Chapter 4: The Iron Horizon

The Black Watch Huntsmen did not march; they deployed like a plague.

By 0400 hours the main roads of Oakhaven Metro were choked with matte- armored personnel carriers. Soldiers in tech ballistic gear, their faces concealed behind reinforced obsidian visors, established heavily armed checkpoints every three blocks. The Aegis Directorate had officially declared a city- martial curfew citing a "high-level terrorist threat to critical infrastructure."

In reality Silas Sterling was simply using the state's power to protect his wealth.

Inside the established underground command center in the industrial sector the air hummed with the steady drone of cooling fans from banks of high-powered servers. Marcus was a blur of motion, his fingers flying across three split-screen monitors.

"They've locked down the harbor, the financial district and the transit hubs " Marcus reported, not looking up as Logan stepped into the room carrying two cups of coffee. "Silas isn't taking any chances. He knows The Leviathans cargo vanished and he knows he can't explain to the council how a billion dollars worth of advanced weaponry disappeared under his watch."

Logan set a cup beside Marcus's keyboard. "He's desperate. A desperate man makes mistakes but he also makes huge tactical blunders. What's the status of the seized shipment?"

"Already distributed, " Marcus said, a grin breaking through his exhaustion. "The Aegis Oblivion logistics team moved the crates through the underground utility tunnels before the Black Watch even finished setting up their perimeter. We didn't just take his weapons, Logan. We took the V-4 Disruptor Rifles, the ones designed to bypass heavy corporate armored plating. Silas was planning to sell those to groups to fund his seat on the Supreme Council."

Logan stood behind Marcus, his arms crossed, his eyes analyzing the map of the city's gridlocked streets. "Silas thinks the Black Watch will flush us out. He's forgotten that we trained some of that division's commanders. They use our playbook."

"Not all of them " Marcus warned, clicking a button that brought up a personnel file labeled in high-threat red. A holographic profile materialized, showing a scar-faced woman with ice-blue eyes and silver-streaked hair. "The Supreme Council put General Diana Vance—your aunt—in charge of the deployment."

Logan's face remained calm. His chest tightened slightly. Diana. The woman who had taught him how to hold a rifle before he was old enough to drive. The only family member who hadn't publicly condemned him when Silas framed him for treason.

"She won't hesitate to shoot if she finds us, " Marcus murmured softly. "She's a soldier of the state, Logan. She follows orders."

"Then we make sure she doesn't find us, " Logan said, his voice flat and unwavering. "We focus on the target. If Silas is using the military to protect his assets we cut off his support. Who is his primary civilian backer in the Directorate?"

"Director Donald Vance—a billionaire who controls the city's media and communication networks " Marcus explained, pulling up a map of a heavily fortified estate in the Upper District. "Hes hosting a closed-door emergency fundraiser tonight to bail out the Sterling Groups failing stock. Silas will be there via encrypted video link. Security will be biometric scanners, thermal drones and a full platoon of Black Watch elite."

Logan pulled the hood of his jacket over his head. "Prepare the signal jammer and the fake identities. I'm going to attend a fundraiser."

The Vance Manor in the Upper District resembled a fortress wrapped in glass and chrome. High-society oligarchs, terrified by the financial instability of the city, arrived in armored limousines, escorted by Black Watch soldiers wielding heavy assault rifles.

Logan walked calmly up the stone steps wearing a perfectly tailored charcoal-gray tuxedo provided by the Aegis Oblivion luxury acquisition team. Around his neck hung a VIP press pass under the alias of a financial journalist.

As he reached the entrance a Black Watch guard stepped forward raising a hand. "Hold.. Biometric scan."

Logan handed over the press pass, his face relaxed, his posture submissive the perfect act of a civilian eager to please. The guard slotted the card into a scanner and pointed a biometric laser at Logan's retinas.

In the bunker miles away Marcus watched the bypass sequence trigger. "Data spoofing is active... Forging iris patterns in three... Two... One... You're clear Commander."

The scanner beeped softly. The guard handed back the pass, his face impassive behind his visor. "Enjoy the evening sir."

"Thank you for your service " Logan said with a nod, stepping through the double gold doors into a grand ballroom that smelled of expensive champagne and collective panic.

