Jaden POV

The cold gray light of dawn filtered through the blinds of Jaden’s former bedroom—a cramped, windowless box at the back of the family home that smelled faintly of old paper and rain.

Selena stood in the middle of the small space, a black plastic trash bag hanging loosely from her fingers. She had spent two hours lying awake in her own master suite, her mind churning over Jaden’s final words on the phone.

You slapped me for a lie. Now live with the truth.

She shook her head, forcing a sharp breath through her nostrils. It was just mind games. Jaden was a nobody who had gotten lucky guessing that Victor’s corporate credit was overextended. He was probably sleeping on a park bench right now, shivering in his wet clothes.

She shoved open his closet door, expecting to find cheap polo shirts and worn-out sneakers. Instead, the shelves were almost bare. Jaden had taken nothing with him when he walked out.

As she reached for a faded jacket on the top shelf, her knuckle caught against a loose piece of wood near the rear wall. A small compartment shifted.

Selena paused, her brow furrowing. She reached into the gap and pulled out a small, heavy box made of dark cherrywood. There was no brand name on the polished lid, only a stylized emblem deeply carved into the wood: an eagle holding two crossed swords above an inverted crown.

Her fingers trembled slightly as she flipped the brass latch open.

Inside, resting on a bed of dark velvet, sat a ring.

Selena’s breath caught in her throat. The ring wasn't a cheap commercial band. It was a solid platinum band, thick and heavy, set with a raw, uncut blue diamond that seemed to capture the morning light and fracture it into intense, razor-sharp beams. Around the central stone, smaller flawless white diamonds were embedded in the metal.

She pulled the ring from the velvet box, her skin cold against the heavy metal. On the inner band, a tiny inscription was cut into the platinum:

For Selena. My world, my anchor. September 14, 2023.

It was the exact date they had signed their marriage certificate—the day Jaden had moved into her family’s house with nothing but a single canvas bag.

"What are you staring at?"

Selena jumped, her thumb instinctively closing over the ring as Victor stepped into the doorway. His eyes were bloodshot, his hair unwashed, and his shirt wrinkled from a night spent screaming into his phone at lower-tier bank managers who refused to lift the Aureus lock on his accounts.

"Nothing," Selena said quickly, but Victor was already moving forward, his heavy boots thudding against the floorboards.

He snatched the wooden box and the ring from her hand, holding the stone up to the dim light. A bitter, ugly laugh bubbled out of his chest.

"You think this is real?" Victor sneered, his voice hoarse from yelling all night. He tossed the ring back into the box and slammed the lid shut. "It’s cheap cubic zirconia set in silver-plated brass. The loser probably bought it off a street cart for fifty bucks to make himself feel like a man."

"Victor, look at the weight of the metal—"

"I said it’s fake!" Victor roared, his face flushing red as he slammed the box onto the small desk. "Do you think a guy who couldn't even afford a fifty-dollar suit has a ten-carat blue diamond sitting in his closet?! He’s a fraud, Selena! A penniless, leeching fraud!"

Before Selena could answer, a thunderous boom shook the entire house.

THUMP. THUMP. THUMP.

The sound of heavy fists hammering against the front double doors echoed down the hallway, so violent that the crystal chandelier in the foyer rattled against the ceiling.

"What on earth is that noise?!" Evelyn’s voice shrieked from downstairs. "Selena! Victor! Someone is breaking in!"

Victor wiped a line of greasy sweat from his forehead, his jaw clenching. "It’s probably my legal team. I told them to meet me here at six."

He brushed past Selena, taking the stairs two at a time. Selena followed slowly, holding the cherrywood box tight against her chest, her stomach twisting into a hard, cold knot.

Victor yanked the grand front door open. "It’s about time you—"

The words died in his throat.

Standing on the porch were four men in crisp, dark blue uniforms bearing the official gold seal of the City Enforcement Bureau. Behind them, parked along the pristine curb of the driveway, sat three massive black moving vans and two unmarked federal sedans.

The lead marshal, a broad-shouldered man with a graying mustache and a steel clipboard, didn't even look at Victor's face. He pulled a thick stack of legal documents from his jacket.

"Victor Vale? And Evelyn Vance?" the marshal asked, his voice ringing out across the quiet neighborhood.

"I am Victor Vale," Victor said, trying to force his usual commanding posture. "What is the meaning of this? This is a private residence."

"As of six o'clock this morning, this property no longer belongs to the Vance estate," the marshal said flatly. He slapped a bright red repossession notice directly onto the carved oak door frame. "Under order of the High Financial Court, all physical structures, land titles, vehicles, and personal property linked to Vale International and its subsidiaries have been seized by Aureus Capital to satisfy a default judgment of six hundred and twenty million dollars."

Evelyn, standing in her silk bathrobe at the foot of the stairs, let out a strangled gasp and fainted onto the marble floor.

"You can't do this!" Victor screamed, stepping toward the officer. "My lawyers are filing an injunction right now! This house belongs to Selena's father!"

"Selena's father signed this property over as secondary collateral for your expansion loan three weeks ago, Mr. Vale," the marshal replied coldly. He waved his hand toward the driveway. "Move your personal items out immediately. My crew has orders to clear the structure in thirty minutes."

A dozen uniformed movers pushed past Victor, carrying heavy wooden crates and roll-out racks.

Selena stood frozen on the stairs, watching in absolute horror as the men began stripping her home—removing paintings from the walls, packing silver sets from the dining room, and taking the keys to Victor's cars off the entry table.

Victor grabbed the lead marshal by his lapels, his eyes wide with wild, unhinged rage. "Who ordered this?! Tell me the name of the judge who signed this paper!"

The marshal shoved Victor’s hands off his chest with effortless strength, stepping back into the doorway.

"The judge didn't sign it, Mr. Vale," the marshal said, pulling a sealed black envelope from his coat pocket and holding it out toward Selena. "The Chairman of Aureus Capital signed it personally. And he left a message for the lady."

Selena’s knees buckled. She held onto the stair banister with one hand, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird as she took the black envelope.

"What message?" she whispered, her voice barely audible over the sound of her mother weeping on the floor.

The marshal looked her dead in the eyes.

"He said to tell you that the fake ring in your hands is worth more than Victor Vale's entire life."

Across the gallery, her father sat with his head in his hands, his knuckles raw and red, while her mother’s muffled sobs echoed off the tall marble walls. Judge Harold Vance didn't even look over his half-moon spectacles as he flipped through the thick, red-stamped federal indictment. "Case number 24-8891. The State versus Selena Vance," the judge read, his voice flat and mechanical. "Systemic bank fraud, execution of fraudulent corporate guarantees, and intentional default on federal credit reserves totaling one hundred and forty million dollars." Selena’s public defender—a tired-looking man with greasy hair and a wrinkled suit—didn't even raise his pen. "Your Honor, my client maintains she was misled by secondary

When the Senior Legal Director of Aureus Capital walked through that door, Victor would hand over every piece of Vance family collateral, drop Selena and her father directly into the crosshairs of the federal investigation, and walk out of the building with full state immunity. The heavy door handle turned. The hydraulic lock hissed open. Victor straightened his posture, forcing a warm, corporate smile onto his face. "Ah, director, thank you for making the time—" The smile froze on his lips. Jaden walked into the room. Jaden didn't dive for cover. He leaned into the shotgun's heavy recoil before the lead contractor could pull his trigger. BOOM.
