Chapter 1: The Stranger Who Spent My Life
At 00:03:11, Elias Venn learned that a stranger could spend his life.
He was kneeling in a wrecked commuter carriage when the number appeared across his vision, red enough to stain the darkness. For one absurd second, he thought it was another warning from his cracked visor. Then the digits fell to 00:03:10, and he felt the tiny medical implant beneath his collarbone turn hot.
SYSTEM NOTICE: UNAUTHORIZED TIME DEBIT.
PREVIOUS BALANCE: 23:58:42. CURRENT BALANCE: 00:03:09. APPEAL WINDOW: CLOSED.Someone had taken almost an entire day from him.
“Stay with me,” he told the woman pinned beneath the carriage door. Her coat was soaked with diesel and blood. Above them, the tunnel lights flickered as distant alarms announced another system-enforced curfew. The woman’s own timer hovered beside her face: 00:11:06.
“Leave,” she whispered. “You can still make the stairs.”
A rational man would have done it. Elias was twenty-eight, had a sister waiting for him in North Ward, and possessed no hunter license, no weapon, and no credits with which to buy another minute. But his fingers were already beneath the bent metal. He had pulled people out of buildings for six years. Stopping now felt less like a decision than forgetting how to breathe.
He wedged a rescue jack under the door. The handle stuck on the third pump. Elias forced it again, felt the old injury in his left wrist flare, and watched another fourteen seconds vanish. When the opening widened, he dragged the woman free by the shoulders.
His counter read 00:02:31.
The woman grabbed his sleeve. “He said you would come.”
“Who?”
“A man in a gray coat. He checked your name. Said the transfer would be clean.”
Elias froze. Transfers required consent or a judicial warrant. He had signed nothing. He had received no court notice. His sister Mara had spent three months training to maintain the medical implants; she had drilled that rule into him after the first people died when their accounts expired.
“Where did he go?”
“Platform six.” The woman’s eyes searched his face. “I tried to stop him.”
The overhead speaker crackled. “All unlicensed responders must withdraw. Hunter pursuit active. Target: Jarek Hollen. Alive or deceased.”
A translucent card opened in front of Elias without his touch.
EMERGENCY CONTRACT: APPREHEND JAREK HOLLEN.
REWARD—ALIVE: +04:00:00, 120 XP. REWARD—DECEASED: +08:00:00, 120 XP. TIME LIMIT: 00:02:14. FAILURE PENALTY: -00:01:00. LICENSE: PROVISIONAL ON ACCEPTANCE.The disparity hit him harder than the theft. A dead man was worth twice a living one. Whoever ran the System had priced an execution above an arrest.
He could search for the thief without accepting. If he failed, he would simply die when his clock hit zero. If he accepted and failed, the penalty would kill him sooner. The contract card pulsed, patient and obscene.
A voice spoke from his earpiece. “Elias? The hospital’s locked its doors.” Mara sounded out of breath. “They say my time record has been frozen. What is going on?”
His hand shook. He had intended to tell her about the missing hours once he got clear of the tunnel. Now she sounded as though she were running.
“Stay somewhere public,” he said. “Find the duty medic. Don’t authorize anything. Not even if the message says it’s from me.”
A crash came through the line, followed by a stranger ordering her to put down her phone.
“Mara?”
No answer.
The counter reached 00:01:58.
He accepted the contract.
NEW TITLE: PROVISIONAL HUNTER.
LEVEL: 0. EQUIPMENT PERMISSION: EMERGENCY TOOLS.Elias snatched the rescue jack from beneath the door. He could still feel the stranger’s hand gripping his sleeve, could still hear Mara’s interrupted call. In the tunnel ahead, a tall figure in a gray coat turned toward the stairs. The man paused, looked directly at Elias, and smiled as if they had already agreed on the rules.
Then Hollen raised a remote control.
On the platform display, every door flashed LOCKED. The train behind Elias began to move. The rescued woman was still lying across the tracks. He had one minute and forty-two seconds to catch the man who had stolen his life—or save the person he had just pulled free.

The System Hunter Chapter 35: The Twelve Locked Inside
Eight minutes remained because Elias had proved the rehearsal was fraudulent. He stared at the revised clock. The System had not punished an unlawful act; it had followed a concealed condition buried in the administrative packet. His mission completion notice still glowed green. Above it, twelve extraction permits remained valid and unusable."Send everything to the public printers," Rafi said."The relay is filtering outbound evidence," Tessa replied. "The packet is sealed as a restricted audit. I can file it in the district ledger, but Merrow's office controls the export window."Mara studied the authorization log. "The reconciliation routine has two outputs. Time debits go through the receiving stations. A completion certificate goes to the permit board. If the certificate can't validate, the gates must remain closed. That's what they're using to trap everyone.""Could we stop the certificate?""We need to stop the debit instead. Otherwise the gates stay shut while people lose time

The System Hunter Chapter 34: A Signature Without a Hand
The ventilation fans stopped, but the countdown continued.Elias read his alleged consent from the printed receipt. It said he had delegated his hunter signature at 23:40, the exact time a service label placed Dax Merrow inside Mara's receiving room. At that hour, Elias had been fighting an execution warrant stamped with his name. He had never entered this gallery."A duplicated key," Mara said. "Not a duplicated person."Tessa's voice came through in bursts. "The relay's shielding is interfering with your transmitter. Read me the authorization method."He repeated it."Then don't unplug anything," she said. "A legitimate delegated signature contains a consent challenge: a short code shown to the owner when permission is granted. If the packet has no challenge record, the copy proves the credential was replayed."Mara pulled the packet to the cabinet's small screen. Every field was visible except CONSENT CHALLENGE, which displayed a gray rectangle marked unavailable. She requested the

The System Hunter Chapter 33: The Minute Nobody Owned
The Trial District gates began closing with twelve extraction permits still inside.Elias watched the steel leaves converge on the upper corridor monitor. A woman in a gray contestant vest sprinted toward the narrowing gap, but the warning lights turned red before she reached it. She stopped short, hands on her knees, while the System announced a safety closure. Beyond the gate, an ambulance waited with its rear doors open. Nobody inside the district could reach it.REGIONAL REHEARSAL: 00:28:41.Mara held her hand beside Elias's on the contract screen, neither of them touching ACCEPT. The objective promised access to the root authorization log. Its penalty would place Elias in the first reconciliation batch, where even his few remaining hours might be removed at once."Don't accept until we know where the log is," she said.Dr. Orin glanced toward the clinical chairs. "The receiving stations listen to a municipal relay. It's in the east service gallery. If we disconnect it, those chai

The System Hunter Chapter 32: The Rehearsal Clock
Elias surrendered his extraction permit before the board could take it away.He pressed ACCEPT beneath the witness-access condition. The gate printed a receipt showing that his permit had been returned to the district pool, and a second card authorized him to visit Mara under supervised review. He looked at the names of the remaining qualifiers. June and Anika still held their places. His choice had not displaced either of them."You're staying," Rafi said."Someone has to stand beside the witness," Elias replied. "You can take the evidence outside."Rafi shook his head. "I haven't been qualified yet. But I can finish another mission. I'm not leaving her here without proof."Tessa studied the notice attached to Elias's receipt. "The permit pool should refill with the next eligible applicant. Instead it's marked held by administrative review. They're trying to prevent another person from benefiting.""Then record it," Elias said. "Everything they do now leaves a trail."An officer esco