Hundreds of Oakhaven's elite were huddled in groups whispering fiercely about the martial law and the mysterious "Vanguard" warning. In the center of the ballroom a massive holographic projection screen was being set up preparing to broadcast Commander Silas Sterling's address from his bunker.

Logan moved through the crowd like a ghost taking a flute of champagne from a passing waiter's tray. His eyes scanned the room identifying the security spots, the guards rotation patterns and the main server room located just behind the grand stage.

Suddenly the lights dimmed. The chatter in the ballroom died down instantly.

Director Donald Vance stepped onto the stage with a microphone pinned to his lapel. "Ladies and gentlemen please. I know the current situation in Oakhaven Metro is alarming.. The Directorate has the city completely under control. To reassure you we have Commander Silas Sterling himself broadcasting live from the Oakhaven Military Command."

The massive holographic screen flickered to life.

Silas Sterling appeared in his military dress uniform, his chest covered in medals half of which Logan had personally won on the battlefield. Silas looked tired bags under his eyes. His voice carried the booming authority of a man who believed he held all the cards.

"Citizens of Oakhaven " Silas spoke, his gaze sweeping over the crowd through the camera. "The terrorist element calling themselves the Vanguard is nothing but a desperate remnant of traitors. As I speak the Black Watch is closing the net. Within twenty-four hours the instigators will be. The Sterling Group will restore absolute financial stability to"

"You're running out of time Silas."

The voice didn't come from the stage. It didn't come from the system.

It came from the back of the ballroom.

The entire crowd gasped, turning around in unison. Logan stood there his champagne flute placed casually on a table his hands slipped into his tuxedo pockets. He wasn't shouting. His voice cut through the large room with terrifying clarity.

"Who is that? Security removed him!" Director Donald Vance shouted from the stage pointing a finger.

Four Black Watch guards instantly converged on Logan, their heavy boots slamming against the floor rifles raised.

Logan didn't move. He reached into his pocket, pulled out a small black remote and pressed the center button.

BZZZZZT.

A massive electromagnetic pulse rippled through the ballroom. The holographic screen violently glitched, splitting into static. The electric lights overhead shattered, plunging the room into darkness save for the emergency red backup strips along the floor.

"Whats happening?!" women screamed. Panic erupted as the elites began to stampede toward the exits only to find the electronic doors slammed shut by the automated security lockdown Logan had hijacked.

In the red light the four Black Watch guards charged Logan.

The first guard swung the butt of his rifle toward Logan's jaw. Logan ducked beneath the blow, his hand slamming into the guard's throat, shattering his windpipe before grabbing the falling rifle. Using the weapon as a staff, Logan spun, slamming the steel barrel into the second guard's helmet, cracking the visor and sending him crashing to the floor.

The remaining two guards opened fire, the bright muzzle flashes illuminating Logan's face for milliseconds at a time.

Logan executed a combat roll utilizing a heavy marble pillar as cover. As the guards paused to reload Logan surged forward like a shadow. He caught the guard by his tactical vest slamming him brutally into the wall before delivering a precise devastating palm strike to the fourth guard's chest, stopping his heart instantly.

Four elite soldiers, neutralized in under six seconds.

The remaining elites in the ballroom were frozen in terror huddled against the walls. Logan ignored them, walking calmly onto the stage where Director Donald Vance was trembling, his back pressed against the wall.

Logan stood before the glitching holographic screen. Silas Sterling's face was still barely visible through the static, his eyes wide with horror as he watched the silhouette of the man he thought he killed five years ago.

Logan reached up slowly, tearing off his press pass revealing the Aegis Oblivion ring, on his finger. He looked directly into the camera lens.

"Forty-eight hours are up, Silas, " Logan said softly. "The countdown has hit zero. Look out your window."

Before Silas could respond on the screen a deafening explosion shook the city loud to be heard even inside the fortified ballroom.

Through the big glass windows of the manor everyone in the Upper District saw the three main supply towers of the Sterling Energy Grid. The power source for the city's folks. Explode into huge bright blue flames. This plunged half of Metro into complete dark darkness.

Logan turned his back on the crowd that was shouting and walked into the shadows by the stage exit. He left the city's people to understand that the God of War had not only come back. He had already taken control.
