The sound was sharp and sickeningly loud in the quiet room.

Bennett’s head snapped to the side. His cheek burned with a sudden, stinging heat.

He stumbled back, clutching his face, his eyes wide with shock.

"Father?" he whispered, his voice trembling. "You... you hit me?"

"You are worthless," Joshua hissed, his voice rising from a whisper to a roar. "Useless! I gave you everything. Education, status, a legacy! And what do you do? You play petty games with it all!"

"I don't understand," Bennet

  • CHAPTER 167. THE WEIGHT OF WATER.

Zachary spread his arms wide, the motion pulling at the dried blood on his knuckles, and swept his gaze across the courtyard. The broken angel. The cracked stone. And the water still dripping from the fountain's edge. He let all of it sink into his voice."You call this without force?" His words bounced off the mansion walls and came back at him, sharp and accusing. "You literally kidnapped me off the highway. Boxed me in with two trucks. Towed my car like a broken piece of luggage. And now you want to what? Talk?"Marcus's expression did not change. He remained standing on the fountain's surface, his eerie eyes fixed on Zachary with an intensity that seemed to press against the air between them. The water beneath his feet rippled in slow, concentric circles, but he did not sink, did not waver, did not give any indication that he was anything other than completely, utterly in control.Zachary scoffed and settled into his fighting stance. It was the very same one Marcus had mocked a

  • CHAPTER 166. DEEP RIVER.

Marcus grunted and turned his gaze back to Zachary. The flush was still there, high on his cheekbones, but something else was building behind his eyes, something that was not embarrassment. He grinned, and it was a strange grin.It was wide and way too wide, and somehow it was broadening further, stretching across his face like a crack spreading across ice. Then he exhaled. The breath that left his body was not warm. It was white and sharp and crystalline, a stream of fumes that poured from his mouth and curled in the air before dissipating into nothing. The temperature around the fountain dropped by degrees, and Zachary saw his own breath begin to fog in front of his face.Marcus stood up.The water in the fountain stirred. It did not ripple and did not splash. It simply moved, rising upward in defiance of gravity, climbing Marcus's legs with a slow, deliberate grace. The liquid clung to his skin like gel and Zachary watched as the water climbed higher and higher until it covered

  • CHAPTER 165. WATER ANGEL.

SMACK.Their forearms collided, and the impact vibrated through Zachary's bones, up through his shoulder and down through his spine. Marcus was strong, stronger than his lean frame suggested, and his stance was rooted in a way that made him seem immovable. At the same time, he raised his left arm, using his forearm to block the trajectory of Zachary's other hand, the hand still holding the remaining kunai to prevent the heir from using it on him.It was smart as well as maddening to Zachary. He clearly wasn't underestimating his proficiency with a blade. With a grunt, Marcus's leg came up, his knee driving toward Zachary's thigh with enough force to bruise bone. Zachary dodged, trying to get closer to him so could do more damage. But Marcus saw his intentions and went in for a sharp kick. His kick was meant to create distance, to force Zachary to back off, to give Marcus room to breathe. But that kick was also an invitation to getting stabbed in the leg, and Marcus knew it, so he ab

  • CHAPTER 164. DARK ICE

Marcus tilted his head, his light eyes clearly seeing the resolution on his face."You just had to go and ruin everything your highnessy," Marcus said, and there was something almost conversational in his tone. "You just had to fight back and ruin all our fun." Zachary did not answer. Rather he focused on breathing in the third form rhythm, steady and deep, and the energy in his channels was a river that would not be dammed.Marcus huffed at his silence and turned his head slowly, the movement almost lazy, and pointed at the driver. "You. Go take her inside. Now."The driver blinked, a little stunned, his gaze dropping to the unconscious woman sprawled on the stone floor and to the dark stain spreading beneath her.A shudder ran through his frame, visible even from a distance, but he did not argue. He crossed the courtyard in a shuffling jog, his path curving wide around Zachary and when he reached her, he crouched down with a soft grunt and hooked his arms under her shoulders. Th

  • CHAPTER 163. BLEED OUT

The woman's eyes flew wide, startled and wild, like a deer caught in the glare of oncoming headlights. She gasped sharply.“huhhk!” It was a wet, strangled sound that bubbled up from somewhere deep in her throat, and her hands flew to her stomach, fingers scrabbling at the dagger's hilt with a desperation that seemed almost comical given how quickly she had been reaching for the same weapon moments ago. Zachary did not let go. He held the blade steady, watching her face, watching the color drain from her cheeks in slow, inexorable waves, watching the realization settle into her gaze like sediment sinking through murky water.Thump. Thump. Thump! His heart was loud in his ears.'One of these almost killed me,' he thought, the memory surfacing unbidden, sharp and unwelcome, though he pushed it aside before it could take root. “Now she fucking knows how it feels.'Snarling, he drove his forehead into hers a second time, the impact solid and wet, bone against bone, and the vibration o

  • CHAPTER 162. TAKE IT DOWN

Swallowing thickly, he looked away from the woman, his gaze shifting to Marcus. The sincerity in Marcus's eyes was still there, still convincing, but Zachary didn't believe it anymore. He couldn't. Not with those weapons in plain sight. Not with armed guards and the way they kidnaped him to bring him here.Zachary laughed. It was a short, sharp sound, bitter and cold.Marcus's expression flickered as he saw the shift in Zachary's face, the hardening of his jaw, the narrowing of his eyes. He knew immediately that something had changed and reacting quickly, he reached for the other man, his hand extending toward Zachary's arm."Zachary, wait.."But it was too late.Zachary's Dragon Vision had already seen the shift in Marcus's energy before Marcus could even move his arms. The subtle flare in his core, the tension building in his shoulders, the way his weight shifted onto his front foot. Marcus was going to grab him. The man was going to try to restrain him.Zachary tilted his body
