Gray woke up the next morning feeling more energetic than he had in months. His body still ached from hard labor, but somehow the pain felt lighter today. He stretched his arms over his head and climbed out of bed, a smile already forming on his face.
Today was going to be a good day.
He hummed a tune under his breath as he walked across their small apartment to check on Lily. She was still curled up in her bed, her messy hair spread across the pillow and her mouth slightly open as she slept. Gray chuckled quietly and shook his head. Better to let her sleep a bit longer while he made breakfast.
Gray tiptoed to the kitchen area, careful not to make too much noise. He opened the fridge and found containers of leftovers from yesterday's feast. He could have just reheated everything, but he wanted to make something fresh.
As he cracked eggs into the pan and listened to them sizzle, Gray thought about Lily's face yesterday when she saw all that food. The way her eyes had lit up, the sound of her laughter filling their cramped apartment. Those small moments were what had kept him going all this time, even when everything else felt hopeless.
He hummed again while he cooked, thinking about all the things they could buy today. Clothes that actually fit Lily properly. Maybe some new shoes. Toys she'd only ever looked at through store windows.
When breakfast was ready, Gray walked over to Lily's bed and stood beside her for a moment. She looked so peaceful bundled up in her blanket, completely unaware that their lives were about to change.
"Hey, Lily." Gray gently shook her shoulder. "Time to wake up."
"Brother..." Lily groaned and pulled the blanket over her head. "Five more minutes."
"Come on, breakfast is ready."
Lily's eyes cracked open and she peeked out from under the blanket. The mention of food was enough to get her moving. She yawned, stretched her arms above her head, and smiled up at him.
"Okay, okay. I'm up!"
"Good. Now go eat before it gets cold."
Lily nodded and jumped out of bed with sudden energy. She ran to the kitchen, and her eyes went wide when she saw the fried eggs and toast waiting for her.
"Wow, brother! It smells so good!"
Lily grabbed a plate and piled food onto it. "You're the best, brother!" She took a big bite of eggs and made happy sounds as she chewed.
Gray sat down across from her and they ate together in comfortable silence, just enjoying the warm food and each other's company.
After breakfast, they both got ready for the day. Gray pulled on a plain shirt and jeans, trying to look somewhat presentable. Lily wore her blue puff dress, one of the few nice things she owned. It was a little too big on her small frame, but it was the nicest dress Gray had been able to afford in the past year.
"How do I look, brother?" Lily spun around, making the dress flare out.
"You look perfect." Gray smiled. "Ready to go?"
"I'm ready!" Lily bounced on her toes, practically vibrating with excitement.
They left the apartment and headed to the nearby mall. Gray watched Lily skip ahead of him on the sidewalk with so much energy. He couldn't wait to see her face when she realized she could actually get the things she'd been dreaming about.
The mall wasn't too far away. Soon they were walking through the automatic doors into the bright, air-conditioned building. Music played from hidden speakers and people milled around with shopping bags.
"Which store should we go to first, brother?" Lily grabbed his hand and tugged him forward.
Gray scratched the back of his head. "I don't know, Lily." Honestly, he wasn't sure. This was his first time actually shopping like this.
"Just go crazy and I'll follow you, okay?"
"Okay!" Lily's face lit up and she dragged him toward a store that sold children's clothes and toys.
Inside, Lily started picking out items with careful consideration. A stuffed bear with soft brown fur. Some shirts with colorful designs. A pair of shoes that actually looked comfortable. Gray stayed to the side and watched her with pride, happy he could finally give her this experience.
But then something occurred to him.
"Wait a minute." Gray's hand flew to his pocket. A spike of panic shot through his chest.
He pulled out his wallet and flipped it open. Empty. Completely empty except for a few coins.
He had forgotten to ask the system where the money was.
Lily stopped browsing and looked back at him. "What's wrong, brother?"
Gray forced an awkward laugh. "Nothing's wrong. You keep shopping, okay? I'll just stay over here."
"Are you sure?"
"Yeah, go on."
"Alright!" Lily went back to looking at clothes, though she kept glancing at him with concern.
Gray turned toward the wall and lowered his voice to barely a whisper. "Okay system, how do I access that money?"
A soft ding echoed in his ears. A small glowing message appeared in the corner of his vision.
[Ding!]
[You can access your funds via this card, Host.]
Before Gray could react, something cool and smooth materialized in his right hand. He flinched and looked down at it.
A sleek black card sat in his palm. It was simple and elegant with no numbers or name on it. Just a silver logo stamped in the center.
Novus Universal Bank.
Gray's eyes went wide in shock. The system had given him a card from one of the most powerful banks in the world. The kind of bank that only dealt with wealthy people, the kind of people Gray had spent his whole life serving and cleaning up after.
"So I just swipe this and it works? That simple?" He mumbled to himself.
[Yes, Host. The card will work in any store.]
"Guess this is really happening." Gray looked up at the bright mall ceiling and let out a quiet laugh.
He turned around just as Lily came running back with her arms full of clothes and toys. Her face was flushed with excitement.
"Brother! I'm done! Look at all this!" She held everything up for him to see. "Can we really get it all?"
"Of course we can." Gray smiled and ruffled her messy hair. "Let's go check out."
They walked together to the register. The cashier, a young woman with her hair tied back, blinked in surprise at the pile of items they set on the counter. Gray could see her trying not to judge them based on their worn clothes and tired faces.
The register beeped repeatedly as she scanned each item. The total climbed higher and higher. Gray stood calmly, his hand resting on the black card in his pocket.
The cashier finally looked up. "That'll be $738.95."
Gray nodded and pulled out the black card. He handed it over casually, like this was something he did every day.
The cashier took one look at the card and her eyes widened. Her whole demeanor changed. Her hands moved more carefully as she took the card and slid it through the machine.
