Chapter 45: Lines Drawn

I say nothing as I watch Brianna, still blindfolded, her breaths shallow and uneven. Her hands tremble in her lap, fingers clenched in knots. She doesn’t know I’m here yet. Doesn’t know the worst part is over. That I came for her.

My chest tightens. The sight of her like this is so vulnerable, so afraid it boils something dangerous inside me. I don’t speak. I can’t. Not yet.

I turn slowly, eyes locking on Lydia.

She flinches under the weight of my silence.

“Outside,” I mutter, my voice low and tight.

She hesitates, but follows. She knows I’m holding something in, and when I do that, it’s never good.

The door shuts behind us, sealing us into the cold, open space behind the warehouse. The second it closes, I snap.

My palm connects with Lydia’s face in a flash of white-hot fury. She stumbles back, eyes wide, hand flying to her cheek.

“You think I wouldn’t find out?” I spit. “You thought I’d just take your word, believe your lies, and never question what happened to her?”

“She knew who yo

Kelvin’s POVI return to the office late, exhaustion draped over me like a heavy cloak. Emails and missed calls await unmistakable reminders of the battle we’re in: saving Eclipse Group. Lydia slides into her seat across from me without a word, offering an outstretched coffee. “I need you. We’ll fix this together.”She exhales, relief soft and fragile. Then we dive back into the fray: deck adjustments, asset reviews, meeting schedules. We’re relentless, fueled by necessity.Over the next few days, we hold pitch after pitch. Each morning I suit up for hope; each evening, my face reflects defeat. Potential investors offer polite interest, then strategic excuses. A couple cite unstable cash flow; others lean on personal risk quotas.I hold myself steady. No bitterness. No blame. Lydia matches my calm, though exhaustion lines her cheeks deeper each day.Midweek, we attend a high-stakes pitch at a boutique Asian investment firm. The meeting opens with well-heeled financiers from Seoul and

  • Chapter 99: The Weight of Regret

I step into the coroners’ office before sunrise, the stale air coating every surface like a silent accusation. I’ve come alone no security, no press, no company entourage. Just me and the truth I need.I carry a small envelope with documents proof of police obstruction, contract clauses written during Mary’s house arrest, the whisper of foul play. I hand it to the medical examiner. He glances at me, expression guarded.“Mr. Kelvin,” he says, “autor… we need permission. You’ll need Justin’s sign-off.”My heartbeat hammers against my ribs. “I am her ex-husband. I need this. It can’t wait.”He clears his throat. “Without consent, I ”“No.” My voice cracks. “I will file an injunction.”He stares at me as if the weight of the possibilities has just crashed over them. “I’ll make the request.”I leave the building feeling colder than when I entered.Later that day, I receive a message from my lawyer: Justin refused consent. Autopsy delayed indefinitely. My chest constricts. That bastard is b

My phone buzzes on the nightstand before I wake a message I don’t want to read. But I do. It’s from Eddy:Kelvin. Mary’s… gone. “Accidental fall.”I sit up so fast I hit my head. The world tilts. My heart slams against my ribs. “No. No. It can’t be.”I stumble out of bed, breath ragged. I call Mary. No answer. I call Eddy. He’s not picked up. My mind blanks.I’m downstairs in my study. Lydia is already here. She looks pale like she’s already grieving.“Kelvin,” she says gently. “I’m so sorry. They said Mary fell down the stairs.”My vision blurs. My legs give. I grab the desk to steady myself.“How?” I whisper, voice cracked.“She… slipped. It was an accident.”An accident. I choke.No.He’s dead. Justin’s house. I didn’t help. I listened to Lydia. Instead of saving her, I doubted. I let everything fall.Guilt ignites in my chest.“Lydia.” I barely breathe. “I could have saved her.”She reaches for me.I violently pull away.“No,” I shout. “Don’t touch me.”Her eyes widen. Mary’s POVThe gate looms ahead, its wrought-iron bars a mocking promise of freedom. My bare feet slap against the cold pavement, my breath ragged in my throat. Behind me, shouts erupt and the guards have noticed I’m gone. Run. Faster. The street is empty, the night air biting my skin. I don’t stop, don’t look back. The glow of a payphone booth ahead is my only hope. I crash into it, fumbling for coins, my fingers trembling as I dial the number burned into my memory. Kelvin. The line rings. Once. Twice. Pick up. Please“Hello?” His voice is sharp, alert. “It’s me,” I gasp, pressing myself into the corner of the booth. “Justin’s men, they're coming. I can’t I can’t go back” A hand slams against the glass behind me. I whirl one of Justin’s thugs, his face twisted in a sneer. The phone slips from my fingers as he yanks the booth door open. Kelvin’s distant voice calls my name once more before the line goes dead. Kelvin's POV I’m in my study, trying to focus on t

The email ping on my laptop interrupts a hushed early morning in the office. I glance up to see Lydia standing by the doorway, tablet in hand. There’s a tension in the room one I haven’t felt in months. It’s familiar, but unwelcome.“John Chen is calling,” she says softly.John Chen. A Chinese-American billionaire with resources that could redefine Eclipse Group. He’s offered to be sole investor on a ₦500 billion infrastructure project that could catapult our growth. Immediate completion timeline, preferential interest rates, and global branding opportunities it all looks too good to be true.“I refuse,” I say firmly, already anticipating her response.“Kelvin, we can’t pass this up,” she counters sharply. “He’s a generational investor. The perks… you know we need this.”I shake my head. “When will you learn? No deal worth signing is that perfect. You don’t see the risk control, reputation, strings attached. We’ll lose autonomy.”She folds her arms. “Or we’ll miss a once-in-a-lifetime

The corridors feel colder without Lydia in her familiar seat. I arrive at the office, early, before anyone else, and I can’t shake the emptiness her absence left behind. Everything’s running projects, restructuring, Justin’s takeover but it still feels hollow. Then she appears Lydia. She moves down the corridor with determination: smartly dressed, purposeful. My steps falter. She reaches me just outside my door.“Kelvin,” she says, voice steady but thin. “I need to talk. Can you see me?”I nod and gesture inside. My desk is neat. Chairs in line. Personal but controlled. I listen as she closes the door behind us. There’s tension in the low hum of the empty office.“I’m sorry,” she begins, eyes direct. “I let anger drive me. I let jealousy blind me. I created that scandal I crossed a line. But I want back. I want to be part of the team. I can be better. I will be better.”Her voice cracks slightly and I catch the sincerity. My heart tightens. I admire her always have but it would be wea
