Chapter 7

He looked at his hands or the idea of his hands, since he had no body here and tried to count what had just landed in his mind.

Ancient medical knowledge that would have taken a lifetime to study.

Acupuncture techniques that no modern practitioner had ever seen.

Herb formulas for medicines that did not exist in any current database.

Martial arts so advanced they bordered on something beyond physical.

And the ability to feel spiritual energy moving through him like a second circulatory system.

“How? How is this possible? Am I dead? Is this what happens when someone die? Your brain just downloads everything it never knew?”

He tried to move in the darkness.

He could not.

Not because something was stopping him. Because he was empty. All the energy that had been moving through him all that warmth, all that current had been used up in the d******d. Every drop of it spent in absorbing what had just been placed inside him.

He was completely drained.

“I need energy,” he thought. It was instinct more than reasoning.

“I need to build up my physical strength. I need to get stronger. Strong enough to hold all of this properly. Strong enough to actually use it.”

“If I can feel all of this in here if this is real  then when I wake up I need to be stronger. I need to build myself up. Because whatever just happened to me whatever this is — it needs a body strong enough to carry it.”

Then the darkness pressed in, the last of the energy faded completely.

And Nathan Cross regain consciousness.

The first thing he felt was the ceiling.

White. Flat. The particular shade of white that existed only in hospitals and nowhere else in the world.

He stared at it.

“Hospital.”

He turned his head slowly and took in the room. Private room. Clean. A monitor beside the bed with soft steady beeping. A drip line running into his left arm. Oxygen sensor on his finger. The smell of antiseptic and recycled air.

A window showing early morning sky, pale gray and just beginning to lighten.

He was alive.

He was in a hospital bed and he was alive.

He sat up.

“Sir.” A nurse appeared from the corner of the room immediately, moving fast, her hands coming up. “Sir, please do not move. You need to stay still.”

He looked at her. Young. Professional. Genuinely concerned.

“I am fine,” he said. His voice came out stronger than he expected.

“Sir, with respect, you are not fine,” she said firmly.

“You were brought in last night in very serious condition. The doctor needs to assess you before you do anything. Please lie back down.”

He looked at his arms.

No bruising. He pressed his fingers against his ribs no pain. He moved his left leg experimentally under the sheet.

No pain.

He pulled the sheet back and looked at his left leg. The leg that Serena had broken with a baseball bat in front of him while two men held him down.

It was straight. Normal. Perfect.

At that moment he looked at it for a long moment.

“Sir, I am serious, please—”

“My leg,” he said quietly.

“When I came in. Was it broken?”

The nurse hesitated.

“When you arrived your vital signs were very low. You were unconscious. But physically—” She checked her tablet quickly.

“The attending physician noted that aside from exhaustion and low blood pressure there were no significant physical injuries. Some fading bruising on the face. Nothing structural.”

Immediately Nathan stared at her.

He could remember Serena had broken his leg.

He had heard it crack. He had screamed. He had seen it bent the wrong way.

And now it was fine.

He pressed his hand to his chest. The mark was still there. Still warm. Quiet now — barely a pulse compared to the roaring heat of the night before. But present. Still working at something.

He remembered the garbage yard. Standing up on a broken leg and feeling nothing. Walking to the fence. The energy carrying him when his body could not carry itself.

He remembered the d******d in the darkness.

"Could it be that what I saw was not a dream?"

The thought arrived slowly and then hit very hard.

"Everything in that darkness. All of that knowledge. The herbs. The acupuncture. The martial techniques. The spiritual energy moving through me like a second bloodstream."

He could still feel it. Faint now — almost nothing, like a fire burned down to the last coal but there. The pathways the ancient knowledge had mapped out. The meridians running through his body. The energy moving through them slowly as his body rebuilt what the night had cost it.

"How is that possible? How is any of this possible?"

“Sir.” The nurse stepped closer.

“I really must insist. The doctor needs to clear you before—”

“I appreciate that,” Nathan said. He was already pulling the drip line out of his arm carefully.

“But I am okay. I need to leave.”

“Sir—”

“I am fine.” He said it gently. He removed the oxygen sensor from his finger. He swung his legs over the side of the bed and stood up.

He stood up straight with no support and no pain.