Beep.
[Transaction Approved]
"Thank you for shopping with us." The cashier's voice was suddenly much more polite. She handed the card back with both hands and gave them a genuine smile. "Please come again."
A message flashed in Gray's vision.
[$738.95 has been deducted from your balance.]
[Available Balance: $9,261.05]

Gray took the card and slipped it back into his pocket. Lily grabbed the bags eagerly, her face glowing with happiness.
"Thank you, brother! This is the best day ever!"
Gray watched her clutch the bags like they were precious treasures. His chest felt warm and full in a way it hadn't in years.
"Come on." He put his hand on her shoulder. "We've still got more shopping to do."

Chapter 370: Trending
Gray couldn't sleep that night. He got home past midnight. Eli had fallen asleep in the car on the way back, head against the window, his hand still holding the cuff of Gray's jacket. Gray carried him inside and laid him on his bed without waking him. Lily was already asleep. He sat on the edge of his own bed and stared at the wall. His phone was on the nightstand, buzzing in steady intervals. He didn't pick it up. He stayed there until the sky outside the window started changing color, then he got up and made coffee.By morning, the city had split open.Every news channel was running the story. As an entire broadcast. Anchors sat behind desks and narrated footage from the venue, the arrest, the broadcast, the testimony. They played clips of Benjamin Crowe's report. They played clips of Alistair's rant about Cedric Ventura. They played clips of Eli standing at the microphone in his short-sleeved shirt, speaking in a voice so quiet the boom operator had to adjust mid-sentence.They pl
Chapter 369: If I'm Going Down
Alistair laughed. It started low in his chest and climbed until it filled the microphones and the speakers and every corner of the room.People in the front row leaned back.Alistair braced both hands on the podium. His shoulders shaking, head dropped between his arms. The laughter kept coming, louder now, spilling over itself, the sound of a man who had reached his end. Then he lifted his head. His eyes were wet from pressure. The face behind the laughter was stripped down to bone."You want the truth?" he said. His voice came through the speakers ragged and unsteady. He wasn't performing anymore. The part of him that knew how to perform had burned out somewhere between Gray's question and Eli's testimony and the silence that followed."You want to know what politics looks like?" He straightened up behind the podium. His hand swept across the room. "You think I'm the only one?"Someone in the crowd shifted. A murmur started near the back and died before it reached the front."Cedric
Chapter 368: Am I Your Enemy Too?
Gray walked to the podium with a sense of victory in his steps. He walked at the same pace he had used to cross the main hall, steady and unhurried, as though he were walking to deliver a speech he had prepared weeks ago.Alistair saw him coming. He was still standing behind the microphones, one hand resting on the podium, the other holding his phone. His mouth had been open mid-sentence, still pushing back against the broadcast, still telling the room that what they were seeing was a coordinated attack by his enemies. He stopped talking when Gray stepped onto the stage. For a moment, neither of them moved. The screens behind them were still showing documents. Benjamin Crowe's voice was still coming through the speakers, measured and relentless, narrating each new piece of evidence as it appeared. The crowd below the stage had gone completely still. Phones were raised. Cameras were rolling. Every eye in the room was pointed at the two men standing five feet apart on a platform that ha
Chapter 367: Breaking Point
By nine o'clock, the main hall was full.Every seat was taken, people standing along the walls and in the aisles between the chairs. The air had changed from the cool, open quality of the morning setup to something thicker, warmer, compressed by bodies and noise. The two screens flanking the stage showed the count. Alistair Reid: 58%. Cedric Ventura: 36% with other candidates splitting the rest. The numbers had barely moved in the last hour but the margin was wide enough that the campaign staff had stopped checking and started celebrating.ear the staging corridor, Alistair's team was already preparing. Two aides carried a binder with his victory speech. Another adjusted the height of the podium microphone. The backdrop behind the stage was lit now, Alistair's name glowing in clean white letters against the campaign's navy blue. Someone had placed a small bouquet of flowers on a stand near the podium's base. The supporters in the front rows were on their feet. Some held signs, others
Chapter 366: The Last Toast
The hours moved slowly.Votes were being counted across the city. District by district, the numbers fed into the central system and appeared on the two large screens flanking the stage. Each update brought a small ripple through the room. Campaign staff checked their phones. Aides whispered to each other near the staging corridor. Supporters in the growing crowd pointed at the screens and nodded.Alistair's name sat at the top of every update. Fifty-six percent. Fifty-seven. The lead was comfortable and widening and nobody in his camp looked surprised by it.Gray sat in the third row with a glass of water and his phone face-down on his thigh. He watched the numbers change, the room quietly fill. He watched the clock in the upper corner of the nearest screen tick forward in a count that meant something different to him than it did to everyone else in the building.Hours left."Gray."Alistair appeared beside him. He had come from the staging corridor, jacket unbuttoned, a glass of some
Chapter 365: The Day Had Started
Gray rang Mara at exactly six in the morning. She picked up on the first ring. She had been awake already. He could tell by her voice being lear and sharp that there was no sleep left in it."Everything?" he asked."Everything," she said. "Benjamin Crowe is confirmed at the venue. His press credentials went through last night. James handled it from the inside and as far as Alistair's team knows, he's just another reporter covering the results.""What about the database?""They are live. All four outlets have access codes and are on stand-by." A pause. "The attorney's office confirmed the filing was received and logged. The prosecutor has a sealed copy. We're in the clear."Gray stood at the window of his condo. The city was still dark at the edges, the sky just beginning to lighten along the tops of the buildings to the east. Streetlights were still on. Below, the first cars of the morning moved along the main road in thin, steady lines."How are you?" Mara asked. He almost laughed.
