each breath heavy. The crowd that had gathered slowly dispersed, each person going on with their liv

Still, instead of sleeping late, he decided to wake up early to prepare breakfast for Lily and help her get ready for school. As soon as Lily woke up, she took a shower and changed her clothes. Afterward, she sat on the couch in the living room, tying her shoes with clumsy hands while still half-asleep."You look like you fought a battle in your sleep, Lily," Gray teased lightly as he knelt beside her to help fix her loosened laces."Yes, brother. I dreamed that I was a fairy fighting a dragon," Lily puffed her cheeks and pouted as she recalled her dream."Oh? Our Lily is a princess now?" Gray chuckled, making both of them laugh."Yes, brother.""Alright, Princess Lily. Eat breakfast now so we can get to your class.""Yes, brother!"Lily quickly ate her breakfast. When she was done, they immediately stepped out of their apartment building. The morning sun greeted them. The weather today was gent

He had every reason to be happy.By the time he returned to the apartment, the afternoon sun was already dipping behind the buildings. The living room was quiet. No one greeted him when he stepped through the door."Isn't she back from school yet?" Gray set down his bag and peeked into Lily's room to check on her.She was fast asleep on her small bed, just adequate for her size. The bed was littered with the small stuffed toys he'd gifted her over the years. Lily was already in her home clothes, her limbs sprawled out and her cheeks flushed with exhaustion."Wow, she must really be tired," Gray muttered with a soft chuckle. It was rare for Lily to sleep after class, so she must have done a lot today. With the house quiet and no distractions, Gray walk