He had no other choice then, did he?Nathan's muscles tensed slightly, preparing to execute the techniques his body somehow knew — preparing to use what his fragmented memories called the Iron Fist style, a brutal and efficient combat system designed for exactly this kind of close-quarters situation. The bodyguard with the knife raised it slightly, adjusting his grip, preparing to make the cut.Two paces away now. Then one.Nathan's fist clenched. His spiritual energy began to flow, gathering in his arms and legs, preparing for the explosive burst of speed and strength he would need to—"What the hell do you think you are doing?!"The voice cut through the tension like a thunderclap. It was not loud.It was not a shout. But it carried absolute authority — the kind of authority that made everyone freeze in place instinctively, including the bodyguard with the knife raised just inches from Nathan's face.Everyone's heads snapped toward the source of the voice.Vivienne Sterling was stan

At that moment, two of the strongest-looking security guards stepped forward in response to Claire's command. They moved with purpose, their expressions cold and professional, their hands reaching for the tactical knives they kept holstered at their belts. The blades came out with a soft metallic whisper that somehow seemed louder than it should have been in the tense silence.Sharp.Gleaming.Designed to cut through meat and bone with terrifying efficiency. They started walking toward Nathan with deliberate, measured steps, closing the distance between them with the kind of calm confidence that came from years of training and experience in doing exactly this kind of work.Claire watched them approach Nathan, and for the first time since this entire nightmare had begun, she felt a flicker of satisfaction. She knew that if she actually did this — if she actually followed through with cutting out Nathan's tongue right here and now — then at least she would not be severely punished when

If it could be fixed. So there was no point in arguing with Nathan right now.No point in wasting breath on accusations and threats. She just needed to wait.Claire's jaw remained clenched, but she forced herself to speak in a more controlled tone."Well," she said slowly, her eyes locked on Nathan's face, "I am going to give you some minutes. Some minutes to see what is actually going to happen."The unspoken threat hung in the air between them: *And if she dies, you die with her.*Nathan nodded slightly, acknowledging the threat without seeming particularly concerned about it.And that calm acceptance — that complete lack of fear or defensiveness — only made Claire angrier. But she said nothing more. She turned away from Nathan and moved closer to where Vivienne was still bent forward on the pavement, her body trembling, her breathing labored.Claire knelt beside her employer, one hand hovering near Vivienne's shoulder but not quite touching, unsure whether contact would help or mak

At that moment, upon seeing what was happening — upon seeing Vivienne bent forward in agony, vomiting up that thick, whitish substance that looked like corrupted pus — the secretary's face transformed into something beyond fury.It was certainty.Cold, absolute certainty that she had been right all along."I knew it," Claire said, her voice low and venomous. "I knew it. I knew that you were just a quack. I knew that nothing good was going to come from you."She took a step closer to where the bodyguards were holding Nathan, her eyes blazing with barely controlled rage."I blindly allowed you to do this," she continued, her voice rising slightly. "Yes, I blindly allowed you to touch the young miss when I knew — I *knew* — that nothing good was going to come from you. How could I have made such a mistake? How could I have been so stupid?"Her hands clenched into fists at her sides, her entire body trembling with fury and self-recrimination.Nathan looked at her calmly, despite being hel

Vivienne was still lurching forward, her body rigid, her fists clenched so tightly her knuckles had gone white. Her face was twisted in an expression of pain — not the same unbearable, all-consuming agony she had been experiencing before, but something sharp and intense nonetheless.Like her body was fighting.Like whatever Nathan had done had triggered some kind of internal war, and her system was violently purging everything that did not belong. She looked like she was in pain.Terrible pain.Maybe even worse pain than before.Claire's mind went blank for a moment. Then it filled with fury."What the hell have you done to her?!" Claire's voice exploded across the space, sharp and accusing. "What the hell have you done to her?!"She took a step toward Nathan, her entire body trembling with rage."She has never vomited before!" Claire continued, her voice rising with each word. "Never! Not once! Ever since those doctors started treating her, she has never vomited before! What the hell

At that moment, upon hearing what the secretary had just asked Are you done? Nathan felt a flicker of uncertainty pass through him.Yes, it was done.He could feel that much with absolute certainty. The spiritual energy he had transferred into Vivienne's body had completed its work. The unnatural cold that had been consuming her from the inside out had been neutralized. Her internal systems had been stabilized. The root cause of her condition had been addressed. It was done. But there was supposed to be a reaction by now.Nathan frowned slightly, his exhaustion momentarily forgotten as he studied Vivienne's peaceful, sleeping face.According to the knowledge that had somehow become part of him — knowledge he did not remember learning but that felt as natural as breathing — there was supposed to be a final stage in the healing process.A purge. The body was supposed to expel the toxins, the corrupted energy, the physical manifestations of whatever had been causing the problem in the f
