Tons of reinforced concrete and shattered structural steel rained down like an artificial meteor shower inside the subterranean armory, burying the vault floor in a dense cloud of choking dust and jagged debris.

Ethan didn't flinch. The moment the ceiling cracked, his reflexes kicked into overdrive. With one powerful yank, he hauled Vera Sterling forward, using her momentum to throw her clear of the primary collapse zone just as a massive slab of concrete crashed directly into the exact spot where they had been standing a split second earlier.

The air filled with the caustic smell of pulverized drywall, ionized electrical sparks, and the freezing sub-zero wind howling down through the newly opened ventilation shaft.

Roar!

A deafening, inhuman screech shook the subterranean walls. The colossal Alpha-level Sub-Zero Stalker that had breached the facility lunged down through the cratered ceiling, its massive, frost-caked claws tearing into the steel shelving units as if they were made of tinfoil. Its hollow, glowing red eyes locked instantly onto the two human figures trapped in the blinding dust.

Vera coughed violently, scrambling backward across the concrete floor, her hand instinctively reaching for a sidearm that wasn't there. Her cool, unshakable commander demeanor had completely fractured, replaced by raw survival panic as the towering monster whipped its jagged tail, shattering a rack of military crates into splinters.

"What is that thing?!" Vera shrieked, her voice cracking as she stared up at the nightmare creature towering over nine feet tall, its skin covered in thick plates of blue ice and dripping with black toxic fluid.

"An extinction-level welcome party," Ethan said coldly.

He didn't hesitate. Even though his spatial storage dimension was packed to its absolute ten-thousand-cubic-meter limit with generators, food, and the armory's cryptographic mainframe, his physical combat capabilities were still honed by a lifetime of brutal post-apocalyptic survival. He stepped in front of Vera, his eyes locked on the Alpha Stalker's pulsing chest core—the only vulnerable weak point on its armored carapace.

The beast lunged forward with blinding speed, its massive claws swiping horizontally to decapitate them both.

Ethan dropped to one knee, letting the razor-sharp wind of the beast's attack pass inches above his hair, and drove a heavy-duty tactical combat blade—salvaged from an armory crate—upward with every ounce of his strength, driving it deep into the monster's soft underbelly.

Squelch!

Black, boiling acid blood sprayed across the floor, hissing as it instantly froze against the sub-zero air. The Alpha shrieked in agonizing fury, its massive jaws snapping downward straight toward Ethan's shoulder.

Before the jaws could clamp shut, Ethan twisted the blade and rolled backward, narrowly escaping the lethal bite, but the creature's backdraft slammed him hard against the concrete wall, knocking the wind from his lungs.

Vera, recovering her tactical instincts faster than expected, lunged toward a fallen military case, ripped open a heavy explosive breaching charge, and slammed its magnetic activator against the steel support pillar right beside the beast.

"Get down!" Vera screamed, pressing the remote detonator.

Ethan kicked off the wall, diving flat onto the floor as Vera thumbed the trigger.

A thunderous explosion tore through the vault. The concrete support pillar buckled instantly, bringing the rest of the armory's weakened ceiling crashing down directly on top of the Alpha Stalker, burying it beneath a mountain of crushing rubble.

Silence descended on the vault, broken only by the crackle of exposed electrical wires and the howling blizzard pouring down from the surface.

Ethan slowly pushed himself up from the dust, wiping blood from his forehead as he stared at the massive pile of rubble. The Alpha was buried, but the structural integrity of the entire mountain bunker was failing fast.

He turned his cold gaze toward Vera, who was leaning against a shattered crate, breathing heavily and staring at him with a mixture of terror and intense calculated respect.

"You're not just a civilian contractor, Ethan Vance," Vera whispered, blood staining her tactical cheek. "Who the hell are you really?"

Before Ethan could answer, his tactical wrist-comm—tied directly to the city's emergency satellite grid—flashed with a violent red alert.

CRITICAL WARNING: Perimeter breach detected at your primary estate. Unidentified hostile forces have bypassed the front gates.

Ethan's blood ran ice cold. The parasitic in-laws—Brenda, Marcus, and Chloe—hadn't just left quietly after their eviction. They had brought heavy backup, and they were tearing apart his personal safehouse right now, hunting for the contingency supplies he had left behind as bait.

He turned on his heel and sprinted toward the primary exit tunnel, but as he reached the threshold, the ground beneath his boots dropped out entirely as a massive secondary sinkhole swallowed the exit path in a roaring avalanche of snow, ice, and sheared steel beams.

Trapped deep beneath the mountain with a failing bunker and a ticking clock, Ethan watched the emergency monitors flash another terrifying update: the perimeter security at his estate had just been fully compromised, and the vault doors were being blown open.

The parasitic in-laws had finally tracked the decoy security grid of his secondary estate, walking right into the exact kill-zone trap he had laid out for them before the freeze. But with the mountain bunker failing and tons of snow sealing the exit, every second wasted meant risking his primary stasis inventory.Beside him, Vera pushed herself up from the concrete rubble, wiping soot and blood from her cheek. She stepped forward from the shadows, lifting her tactical visor just enough to reveal a striking, razor-sharp face framed by midnight-black hair, her cold gray eyes locked directly onto his chest. "Or I turn your heart into red mist before you can blink."Ethan didn't drop the weapon. His expression remained a mask of frozen granite, though his mind raced at maximum velocity. In the previous timeline, this woman—Vera Sterling, the ruthless field commander of the Syndicate—had operated entirely in the shadows during the first year of the apocalypse, slowly building a monopoly on military munitions before seizing control of the entire eastern sector. She shouldn't have been anywhere near this regional armory on day one. Her presence h
