Maverick stared at the last message on his screen.

'Come alone.'

A horn sounded behind him. The Maybach was still sitting in the middle of the road. He looked at Claire's photo once more, then locked the phone and pulled forward. Whoever had taken her wanted him angry and moving without thinking. He wasn't giving them that.

He drove a few streets and pulled over, then called Claire's number. It rang three times with no answer. He tried again and got a dead line.

"They have her phone," he sai

  • There Is A Bomb!

“Maverick, Eddie—eight heat signatures moving toward your position!” Noah’s voice snapped through the earpiece.Maverick ducked as bullets ripped through the doorway, splintering wood and chipping concrete. Eddie dropped behind a stack of crates, but one round grazed his upper arm. He hissed, pressed a hand against the wound, and looked at the blood spreading between his fingers.“Just a scratch,” he muttered.“Keep telling yourself that,” Maverick replied.A guard rushed around the corner, weapon raised. Maverick slammed his arm aside before the man could fire. The gun discharged into the ceiling. Maverick drove him into the wall, struck him hard enough to send him staggering, then finished the struggle with a brutal blow. The man collapsed in a heap, blood running from his split forehead onto the concrete.Another attacker appeared behind him. Eddie fired, and the man dropped with a cry, clutching his side. He hit the floor and writhed, leaving a dark smear as he tried to drag hims

  • First Battle

“Since you stopped asking what I do with my time.”“You spend most of it sitting in front of a computer,” Silas replied.“Exactly. That’s where computers are useful.”“Noah.”“If you already have someone who can do this, I’ll leave. Otherwise, let me try. You can insult me afterward.”Maverick studied him briefly. “What do you need?”“The original message and access to a decent system. I can’t promise an exact location, but I can try to find where it came from.”“Let him work,” Maverick said when Silas started to object. “We don’t have time to argue.”Noah pulled a chair toward the laptop. His casual expression disappeared as he examined the transmission, opening several windows and running searches through the data embedded in the signal.A few minutes later, he leaned forward. “I’ve got a district. East side, industrial zone. But the signal alone won’t tell us which building.”“Can you see inside?” Maverick asked.Noah glanced at him. “Not with an ordinary connection. But if the sat

  • What Happened?

Silas’s expression remained serious as he stood beside the shooting range’s entrance.“I don’t know where Darius is,” he said. “The last message I received was cut off before he could give me any useful information. All I know is that someone is hunting him, and he may already be in their hands.”Maverick glanced at the phone Silas had placed on the table inside the small office adjoining the range. “Play it again.”Silas did. Static crackled through the speaker before a man’s strained voice emerged.“Silas… they’ve found me. I don’t know how long I can—”The message ended abruptly.Eddie’s face darkened. “Darius was always careful. If he’s sending a message like that, he must be in serious trouble.”“That’s what worries me,” Silas replied. “He wouldn’t contact me after all these years unless he had no other choice.”Maverick studied Silas for a moment. “There’s something you’re not telling us.”Silas didn’t answer immediately. He walked to the window overlooking the shooting range, w

Maverick handed over the rifle and stepped aside.Silas examined the three targets the range attendant had set up at different distances. The attendant had arranged them along the same line, with the smallest target farthest away.“Those weren't there before,” Claire observed.“They weren't,” Eddie replied, watching Silas. A knowing smile touched his face. “Looks like the old man wants to make a point.”Silas settled into position. He took a moment to study the targets, then raised the rifle.Maverick expected him to focus on the nearest one. Instead, Silas aligned his aim with the smallest target at the far end.The shot cracked through the range.A beat later, the attendant stared at the targets. The bullet had passed through the first two and struck the center of the third.Claire rose halfway from her seat. “One shot?”The attendant checked the targets before calling out, “All three hit!”Eddie let out a sharp laugh. “Still showing off, I see.”Silas lowered the rifle with a satis

Maverick considered the statement. “Then how do you tell the difference between a leader who understands his responsibilities and one who doesn't?”“You watch what he does when things don't go according to plan.” Silas turned away from the window. “Anyone can talk about trusting professionals when everyone agrees. The real test comes when a specialist tells you that your plan won't work, or that following your instructions will put people at unnecessary risk.”“And you expect me to prove that I would listen?”“I expect nothing from you yet.”Silas returned to the table, but instead of sitting down, he rested one hand on the back of his chair.“There's a reason I'm particular about this. Years ago, I trained a young man who was exceptionally talented with a rifle. He was patient, disciplined, and capable of making difficult shots under pressure. I believed he had everything he needed to become one of the finest snipers I'd ever trained.”Claire studied Silas's face. “What happened to h

  • Recruiting The Sniper

The eastern sky was beginning to brighten when Maverick stepped out of the main house. The island was already stirring. Two workers carried supplies toward the old storage building, while Thomas stood near the courtyard reminding them to keep away from the northern grounds until Eddie finished mapping the dangerous paths. Near the veranda, Eddie Barret sat at a wooden table with a cup of coffee and several sheets of paper spread before him.Maverick approached and pulled out a chair. “You said you would contact the others last night.”“I did, Boss.”“And?”“One answered.”“Which one?”“The sniper. Silas Ward.” Eddie passed him a folded sheet of paper. “He sent this through an old contact. I haven’t spoken to him directly in decades, but the contact confirmed the message came from him.”Maverick opened it and read.*If the seal has returned, I want to meet the man holding it.
